Selena Gomez Admits She Ignored Her Lupus Diagnosis
The "Same Old Love" singer is speaking candidly about her struggles with lupus.
Selena Gomez and her friend Francia Raisa, who donated her kidney to the singer in the summer, opened up to the Today show about Gomez's life-saving transplant and the subsequent "brutal recovery" on Monday, Oct. 30. But in part two of their joint interview, which aired Tuesday, Oct. 31, Gomez admitted that she initially refused to accept her lupus diagnosis and continued to work even as her symptoms of the autoimmune disease worsened.
"I'd get fevers, headaches. I'd get fatigued, but I always kept going," the "Wolves" singer began (via Entertainment Tonight). "I ignored it to be honest, because it wasn't something maybe I really wanted to accept. I don't think I made the right decisions because I didn't accept it. And that's extremely selfish and at the same time, really, really unnecessary. You know, I'm not really proud of that."
"I'm definitely the hardest person on myself," the 25-year-old continued, adding that she eventually sought treatment in September 2016, when she began a 90-day stint in rehab. "I went into a facility. I took some time off. I had to get my mind right, be healthy. I removed myself from everyone in my life."
"Everything affects your body too," Gomez went on, explaining the link between her physical and mental health symptoms. "That's a huge part of why I was feeling that way. I had a lot of fatigue; I wouldn't want to leave the bed a lot."
But the "Bad Liar" singer, who recently called it quits with The Weeknd, believes that her health condition has made her a stronger person. "What I believe is that it does happen for a reason," she said. "I think that all the stuff that I went through made me and defined everything that I am right now."
As Nicki Swift previously reported, Gomez announced in September 2017 that she underwent a kidney transplant over the summer as a result of her lupus, sharing, "It was what I needed to do for my overall health."
While we wait to hear more about her recovery, read up on the truth behind Selena Gomez's hidden health crisis.
