Strange Things About Pink And Carey Hart's Marriage
Pink and Carey Hart have been together for what seems like forever. The colorful pop star and her motocross hubby share two beautiful children (daughter Willow Sage and son Jameson), and for the most part, their down-to-Earth family flies under the radar.
But it hasn't exactly been a fairy tale for these two, and there are certainly some strange aspects to their lengthy romance. From their odd engagement to ugly rumors and wandering eyes, here are the weird things about Pink and Carey Hart's marriage.
She was the one who proposed
Pink told USA Today that Hart proposed to her numerous times, but she always said no. When she finally had a change of heart in 2005, she took matters into her own hands.
"I always joke that I tried to kick him out of my life eight times and he wouldn't go anywhere, so I married him," the singer giggled in a 2006 TV interview. "But the point behind that is that he's the most consistent, reliable man that I've ever known."
For her proposal, Pink said she held up a sign during one of Hart's motocross races. The sign said, "Will u marry me?" But her scheme didn't go as planned. "He actually didn't look at the sign!" she said. "He was just concentrating and doing his little thing. I was like, 'Oh, that's a sign, I'm not going to do it again.'"
But she did.
"Next race, I wrote it again, and I said, 'Lap three, look at the sign. And he did, and he almost killed a guy veering off the race, and he said yes! Actually, he said, 'Are you kidding me?'" She replied, "'No, I wouldn't have ruined your race if I was kidding.'"
Their relationship was off and on for a long time
Since meeting in 2001 at the X-Games in Philadelphia, Pink and Hart have split twice, first in 2003 for about a year. She told USA Today, "We crashed a couple of times [but I wasn't scared off]... [Hart is the man for me] without me wanting to totally admit it. I believe in the work, in the history, and in not bouncing from situation to situation. It felt like we weren't finished."
Pink dated two other stars while on a break from Carey
During a break with Hart, Pink briefly dated actress Kristanna Loken. She discussed the relationship and her sexuality with Contact Music in 2003. "She kissed me and she tried to dominate me and I will not be dominated by anyone. People can say what they want but I have good taste. I mean, look at her. Wow. That woman is beautiful." She added, "All men want to think that women are bisexual. That is the fantasy. But then if a woman really is bi, it becomes unsexy, the fantasy is lost. The attitude has always been there but maybe it will change. People are getting a lot more open-minded about people being gay."
Pink also had a brief fling with rocker Tommy Lee, but insisted it wasn't as hot and heavy as the tabloids claimed. "It never really began. He was just a super-cool guy, fun to hang out with. He's got a bad rep unfortunately, but so do I," she told Contact Music. "I've known him for a long time. He's just a friend. We were never really together. I'm a single lady this year. I've been in relationships since I was 15 and am ready to be focused and not have to worry about somebody calling me or me not calling somebody. I've always been really responsible believe it or not. But I don't want to be responsible this year."
They take 'breaks'
When asked about her "combative" marriage on The Ellen DeGeneres Show, Pink replied, with a chuckle, "We take breaks... The first one was about a year, and the second one was 11 months." When asked if another was on the table anytime soon, Pink deadpanned, "We're due."
The most infamous break was in 2008, when Pink announced on her website (via MTV News) that she and Hart had amicably separated after about two years of marriage.
"The most important thing for you all to know is that Carey and I love each other so so much," she said. "This breakup is not about cheating, anger, or fighting. I know it sounds like cliché bulls**t, but we are best friends, and we will continue to be. All I know at this point is that I want to make the best album I can, and Carey wants to do the best possible job he can with everything he has going on. He is a good man, so please support him as well. One never knows the future, but mine and Carey's just might involve beach babies and sunshine one day. Just not right now."
Carey may have had a wandering eye
Hart allegedly dabbled with other women when he and Pink had problems. In September 2007, sources told Us Weekly (via the Daily Mail) that Pink had been venting to pals about her split. "She constantly hassles the poor guy about cheating on her and is 'always b***hing and moaning at him," an insider said.
The tab claimed Hart was spotted getting cozy with at least one other woman. "It sure didn't look like he was married that night!" a source said. "He had a cute blonde in a tight dress sitting on his lap all night. They were laughing and drinking vodka with her arms wrapped around him in a corner VIP booth. Carey never mentioned Pink the entire night."
Their reconciliation was mostly Pink's doing
When Pink and Hart split in 2008, she wasn't happy about it. They were on the outs for the better part of a year, until she made a big move to mend fences. (It helped that the couple never actually signed their divorce papers.)
"Eleven months after we broke up, he asked me to fly to Las Vegas to perform on New Year's Eve at his club," she told Redbook. "I wanted to see him. And I looked hot... After sound check I told him that he needed to come to my room. I had made him a photo album of all the cards he had ever given me, of all the photos of our entire relationship. I spent months on this album. On the last page, I pasted a photo of me from a really bad movie I made years ago with my neck slit and blood everywhere. Next to it I wrote, 'This is me without you.' On the next page, there was a picture of a baby. And I wrote: 'The rest is unwritten.' The divorce papers that we never signed were behind that page. I was like, 'The rest is up to you.' And I did all of this in his favorite bra and panties."
Don't think Pink gave it up too easily, though. "Carey said, 'I want to get back together.' And I said, 'Tell me in the morning.' And also, 'I'm not having sex with you.'" She added. "We laid together [but didn't have sex]."
Their schedules made their romance difficult
Pink told Redbook that when she and Hart separated, the problem was simply that they didn't get enough quality time together.
"Because we were working all the time; there was so much time between our visits. Carey would see me for five days and be gone for six weeks," she said. "We'd try to fix everything in those five days—you just can't do that. And it builds and builds and you don't even know what to say or fight about anymore, and there's no middle ground, and it's like, f**k it, we're not getting anywhere."
Speaking about their reunion, Hart told People, "We're rebuilding. Sometimes you have to take a couple of steps backwards to move forward."
He doesn't mind that she disses him in her songs
While they were separated, Hart appeared in Pink's 2008 music video for "So What." She even calls him a "tool" in the song, but he didn't mind.
Hart told Redbook in 2013, "Look, it's completely flattering that she's writing songs about me, calling me a tool and selling millions of albums doing it. I think it's pretty special to be the muse—it's the good, the bad, the ugly. I wouldn't expect anything else. That's why I love her, and why we're together."
Pink's 2012 album, The Truth About Love, featured a song called "How Come You're Not Here," in which Pink sings, "I heard she's cute, but she stores nuts like a squirrel." She told Rolling Stone that track was inspired by a hookup Hart had with someone else while they were separated, adding that his "first response to the song was 'Fuuu**ck. We can put that to bed now, right?'"
She gets frustrated by their occasional lack of intimacy
Pink revealed to Ellen DeGeneres that one thing she and Hart still argue about is not getting enough nookie.
"He always falls asleep putting Willow to bed. The other night I said, 'Are you going to stay up tonight?' And he said, 'I would like to.' I said, 'I don't really know what that means. Should I light candles and open wine and put on a show? Like, are we going big here? Or are you going to fall asleep again? So I lit the candles and opened the wine and an hour and a half later [he's asleep]," she said, adding with a chuckle, "Can't he just stay awake? He sucks."
They're domesticated
Pink and Hart used to party hard, but now they lead much quieter lives.
She told Us Weekly in May 2017, "I honestly can't believe how responsible I am. All of a sudden I'm a soccer mom and doing the damn thing. No one would have guessed this for me. Honestly, I didn't realize that you could enjoy it so much."
"When we're home, we're home," Hart told Rolling Stone in 2014. "Me and my wife are into Game of Thrones, and she sucked me into Nashville a little bit, but she'll watch Sons of Anarchy in return. But we have a kid, so the chance to watch TV is rare. I've seen Frozen too many times. But I got Willow into Scooby-Doo and Tom and Jerry, and she thinks they're the best things since sliced bread, and I'm like 'Score, I can actually watch this and not want to scratch my eyes out.'"
They battled split rumors when she was pregnant
In December 2016, when Pink was pregnant with son Jameson, a tabloid claimed she was leaving Hart. She mocked the report in an Instagram post, writing, "Apparently @hartluck I HAVE HAD IT!!!!!!! So you better fix this s**t, whatever it is, cause it's obviously BAD. Just s***ty! And before you leave can you please teach me how to set the alarm? I can't wait to take over your closet!!!!!! #moreclothes #ivehaditwiththissh**."
The rumors were, of course, false. A source told Us Weekly in May 2017, "They've been through a lot, but they are solid now. They love their life together."
