Inside Johnny Depp's Relationship With Ellen Barkin
So, what exactly is Johnny Depp's relationship with Ellen Barkin? Well, as you may remember, these two starred alongside one another in the 1998 movie "Fear and Loathing in Las Vegas," which actually boasts a pretty impressive A-list cast. Also appearing in the flick? Benicio Del Toro, Tobey Maguire, Mark Harmon, Christina Ricci, and Cameron Diaz. Not bad!
The two have, of course, have a fair bit in common having enjoyed massively successful careers over the years, despite their differing roles in the movie (Depp was the star while Barkin had a more minor role playing a waitress). Barkin has since popped up in the likes of the blockbuster "Ocean's Thirteen" and the comedy series "The New Normal," while, as for Depp's career, he's got some of the biggest movies ever made under his belt from the likes of "The Pirates of the Caribbean" franchise to "Edward Scissorhands."
However, Depp's personal life has hit the headlines more than his stellar career in more recent times, with the world being gripped by his salacious defamation court battle against his former wife Amber Heard after both accused the other of domestic abuse. It's part of that tense battle in the courtroom where Depp and Barkin will be forced to acknowledge their past relationship once again. But what is their history really like?
Johnny Depp and Ellen Barkin's fling
Back in the 1990s, Johnny Depp and Ellen Barkin had a brief and seemingly pretty casual romantic relationship. Depp himself confessed to the romance during a previous court battle, that time when Depp took the British tabloid The Sun to court.
Speaking in the courtroom in July 2020, he shared, via Daily Mail, that they'd "been friends for a number of years" before a "sexual element began," explaining that they got together romantically in the wake of her split from her now former husband, Gabriel Byrne. Depp explained that they were intimate "for months on and off" while filming "Fear and Loathing in Las Vegas," but claimed Barkin was supposedly looking for more from their dalliance than he was. "She wanted more than a relationship, she wanted a proper relationship with me and I did not want that," he claimed. The actor then suggested they hadn't spoken since then, noting, "I didn't feel the same about her as she did me and I suppose from that moment on she became very, very angry."
Depp suggested those unrequited feelings may have been why Barkin had spoken negatively about him in a statement read out to the court. Page Six claimed Barkin accused her ex of once throwing a wine bottle in her direction after she claimed he became jealous and got upset with her. Depp denied that claim though, calling the allegation "untrue."
Ellen Barkin and Johnny Depp's next court run-in
It seems like the only place Ellen Barkin and Johnny Depp have any kind of interaction these days is through the court system. Barkin is expected to open up about her past relationship with Depp once again amid his latest court battle with Amber Heard, as Law & Crime reported Barkin will take to the stand via a video call. Reporter Angenette Levy tweeted on May 11 that Barkin is expected to testify after being called upon by Heard's legal team, as will Heard's sister, Whitney Henriquez, and Depp himself. The testimony is set to resume on May 16.
As anyone even remotely following the infamous trial will already know, there have been some seriously explosive moments already. Depp discussed in detail the alleged pooping incident in their bed following a nasty fall out between the two, while Heard spoke candidly about another alleged fight the two had after Depp testified he, at one point, believed his now former wife may have been having an affair with actor James Franco.
We'll have to wait and see what happens as the dramatic trial continues, including if Barkin reveals more about their romance, but there's no doubting this whole case has been tough to watch with some seriously disturbing allegations being banded around.
