What Matthew Lawrence Has Been Doing Since Boy Meets World
"Brotherly Love" actor Matthew Lawrence landed his breakout role as Chris Hillard on "Mrs. Doubtfire" in 1993. Things really changed for the star, however, when he was cast as Jack Hunter in "Boy Meets World" four years later. The show followed the life of character Cory Matthews as he navigated teenage growing pains and was one of the most popular teen series in the '90s. Though Lawrence was not a part of the original cast and did not appear until Season 5, he remained as a series regular until the show's end after seven seasons.
Lawrence continued his work in the entertainment industry into his adulthood. After decades of working on projects, he recently recalled what kept him on track for success: a piece of advice from his late "Mrs. Doubtfire" co-star Robin Williams. Lawrence told Page Six in a 2018 interview that Williams warned him to stay away from drugs and always checked up on him. "As a 12-year-old and later on as a teenager, you don't realize how special that is," Lawrence said. "But then, as you go on and continue to work, you realize that there aren't a lot of people who are that invested."
A lot of things have changed since Lawrence first appeared on "Boy Meets World" over two decades ago. So, what is Lawrence doing now?
The transition from childhood to adulthood
Matthew Lawrence was a busy child actor in the '90s and early 2000s. And while his appearances on camera seemed to slow down a bit leading up to the 2010s, they picked right back up again when he was cast as Tony Longo on "Melissa & Joey," which also featured his brothers, Joey and Andy Lawrence. The show helped put Matthew back on the acting scene with recurring cameos as Longo. After his role on "Melissa & Joey," he starred in the "Boy Meets World" spin-off "Girl Meets World," reprising his role as Jack Hunter until the series was unfortunately cancelled after three seasons.
While acting was Matthew's main focus, he also dabbled in the music industry. He started a band called Still Three with Joey and Andy in 2017, according to People. The group released their first single "Lose Myself" on streaming platforms, but have not publicly released any other music since.
"We started out as a musical family — acting kinda redirected us," Matthew told People. "It feels good to get back to our roots." It seems as though the brothers have now shifted their focus away from music again, though they continue to work in the entertainment industry. Matthew's personal life has also gone through big changes since his days of teen stardom.
Matthew Lawrence's tumultuous public relationship
Matthew Lawrence and Cheryl Burke first dated in 2007 before breaking things off in 2008, according to Us Weekly. The couple had two very different lifestyles and ended up going their separate ways. However, nearly a decade later, the "Dancing With The Stars" vet and Lawrence decided to give things another go in 2017 and eventually got engaged in 2018, per Page Six. According to Us Weekly, they tied the knot in May 2019 and appeared beyond happy to spend the rest of their lives together. In a 2020 interview with Good Morning America, Burke called the actor her "rock" and said, "I don't know where I would be without him."
While everything appeared perfect from the outside looking in, Burke broke the news in February 2022 that she and Lawrence's marriage was ending in separation via Instagram. Burke said, "I hope you can understand that I will not be commenting any further at this time and am asking for understanding and privacy."
Lawrence has yet to publicly comment on his divorce. However, according to a legal response obtained by People, Lawrence hit back at Burke's divorce filing by asking the court to terminate spousal support for either party and to uphold their prenuptial agreement. During a Good Morning America interview filmed at 90s Con in March, Lawrence was not wearing his wedding ring alongside his OG "Boy Meets World" co-stars, but appeared to be in good spirits.
