The Question From Jimmy Kimmel That Left Kanye West Speechless
If you had a nickel for every time Kanye West made headlines for leaving an audience speechless, you might have enough to score some Yeezy Slides. Let's be honest, Ye has a way with words — as in, he has a way of offending people or seriously confusing them. Remember when he went on "The Ellen DeGeneres Show" and rambled for nearly 6 and a half minutes straight? While it was strange to see the rapper prattle on about ending bullying to a woman who was later accused of perpetrating it, the incident was far from West's most controversial moment. The Yeezy mogul also ruffled some feathers when he professed his love for then-candidate Donald Trump and said the pair "are both dragon energy," per The Guardian, though Ye has since explained why he no longer supports Trump.
West is undeniably a man of many words — yet, he said relatively few in a recent appearance on "Jimmy Kimmel Live!" And you won't believe what Kimmel asked that finally left Ye speechless.
Jimmy Kimmel stumped Kanye West with a Donald Trump question
In 2018, Kanye West sat down for a wide-ranging interview on "Jimmy Kimmel Live!" The rapper attempted to explain his support for President Trump after he kicked up a fuss when he praised the politician as his "brother." Ye explained, "When I see people just even like go at the president, it's like, why not try love ... One by one by one, we can diffuse this nuclear bomb of hate of society by think."
But Kimmel, a near-nightly critic of the politician, didn't let Ye off the hook for his comments. The host noted that then-President Trump didn't exactly share his "try love" approach. "There are literally families being torn apart as a result of what this president is doing, and I think that we cannot forget that, whether we like his personality or not, his actions are really what matter," Kimmel explained. "You've so famously and so powerfully said George [W.] Bush doesn't care about Black people. It makes me wonder what makes you think that Donald Trump does — or any people at all?"
The camera shifted to Ye, but the rapper — seemingly baffled by Kimmel's hard-hitting question — never presented an answer. The awkwardness of the moment was only alleviated after Kimmel interjected, "Why don't we take a break ... We'll come back."
Usually, Ye is the one leaving people speechless
According to Express, a similar — albeit reversed — situation occurred when former President Donald Trump invited Kanye West to lunch in the oval office to discuss prison reform. What should have been a standard photo-op quickly went off the rails and turned into another opportunity for Ye to deliver an impassioned monologue that nobody had asked for.
"There was something about putting this hat on that made me feel like Superman," the rapper said of his red MAGA cap during a 10-minute monologue, per BBC. West added that we should stop "worrying about the future" because "all we have is today," according to Newsweek. Ye then inexplicably proclaimed: "Trump is on his hero's journey right now. He might not have thought he'd have a crazy mother-f***** like me [supporting him]."
Former President Trump couldn't seem to get a word in edgewise, or perhaps he was just as speechless as the rest of us. But when Ye finally paused for long enough, the president said what we were all thinking, per NPR: "That was quite something." We wholeheartedly agree.
