Scandal Star Tony Goldwyn Reveals He Was Sexually Harassed
The actor just opened up about his own personal experience with sexual misconduct in Hollywood.
At the 2017 GLSEN Respect Awards on Friday, Oct. 20, 2017, Scandal's Tony Goldwyn told Access Hollywood that he'd once been the victim of sexual harassment. "It happened to me when I was literally Lupita's age in my last year of acting school," he recalled, referencing actress Lupita Nyong'o's recent article about the sexual harassment she faced at the hands of movie producer Harvey Weinstein.
"It happened to me by a man, and it wasn't as extended and awful as what Lupita went through, but it was the same thing," Goldwyn, 57, continued. "It was the casting couch and I didn't understand what was going on, what w as happening — I thought it was my fault. I thought I was misunderstanding the situation ... It took me a couple of years to get over it."
He added, "For a woman, it's something that, you know, women have to deal with in every situation, in every industry with power... with powerful men."
Nyong'o previously opened up to The New York Times about her experience with disgraced Miramax co-founder Weinstein back in 2011. She claimed he pressured her to drink alcohol and later expressed his desire to give her a massage after they'd watched a movie together in his home. She instead offered to give him a massage, as she "felt unsafe" and wanted to see "exactly where his hands were at all times" (via Variety).
Another time, Nyong'o recalled Weinstein allegedly asking her to go up to his hotel room. "He told me not to be so naïve. If I wanted to be an actress, then I had to be willing to do this sort of thing," Nyong'o recounted. "He said he had dated Famous Actress X and Y and look where that had gotten them."
Nyong'o refused, and Weinstein reportedly implied he'd ruin her career.
Nyong'o is just one of many Hollywood actresses and entertainment industry workers who've come forward about Weinstein's alleged history of sexual harassment and assault. Other celebrities like Rose McGowan, Cara Delevingne, and Gwyneth Paltrow have also gone public with their disturbing experiences with the producer.
