Celebrities With The Worst Driving Records
This article contains references to drug use, addiction, mental illness, and drunk driving incidents.
It's pretty standard that most people learn how to drive. But, when a celebrity admits they never had the chance to obtain a driver's license is it all that surprising? Celebs who make millions usually have personal drivers to take them everywhere, from red carpet events to the grocery store. On an episode of "The Late Late Show," Cardi B told James Cordon that while she owns a number of luxury cars, from a Lamborghini to a Bentley, she doesn't drive them. When asked why she even has the vehicles, the rapper shared, "To take pictures with." Oh, the lifestyles of the rich and famous!
On the plus side of not having a driver's license, Cardi B has a clean record. Unfortunately, the same can't be said for the stars below who have their license but have so many driving offenses, they should consider cutting it up and not driving at all. With these celebs making so much money, it's incredible that they won't hire a driver. From multiple DUIs, speeding, and driving with a suspended license, some stars thought they speed away from specific charges only to pose for a mug shot instead.
Fasten your seat belt, because the following celebs should all reconsider being behind the wheel and use their ridiculous earnings to hire a private driver.
Did DMX ever have a driver's license?
Rapper DMX, whose real name is Earl Simmons, skyrocketed to fame with his debut album, "It's Dark and Hell is Hot," in 1998. Per Billboard, in 2003, the rapper became the first artist to score five consecutive number one albums, giving us memorable hits like "Party Up (Up In Here)" and "Where the Hood At?" However, his success was overshadowed by his several arrests and run-ins with the police, with charges that ranged from assault, animal cruelty, drug possession, and even rape (this charge was later dropped), per BET. According to GQ, DMX had been to prison around 30 times for various charges.
His driving record was also a cause for concern with Complex detailing a grand total of 15 driving arrests that stemmed from 2000 to 2013. Those violations included the rapper getting busted for driving without a license way too many times to count. In other instances he was busted for traffic violations, driving with a suspended license, reckless driving, and was even caught trying to pose as an FBI agent to police after getting caught driving under the influence. These incidents took place in several states across the U.S.
In April 2021, DMX sadly died at age 50 after suffering a heart attack following a drug overdose, per the New York Post. A month after his death, the posthumous album "Exodus" was released by his record label Def Jam Records.

Billy Joel should stick to being a piano man
Billy Joel's driving record isn't as smooth as his piano playing skills. In April 2004, the "Piano Man" musician was involved in a car crash in Long Island, New York which made it his third crash in two years. According to the Associated Press (via Entertainment Weekly), the artist said, "I can't believe I got in another accident," after his car crashed into the home of an elderly woman. A police spokesperson told the New York Daily News (via Entertainment Weekly), "There were slick road conditions and a curve in the road." Thankfully, no one was hurt.
According to MTV, in June 2003, the singer lost control of his Mercedes Benz in Sag Habour, Long Island, and smashed into a tree. Although he was airlifted to a nearby hospital, he did not suffer from any major injuries. A year earlier, Joel once again escaped serious injury when he crashed his vehicle in East Hampton. After that accident, Rolling Stone reported that the singer checked himself into rehab in Connecticut for a "personal problem."
However, in 2013, he told The New York Times Magazine, that although he did have a drinking problem, it wasn't a contributor to his many car crashes. "But people made a connection, like, 'Oh, he went there (rehab) because he was in a car accident from drinking. No ... I never had a DUI in my life. That's a fallacy. Look at the police records,'" he shared.

Amanda Bynes' record isn't squeaky clean
Amanda Bynes' last film credit was for 2010's "Easy A" which is hard to believe since the actor had such a promising career in Hollywood. After the Nickelodeon star revealed she was retiring from acting at 24, her life seemed to spiral out of control, and the media hounded the young star. That became especially true after she was arrested for a DUI and charged with two hit-and-runs in 2012.
In April of that year, TMZ reported that Bynes was arrested for DUI when her BMW side-swiped a police vehicle. The star was also charged with two hit-and-run incidents in April and August of that year but was able to settle with the victims, per the Los Angeles Times. Unfortunately, 2013 wasn't a good year for Bynes after sending out several disturbing tweets and exhibiting erratic behavior. That included starting a small fire, which resulted in the actor having to be hospitalized in a 5150 psychiatric hold, per TMZ. She was released from rehab five months later.
CNN reported that in February 2014, Bynes' DUI charge was dismissed and she was given three years of probation. That same year, she got her driver's license back after it had been suspended following her hit-and-run charges. However, in September, she was charged with her second DUI, per ABC News (it was later dismissed). Since then, Bynes has continued to seek help for her mental health and in March 2022, the nine-year conservatorship over her life and finances was officially ended.

Flavor Flav spent time in jail for his driving offenses
Rap fans know Flavor Flav, whose real name is William Jonathan Drayton Jr. as the co-founder of Public Enemy. But reality star viewers may know him best for his stints on multiple VH1 reality series, including "The Surreal Life" and the dating competition show "Flavor of Love." However, besides looking for love, the rapper has had some trouble with the law including several driving offenses.
According to TMZ, Flav was pulled over and later arrested in Las Vegas in 2011 when police officers learned that he had four warrants that included driving without proof of insurance, a parking ticket, and two charges of driving without a license. The rapper was later released, per CBS News. Three years later in Long Island, New York, the "Bring the Noise" rapper was stopped and arrested by officers again for driving 79 mph in a 55 mph zone while in possession of marijuana. When looking up the rapper's name, police found that he had a whopping 16 suspensions. He was released to attend his mother's funeral, per Rolling Stone.
We'd think the rapper would have really learned his lesson the first time around — back in 2022, Today reported that Flav spent nine weeks in prison in New York for a suspended license and multiple unpaid parking tickets.
Kylie Jenner's first years of driving weren't so smooth
Kylie Jenner has been blasted by fans for taking selfies while driving and using her phone while behind the wheel. However, that's not the worst of it with the reality star having a driving record that isn't very clean. As of 2022, the star was estimated to have a net worth of $750 million – more than enough to consider hiring a personal driver with which to facilitate unlimited safe selfies on the road.
According to TMZ, the makeup mogul received her first driving offense just 18 days after she got her driver's license in August 2013. Jenner crashed her Mercedes SUV into the back of a Toyota which caused a chain reaction, prompting that car to hit the back of the one in front. A photo showed major damage to the Toyota with its back bumper stuck in Jenner's grille.
Five months later, TMZ reported that Jenner was caught speeding in her Mercedes while out in Los Angeles. It was a rough year for Jenner after she was pulled over yet again in July in the same vehicle. She received tickets for tinted windows and driving with a teenage passenger without an adult in the vehicle. But that wasn't the end of it. The next month her sparkling new Range Rover took major damage when another car rear-ended hers on the way home from dinner.
It's safe to say that maybe Jenner should stick to a personal chauffeur.
Justin Bieber learned from his mistakes
Justin Bieber's image went from an adorable pop star to a bad boy when he was arrested in January 2014 in Miami, Florida, per The Guardian. Bieber was 19 years old when he was taken into custody by police for DUI, drag racing in a rented Lamborghini, driving without a valid license, and resisting arrest. According to E! News, the singer's alcohol intake was under the legal limit, however, he was under the influence of marijuana and had taken Xanax. Fans got to see a smiling Bieber in an orange jumpsuit when posing for his mugshot.
The star pleaded guilty to his DUI charge and he was ordered to take an anger management course, partake in a drunk driver's education program, and pay $50,000 in charitable donations. A year before his serious arrest, Bieber was showing signs of his new bad boy image when he threatened a paparazzi in London. And weeks before his Miami arrest, he'd caused $80,000 worth of damage to a neighbor's home in Calabasas, California after throwing eggs at a neighbor's house.
In January 2021, Bieber looked back at his arrest by posting a photo on Instagram that showed him being escorted in handcuffs by officers. For the caption, he wrote, "Not proud of where I was at in my life. I was hurting, unhappy, confused, angry, mislead, misunderstood and angry at god ... I also wore too much leather for someone in Miami." Agreed.
Michelle Rodriguez chose to go to jail for her charges
Michelle Rodriguez may have gotten a little too comfortable portraying her fierce drag racing character Letty Ortiz in the "Fast & Furious" movie franchise. In 2003, she was pulled over by police officers during separate incidents for offenses including driving with a suspended license, hit-and-run, and DUI — for which she pleaded no contest, per E! News. The actor subsequently spent 48 hours in jail and was given three years probation.
In 2005, while she was working on the television show "Lost" in Hawaii, Today reported that Rodriguez was pulled over for speeding on three separate occasions, paying fines for each transgression. When she plead guilty to DUI in April 2006, CBS News reported that Rodriguez chose to pay a $500 fine and go to jail for five days instead of performing community service. However, she served just two days, per People.
Because Rodriguez violated her probation after her Hawaii incident, the actor was sentenced to 60 days in prison, but only served four hours and 20 minutes in a California prison. In September 2007, the actor violated her probation and was given a 180-day jail sentence. Rodriguez struck lucky once again and was released 18 days later.

Bobby Brown has several DUIs
Bobby Brown isn't the most reliable driver after having multiple DUIs on his record. The former husband of the late Whitney Houston was charged with his first DUI in 1996 when he lost control of his Porsche in Florida and ended up injured, per MTV News. Police stated that his blood-alcohol level was way above the legal limit and that Brown also had drugs in his system. In 1998, the singer was found guilty and ordered to spend five days in jail with probation. However, two years later he spent 26 days in jail when he was found to have violated his probation after cocaine was found in his system, according to NME.
In 2003, Brown faced more jail time after pleading guilty to driving under the influence in Georgia back in 1996. He was sentenced to eight days in jail and ordered not to drive for a year, per Billboard. But his troubles didn't end there. In 2012, the "My Prerogative" star was pulled over and charged with a DUI and with driving using a suspended license. He was arrested and later released from jail. Rolling Stone reported that Brown checked himself into rehab after the incident. However, he was arrested again later that year and charged with yet another DUI, for which he was sentenced to 55 days in jail. Luckily for him, he served just nine hours and was put on an electronic monitoring device.

Paris Hilton didn't get the celebrity treatment
Paris Hilton has grown up from her many infamous scandals throughout the 2000s. From her sex tape to her feuds with Lindsay Lohan and Nicole Richie, Hilton left it behind to become a successful businesswoman and philanthropist. These days, she's sought after all over the world for her DJing skills, with Yahoo! reporting that she earns $1 million for every appearance. While her scandals are seemingly in the past, Hilton can't exactly run away from her driving record which has made constant headlines.
In September 2006, Hilton was arrested in Los Angeles for driving under the influence after taking a breathalyzer test. She plead no contest to the charges and was sentenced to probation with additional fines in 2007. Just a month later, she was pulled over for driving with a suspended license, for which she was given a 45-day jail sentence for violating her probation. After a three-day prison stint, she was released and sentenced under house arrest, per Fox News.
Unfortunately for Hilton, she faced major criticism for skipping out on jail time and getting an early release. This resulted in a judge ordering her back to court where she was told she would have to complete her time in jail. Hilton was released on June 26th, 2007 after spending another three weeks there. TMZ reported that since the start of 2006, she had accrued six more driving violations including multiple hit-and-runs against parked cars.
Lindsay Lohan spent years on probation
Lindsay Lohan has had several run-ins with the law since her first major incident in May 2007, when she was arrested on suspicion of driving under the influence in Beverly Hills, California. Two months later, she was charged with her second DUI and for driving with a suspended license in Santa Monica. According to CNN, the actor was sentenced to one day in jail, 10 days of community service, and court-ordered rehab. However, Lohan had a tough time keeping up with her probation terms which included completing her community service and attending alcohol education programs. She did a few brief stints in jail and was sentenced to rehab several times, per E! News. In 2012, a judge ended her probation for her 2007 DUI.
In 2012, Lohan would add another driving offense to her record when she allegedly knocked a person with her car in Hollywood. She was later arrested that same year for clipping a man with her car in New York and leaving the scene. According to CNN, Lohan would finally be off of probation for good in 2015 after completing her community service from her 2012 car incidents. It would make it the first time in almost eight years that the "Mean Girls" star was probation free.

Dennis Rodman escaped jail time after three DUIs
Dennis Rodman, a five-time NBA champion made headlines for his outrageous antics on and off the court, but his most serious incidents involved run-ins with the law. In 1999, Rodman was charged with his first DUI in California when he was pulled over and had a blood-alcohol level of .15 percent — well above the .08 percent legal limit. According to ABC News, Rodman pleaded guilty and was required to attend a three-month alcohol program. Addressing the incident, Rodman shared his thoughts through his lawyer Paul Meyer. "I know some people were upset about the arrest," he said. "But I think the police were just doing their job."
In 2016, Rodman was charged with a hit-and-run in Southern California with additional charges that included driving across a dividing section, driving without a valid driver's license, and giving police false information. The former NBA star pleaded guilty and was given three years of informal probation. Rodman would end up with another DUI in January 2018 after he was pulled over by police on the West Coast Highway in Newport Beach and failed a sobriety test. According to the Los Angeles Times, his blood-alcohol level was reportedly triple the legal limit. Rodman pleaded guilty and received three years of probation.

Britney Spears' complicated road history
In February 2006, Britney Spears made headlines for putting her infant son in danger when she was photographed behind the wheel while he sat in her lap instead of in a proper car seat. The "Toxic" superstar defended her actions, blaming the incident on having experienced a "horrifying, frightful encounter with the paparazzi." Although she didn't face any charges, Spears' life would be under heavy scrutiny in the years that followed.
The next few years would be a tumultuous time for Spears after going through a divorce from Kevin Federline in 2007, with whom she shares two sons. That same year, she infamously shaved her head while dozens of paparazzi snapped photos of the star. In August, she was charged with a hit-and-run after she hit a parked car and drove away. A year later, the "Gimmie More" songstress rear-ended an SUV, although there was little damage done. Sadly, she also lost joint custody of her two sons when she was placed on a 5150 involuntary psychiatric hold. Spears would then be placed under permanent conservatorship by her father, James Spears, with a judge terminating her conservatorship in November 2021 after a long 13-year battle to end it, per Billboard.
However, with her newfound freedom, Spears found herself getting another driving offense when she was pulled over in March 2022 for speeding, per Today.
