Selena Gomez, Francia Raisa Open Up About Kidney Transplant
Selena Gomez and Francia Raisa are opening up about the singer's recent kidney transplant.
The two sat down with the Today show for an exclusive joint interview, airing Monday, Oct. 30, 2017, to speak out for the first time since Raisa donated her kidney to Gomez earlier in the year. "My kidneys were just done. That was it and I didn't want to ask a single person in my life," Gomez explained in the network's preview clip, which was posted on Instagram on Friday, Oct. 27. "And she volunteered and did it."
As the "Bad Liar" singer continued, she said that her best friend literally saved her life. "Because she did. That's it," Gomez said. "I guess I got to the point where it was really kind of life or death."
As Nicki Swift previously reported, Gomez, 25, announced in September 2017 that she underwent a kidney transplant over the summer as a result of her lupus. "I'm very aware some of my fans had noticed I was laying low for part of the summer and questioning why I wasn't promoting my new music, which I was extremely proud of," the "Same Old Love" singer captioned a photo of herself and Raisa holding hands while lying in adjacent hospital beds. "So I found out I needed to get a kidney transplant due to my Lupus and was recovering. It was what I needed to do for my overall health."
"There aren't words to describe how I can possibly thank my beautiful friend Francia Raisa," she continued in the heartfelt note. "She gave me the ultimate gift and sacrifice by donating her kidney to me. I am incredibly blessed. I love you so much sis." Having spent the summer recovering, Gomez, who recently helped raise $500K for the Lupus Research Alliance, added, "Lupus continues to be very misunderstood but progress is being made."
While we wait for Gomez and Raisa's interview to air on Oct. 30, read up on the truth behind Selena's hidden health crisis.
