The Truth About Alec Baldwin's Children
After Alec Baldwin and Hilaria Baldwin had their third child together, it seemed like they might be ready to take a break from adding newborns to their brood. "At this point it's been so many babies," Hilaria told Hola! USA in 2018. "I think we have to do one baby at a time. I think we're not going to like close up shop but at the same time we have to kind of reevaluate." Well, as anyone who follows celeb baby news knows, they did not wait long before they got back to expanding their family.
Hilaria announced on Instagram on March 29, 2022, that she and her movie star husband were expecting their seventh "Baldwinito." She wrote, in part, "We were pretty sure our family was complete, and we're beyond happy with this surprise...Our new baby is a very bright spot in our lives. A blessing and a gift during such uncertain times." With so many little ones to keep track of, it can be hard to remember who is who in the Baldwinito circle. Here's the truth about Alec Baldwin's kids.
Hilaria Baldwin has had multiple miscarriages
Since their marriage in 2012, Alec and Hilaria Baldwin have been ever-expanding their family, though that doesn't mean they haven't been free from heartbreak or complication. In 2019, Hilaria suffered two miscarriages and has been open about how difficult the process is. "As a woman, in charge of housing and growing a baby, it's easy to feel guilty — as if you did something wrong to cause the miscarriage, no matter how many doctors tell you that's not the case," she wrote for Glamour in 2020. "Sometimes it's easier to make ourselves the enemy, to blame ourselves than it is to accept support and care."
During Infertility Awareness Week in 2021, Hilaria posted on Instagram about her journey after losing her two babies in 2019. She mentioned how she thinks about the loss every day and that connecting within a community is a way she has found comfort in grief. Given the high statistic of one in four pregnancies ending in miscarriage, it's important for the topic to be destigmatized. Hilaria normalizing the conversation can help many other women going through the same process.
Ireland Baldwin is his oldest kid
Before he connected with Hilaria Baldwin, Alec Baldwin was married to actor Kim Basinger. The two welcomed daughter Ireland Baldwin in October 1995. Alec and Basinger separated a few years after Ireland was born.
In 2007, when he was in the middle of a nasty custody battle with Basinger, Alec famously left a scalding voicemail for his child in which he called her a "thoughtless little pig." After his message leaked, a media firestorm ensued. Understandably, it was not easy on his kid, who was 11 years old at the time. Ireland has since forgiven Alec, and all these years later, the two seem to be in a solid place. In a February 2022 Instagram video, she even alluded to the comment in which she said, "I think pigs are cute so jokes on you." We can't argue there, pigs are very cute.
Speaking of jokes, at the "The Comedy Central Roast of Alec Baldwin," Ireland referred to her dad as a "big old ham" and said he wouldn't ever say anything of that nature to her again because she would "kick his a**," per Us Magazine. She went on to tell her dad that she adored and loved him, showing that they have moved on from the incident, the outlet added. They've even colluded on poking fun at the voicemail situation in posts together like in 2015 when Alec and Ireland held up a children's book titled "If I Were a Pig."
Ireland Baldwin has been open about her struggles
Being real with fans and followers is something Alec Baldwin's eldest has always tried to do, even when it means tackling uncomfortable subjects. Ireland Baldwin has opened up about her own struggles with mental health and eating disorders, and she's touched on the pitfalls of social media. The model has said that social media has taken a toll on her at times, and she encourages others to be good to themselves no matter what.
"Don't let people make you feel guilty for having to take a walk or take some space or stay home because you're not feeling good," she wrote on Instagram in January 2022. "Surround yourself with people who understand or at least try to. And if you're feeling anxious right now... deep breaths. You're going to be ok." That January post highlighted her struggles with anxiety and cardiophobia, which is the fear that one is having a heart attack or other cardiovascular-related issues. Ireland has also talked about anxiety attacks too as a way to help others find community in their mental health journeys.

Carmen Baldwin is the actor's second child
A little over a year after they married, Alec Baldwin and Hilaria Baldwin welcomed their first child together in August 2013. Carmen Gabriela Baldwin was probably 99% pineapple because her mama evidently ate an inordinate amount of the fruit while she was pregnant — or at least, that's what Alec told People magazine at the time. Carmen has been walking red carpets for years with her celebrity parents and watching her grow up through social media has been an adventure for fans of the Baldwins.
In 2021, Hilaria posted an Instagram Story about turning a staple-induced boo-boo into a lesson for little Carmen (via People). After getting a staple lodged into her finger, Carmen had to have a doctor remove it and Hilaria commended her kiddo for her temperament. "I told her how brave she was — she said, 'I wasn't brave, I was crying a bit,'" Hilaria recounted. "I told her that being brave doesn't mean you don't cry, it means you asked for help and you put one foot in front of the other and kept on ... bravery doesn't mean you can't show emotions." That's a big lesson for a then seven-year-old, but one that will serve her well as she gets older.
Rafa Baldwin appreciates a good pair of PJs
Another awkward Alec Baldwin moment happened when Hilaria Baldwin was giving birth to their son Rafael "Rafa" Thomas Baldwin in June 2015. According to Insider, Hilaria shared a screengrab of a Mirror story about a woman being shushed by her partner while going into labor and noted that she went through a similar experience. In the Instagram Story, Hilaria said Alec mistakenly asked her to quiet down as she was about to give birth to Rafa because he happened to be on the phone. "He realized he sounded like an a** and he cowered," she said.
Life went on for the Baldwins after that incident and little Rafa became the kiddo who loved to stay in his pajamas. People noted in 2021 that Rafa has often been photographed with the family in his comfy PJs and we don't blame him — normal clothes can be the worst. The People report was in response to an Instagram post from Hilaria celebrating Rafa being comfortable in non-sleepytime attire. "Rafa is wearing clothes," she wrote with a heart and crying emoji. "He loves his pjs and he can always dress as he wishes...but it's nice to see him this way too. I always want him to feel 100% Rafael. Let our babes find their path on their own terms..."
Leonardo Baldwin is his dad's little lion
Through celebrating the birth of Leonardo "Leo" Ángel Charles Baldwin, father Alec Baldwin let his Instagram followers know he'd already given the little one a nickname: Leoncito, which means "little lion" in Spanish. Alec and Hilaria Baldwin's third child together was born in September 2016. Chatting with Extra ahead of Leo's arrival, Hilaria shared, "I feel like all of our children were semi-surprises, in a good way, good surprise, positive surprises."
Given the close proximity of Leo and Rafa's ages, there was little time to adjust for mama Hilaria's body between pregnancies. While she's been open about body changes and encouraging mothers to love themselves in other pregnancies, it was more evident while carrying Leo. "Being my third baby in three years, I am a true believer that our bodies are amazing, and we should celebrate them, rather than feel embarrassed and hide until the baby weight is entirely gone," she wrote in a post on Instagram early in her third pregnancy. Now that their oldest kids are a little older, Hilaria is still posting photos of Leo and his siblings loving on each other and it's too cute.
Co-sleeping didn't work for Romeo Baldwin
When baby number four arrived in May 2018, Hilaria Baldwin posted to Instagram that they were still contemplating a name and big sister Carmen Baldwin had a few ideas — though she didn't share what those were. A few days later, also on Instagram, Hilaria announced that the newest Baldwinito was named Romeo Alejandro David Baldwin. This fourth little one joined three other siblings all under the age of five, which probably made for a rowdy household for Hilaria and Alec Baldwin.
In 2019, Hilaria announced that she was going to stop co-sleeping with Romeo, something she has done with all of her children when they're nursing. In her Instagram post, she wrote, "Romeo has begun to move around much more than my other ones while he sleeps." Co-sleeping has long been a hotly debated topic because of the potential dangers posed to babies and small children, per NPR. People mentioned that this choice also came just a month after Hilaria announced her first of two miscarriages in 2019.
Like his other siblings, Romeo seems right at home with the Hollywood crowd. Take, for example, when he and the other Baldwin babies put on matching suits for the premiere of "The Boss Baby: Family Business." Alec posted an Instagram photo of Romeo looking serious on the blue carpet and wrote, "Special Agent Romeo Baldwin scans the crowd during the big event, ever on the alert, while keeping calm, focused, cool."
The sweet meaning of Eduardo Baldwin's name
After a difficult 2019, in which Hilaria Baldwin suffered two miscarriages, she and her husband Alec Baldwin welcomed their fifth child together in September 2020. Eduardo "Edu" Pau Lucas Baldwin's birth was announced on Instagram by mama Hilaria. "His name means 'wealthy guardian of peace and light," she shared. Dad Alec celebrated the birth of his sixth (Hilaria's fifth) child by posting a photo he took with Hilaria and Edu in the hospital room. "I love you, @hilariabaldwin," he wrote in the Instagram caption. "My karma is your karma. Your karma is mine."
At about eight months old, Edu had an allergy scare that sent him and his worried mama to the hospital which was something Hilaria said she hadn't experienced before as a mom. "Doesn't matter how many kids you have, there are always moments that shake us, as there is no way we can prepare," she wrote of the incident on Instagram.
Lucia Baldwin arrived six months later
Fans were surprised when, just six months after the birth of Edu Baldwin, another Baldwinito arrived. Alec Baldwin and Hilaria Baldwin shared with the world that María "MariLu" Lucía Victoria Baldwin was born via surrogate in March 2021.
The Daily Mail noted that it has never been publicly confirmed who the surrogate was or whether or not either the eggs or sperm were from either Alec or Hilaria. (Of course, that is not any of our business unless they want it to be our business.) The outlet also pointed out that a snapshot Hilaria posted of Edu and Lucia together suggests they may be biological siblings. In her caption accompanying the beyond adorable photograph of the two little ones, Hilaria shared, "María Lucía Victoria and Eduardo Pau Lucas: our babies who bring light into our lives—almost like twins, we love you so much." Aw.
Another bundle of joy for the Baldwins
The Baldwin family is still growing. In March 2022, Alec Baldwin and Hilaria Baldwin confirmed to People that she's pregnant, and their newest addition is due in fall of 2022. Her multiple miscarriages may have informed her choice to use a surrogate for her sixth, but we can't say for certain. And that's okay. As an insider close to the family told People, "It's no one's business about a woman's right to choose how and when she expands her family."
Jessica Grose wrote for The New York Times in March 2021 that there are a lot of reasons why the public is fascinated by celebrity life, especially when it comes to parenthood. Concordia University doctoral candidate Kathryn Jezer-Morton told Grose, "You could describe the audience's relationships with these accounts as a staring contest. I'm going to stare at it 'til it blinks — which is to say, I'm going to look at these images until I see a crack in the perfectly imperfect façade, a dose of reality in this world of bliss." Essentially the idea is that the public becomes swept up in the lives presented on social media and in popular culture in ways that are multifaceted. Whether we want to be these celebrities or are waiting for their downfall plays a role. In either case, it makes it harder for fans to let it go when they aren't given answers to their questions — especially around Hollywood babies.
