The Truth About Rebel Wilson's Relationship With Ramona Agruma
Rebel Wilson has confessed that she was unlucky in love until she met her current partner. Calling herself a "late-bloomer" in an interview with People in 2022, Wilson explained, "It's not an exaggeration to say no one was really interested in dating me, especially in my 20s...But in a way that allowed me to not only have this amazing career and come up out of Australia, out of nowhere and get two degrees and then come to America and crush it." While clearly thankful for the success she found as a single lady, at 42, Wilson is now ready for a serious relationship and lasting love.
On June 9, 2022, Wilson announced her new relationship with Ramona Agruma on Instagram. On the social media platform, the "Pitch Perfect" star posted a selfie with her girlfriend, writing, "I thought I was searching for a Disney Prince... but maybe what I really needed all this time was a Disney Princess." Here's what we know about the couple so far.
Rebel Wilson felt pressured to come out
In a disappointing twist in the otherwise happy announcement, it turns out that Rebel Wilson's decision to go public with Ramona Agruma was not entirely her choice. Reportedly, The Sydney Morning Herald basically gave Rebel Wilson a deadline to comment on the story before they were going to publish it, pushing Wilson to announce the new relationship — and come out — before she was ready.
In a now-deleted op-ed piece (via Us Weekly), The Sydney Morning Herald admitted to having contacted Wilson, publishing the statement: "It was with an abundance of caution and respect that this media outlet emailed Rebel Wilson's representatives on Thursday morning, giving her two days to comment on her new relationship with LA leisure wear designer Ramona Agruma, before publishing a single word... Big mistake. Wilson opted to gazump the story, posting about her new 'Disney Princess' on Instagram." Fans and journalists both criticized the publication for basically forcing Wilson to come out and jumped to her defense. In response to a tweet condemning the Sydney Morning Herald, the actor responded, "Thanks for your comments, it was a very hard situation but trying to handle it with grace."
The columnist, Andrew Hornery, has since apologized in a statement, admitting, "I have learnt some new and difficult lessons from this."
Ramona Agruma works in the fashion industry
Not only has there been a lot of talk about how Rebel Wilson's new relationship became public, media outlets have also been buzzing about who her new love interest is. It seems that Ramona Agruma is a bit out of the spotlight. In an interview with an Australian radio station (via 7 News), actor Hugh Sheridan, who introduced Wilson to Agruma, stated, "Ramona's very smart, she speaks lots of languages, she's a really great European woman."
Agruma looks to be a fashion industry entrepreneur living in Los Angeles. According to her Instagram page, she founded a clothing brand called Lemon Ve Limon. The company sells sustainable luxury loungewear with embroidered details, per the website. Her Twitter bio also mentions that she is also the founder and creative director of jewelry brand Delys Joaillerie. While the brand no longer appears to be actively creating new products, pieces have previously been worn by a range of celebrities, including Hailee Steinfeld and Salma Hayek. By the looks of Agruma's Instagram she also serves as a brand ambassador for the jewelry company Bee Goddess. Another celeb-favorite luxury diamond brand, Bee Goddess has been worn by Kate Winslet, Madonna, Cate Blanchett, and of course, Rebel Wilson.
Hugh Sheridan set them up
Rebel Wilson and Ramona Agruma met through a mutual friend, Australian actor Hugh Sheridan. On the same day Wilson announced her new relationship, Sheridan (who uses they/them pronouns) spoke with an Australian radio show "The Morning Crew" (via 7 News), detailing how they brought the two together. "I'd been setting Rebel up with various people and Ramona up with various people," they explained. "I'm a bit of a matchmaker in my spare time, but Rebel was a really hard one and so was Ramona."
While they had previously only been setting Wilson up with men, Sheridan began to wonder if another woman would be a better fit. "For a woman that is that successful, it takes a strong man to stay with them and not get jealous and all that sort of stuff...But I thought a woman with a woman that's successful, they'll just sort of lift each other up," they said during "The Morning Crew" broadcast. Sheridan also made an Instagram post celebrating the match, writing, "My two best friends...call me c-hupid."
Wilson shared on the podcast "U Up?" that she had been on over 50 dates in a year, trying various ways to meet people including celebrity dating app Raya. However, turning to a friend to set her up was ultimately the most reliable way to find a partner. "I can trust that they are who they say they are, which is something on the apps that you don't really know," she said.
The couple got to know each other over the phone
Rebel Wilson and Ramona Agruma didn't immediately jump into dating, or even meeting each other in person. They first got to know each other through conversation. "We spoke on the phone for weeks before meeting. And that was a really good way to get to know each other...It was a bit old-school in that sense — very romantic," Wilson explained to People.
Hugh Sheridan confirmed that he introduced them over the phone. Wilson had seemingly never seriously dated a woman and was perhaps hesitant about potential chemistry beforehand. Chatting on the phone was the necessary icebreaker. "I told Rebel later on, 'It's a girl,' and she was like, 'Okay alright'...And they spoke for a week or so, and they spoke a lot, and then Rebel actually came back from Australia to meet her...She'd just left, and then she flew back a week later to meet her, and they've been together ever since," Sheridan told 2Day FM's "The Morning Crew" (via 7 News).
They've been making public appearances for a while
Though Rebel Wilson and Ramona Agruma didn't officially announce their relationship until June 2022, they had been appearing out and about as a couple for a while, attending several public events together, such as the 2022 Vanity Fair Oscar Party. Before the pair headed to the famous celebrity-filled event, Wilson posted a video of her with her date, both looking like the epitome of Hollywood glam. A couple of weeks later, they made an appearance together at a charity event for nonprofit Operation Smile, per ABC 4.
They had also been popping up in each other's Instagram posts for a while. The "Senior Year" star posted a photo of them attending a football game in January, roasting marshmallows in April, riding horses together in May, and even included a photo of them together in her Pride post on June 1, 2022. So while Wilson may not have been explicit about her new queer relationship, she wasn't exactly hiding it either.
How serious is their relationship?
Rebel Wilson and Ramona Agruma reportedly have been together since January 2022, and it sounds like the two are already totally all in. A source told People, "It's a very serious relationship and they're super happy together. It's been very cool for Rebel's friends to see her this secure with someone." Opening up about her love life in a May 2022 interview with People, Wilson said, "I think going through the process of finding more self-worth, I think that what you want in a partner is elevated and so it's great to have someone who feels like an equal partner and be in a healthy relationship." This interview was released before Wilson confirmed publicly that she's dating Agruma.
Wilson has reportedly introduced her mother to Agruma and discussed children. As a source told The Sydney Morning Herald (via Yahoo! News), "Wilson's mother Sue Bownds, who lives in Sydney, recently flew to LA to meet Agruma, while the couple have openly discussed having a family and getting married." It is worth noting that the SMH article has since been taken down, so make of that source quote what you will. Regardless, Wilson seems happy in love and we're here for it.
