Inside Nina Dobrev's Relationship History
As far as her dating philosophy goes, "The Vampire Diaries" actor Nina Dobrev once said in Cosmopolitan, "I'm a relationship girl." Not one for random hookups, she shared, "I'm progressive in some ways, old-fashioned in others. I like it when guys hold the door open and are sweet and thoughtful. ... A man in a suit looking put together and dapper is very attractive, but I also kind of like the I-just-rolled–out-of-bed, a-little-bit-of-scruff, effortless, not-trying-hard-but-still-sexy guy."
Over the years, Dobrev has dated a few men in Hollywood that seemed to fit her criteria, including a co-star from her hit series "The Vampire Diaries." But not every relationship was made to last with some of her past love interests, which include a professional dancer, a couple of movie stars, and a screenwriter.
As of this writing, the Canadian actor is officially taken with fans seeing Dobrev looking happier than ever with her newest beau on social media. Before we dive into her latest romance, let's take a look back at Dobrev's relationship history to see who has caught the brunette beauty's eye.
She fell for Ian Somerhalder when they were coworkers
Nina Dobrev and Ian Somerhalder first met on the set of "The Vampire Diaries," and fans were thrilled to hear that they had struck up a romance behind the scenes. In 2011, they announced that they were officially an item with Dobrev breaking her rule of falling in love with someone she works with.
Dobrev told Seventeen, "You know what? It was honestly what I believed at the time. I didn't want to be dating one of my co-stars — my goal on the show was to be professional. But sometimes you can't help who you have a connection with, and you can only fight it for so long — which I did for a really, really long time." The couple called it quits after three years together with reports stating that it might have been due to their 10-year age gap. However, People reported that they remained on good terms and even continued to work on set with one another until Dobrev left the series in 2015.
After his split from Dobrev, Somerhalder began seeing "Twilight" actor Nikki Reed. Six months after they got together, they announced they were engaged. The pair tied the knot in 2015 and are still together as of this writing. Dobrev told E! News that she was delighted to see her ex with Reed, stating, "They look happy and I am happy and so I don't see why there should be a problem with that. The drama is in the media, it's not with us."
Nina Dobrev linked up with Derek Hough
After Nina Dobrev's split with Ian Somerhalder, it was reported by E! News that the actor was dating professional dancer Derek Hough. Their relationship began around September 2013, just a few months after she and her "The Vampire Diaries" co-star called it quits. Dobrev connected with the "Dancing With the Stars" pro thanks to her BFF and Derek's sister, Julianne Hough. A source told Us Weekly, "[Nina] was hanging a lot with Derek's sister Julianne. Then she fell for him."
When Derek won his first Emmy for Outstanding Choreography for "Dancing With the Stars," Dobrev, of course, celebrated her then-boyfriend's victory. She shared alongside a photo of Derek holding his award, "I can't express in 140 characters how unbelievably excited+incredibly proud I am of you. You deserve this."
Us Weekly reported that the couple split after a mere six weeks of dating, noting that their work schedules may have been a factor in their breakup. However, their split thankfully didn't hurt her relationship with Julianne.
Liam Hemsworth may have just been a fling
Although Nina Dobrev has said that she is more into relationships than casual hookups, that didn't seem to be the case when she was spotted with "The Hunger Games" actor Liam Hemsworth. According to People, the pair were seen at a bar in Atlanta, Georgia, in February 2014 and seemed to be way more than just friends.
A person who clocked the two at a bar called The Corner Tavern shared, "Nina was sitting on his lap and they were staring into each other's eyes while talking. She spent the whole time only talking to him." Hemsworth had just ended his engagement to Miley Cyrus in September of 2013, and that same month was seen making out with fellow actor Eiza González, per E! News. However, People reported that Hemsworth and Cyrus were back on in 2016 and they would tie the knot two years later. They ended things again after less than a year of marriage.
Dobrev and Hemsworth never confirmed or denied a relationship and it's unclear if the two were exactly an item and for how long. By the summer, the "Degrassi" actor had moved on to another A-list star.
Orlando Bloom and Nina Dobrev sparked dating rumors
In July 2014, Nina Dobrev and Orlando Bloom were spotted getting hot and heavy at a Comic-Con party. One eyewitness told Us Weekly that the actors were apparently obviously canoodling throughout the evening, and another stated, "They grinded on the dance floor." Both stars had recently entered singledom, with Dobrev breaking up with Derek Hough, and Bloom splitting from wife Miranda Kerr.
Although nothing really came about with the supposed new couple, People reported that they linked up again in April 2017 — which was right after Bloom and Katy Perry decided to take some time apart. "[Bloom and Dobrev have] known each other for a while. Recently they've been hanging out as more than friends. It's super casual," a source said. However, a rep denied the dating rumors, telling People, "Nina and Orlando are just friends. They have the same representation and friends in common, and often end up in the same social group. That's all it is." It really might've been a totally platonic reunion: Dobrev was dating actor Glen Powell from January 2017 until the end of that year, per Us Weekly.
Bloom would reunite with Perry in 2018, and a year later, on Valentine's Day, he proposed to the "Firework" pop star. The couple welcomed a daughter, Daisy, in August 2020.
She dated Austin Stowell for several months
Nina Dobrev found love again in June 2015 when it was reported that she was dating Austin Stowell, an actor best known for his roles in the "Dolphin Tale" flicks and "Whiplash." The next month, although they had yet to confirm their romance, photos showed the two kissing on a yacht in Monaco, per Pop Sugar.
In October 2015, they made their red carpet debut as a couple for the premiere of the film "Bridge of Spies," which stars Stowell. A source said to E! News of their connection, "You can tell how much they love each other just by the way they speak and their mannerisms toward one another."
That same month, they discovered that they weren't following one another on Twitter. In response to Stowell's tweet, Dobrev wrote, "That awkward moment when u realize ur not following him either&gotta do it realfast b4 he realizes." However, by January or February of 2016, the couple had called it quits. At the time, a source told E! News, "It started to get hard with both their schedules. They remain on good terms."
Nina Dobrev and Glen Powell ended on good terms
Nina Dobrev and Glen Powell's romantic relationship is said to have begun around the start of 2017 with the stars having been good friends before they became romantically involved. People confirmed that they were indeed a couple by July of that year when the duo were seen attending Julianna Hough's wedding to Canadian hockey player Brooks Laich and taking adorable, PDA-filled photos.
Sadly, these two didn't last either; E! News reported in November 2017 that they were over. A source shared, "Nina just wrapped up a project and is about to start another and her schedule has been a huge part of it. They haven't been spending much time together since the end of summer," adding that their split may have been caused by the whole not being able to see each other as much as they presumably would've liked.
Years later, Dobrev attended the London premiere of "Top Gun: Maverick," which stars Powell as Jake "Hangman" Seresin, per Us Weekly. Evidently, there's no bad blood between the former paramours.
Her relationship with Grant Mellon fizzled out
Nina Dobrev moved away from dating A-list movie stars and began dating screenwriter and direcotr Grant Mellon in early 2019. E! News reported that the two were trying to fly under the radar, but he was seen attending her 30th birthday bash in January, which was the first indication that they were more than just friends. The couple appeared to make things official when they sat in the front row at a Los Angeles Lakers game in March of that year; per E! News, Dobrev shared a photo of her ticket, which cost over $2,000.
In May of that year, Dobrev and Mellon looked lovey dovey when they took a trip to Cannes where the "The Vampire Diaries" actor was snapped seated on her then-beau's lap and sharing a laugh, per the Daily Mail. However, their relationship was also cut short and it was reported that the two split in November of 2019. Per E! News' source, it sounds like there wasn't too much drama when they ended things. The tipster said. "Nina hasn't mentioned a breakup. But she hasn't spoken about Grant in several weeks. She seems to be quite happy and has recently been out socializing with friends, each time without Grant." Perhaps the former pair just fizzled out?
A years-long romance with Shaun White
Nina Dobrev might have found her perfect match in Olympian Shaun White. According to People, their love story began sometime around 2019 and shortly after they took their relationship to the next level when they moved in together during quarantine in 2020. Fans got to see them become Instagram official in May 2020 when Dobrev cut off the snowboarder's famous orange locks.
Since then, Dobrev has shared countless photos of White, including giving him a sweet shoutout for his birthday, snowboarding together, and going on many vacations to places like Costa Rica and Greece. Unsurprisingly, Dobrev rooted for White when he joined Team USA at the Beijing Olympics in January 2022. White told Us Weekly, "She wants to elevate the people around her. It's such a beautiful thing, especially in today's world. ... To have that kind of caring quality still is really special." After placing fourth in his Olympic competition and announcing his retirement, Dobrev praised her beau on his accomplishments. She shared on Instagram, "I am in awe of you. ... You are a true hero and you inspire me daily .. You will forever be the G.O.A.T. of snowboarding. Not to mention you are also the G.(B).O.A.T. = Greatest Boyfriend Of All Time."
In May 2022, the two attended the amfAR Gala at Cannes together. For the annual event, Dobrev sporting a daring red dress and White looking sleek in a black tuxedo. These two really know how to make an entrance.
