Shawn Mendes Shares The Most Valuable Advice Taylor Swift Gave Him

The "Treat You Better" singer learned the ropes from one of the best in the business.

In an interview with VMAN magazine, Shawn Mendes opened up about the best piece of advice he ever got when it comes to putting himself at ease on stage—and it came from superstar Taylor Swift.

"She told me not to be afraid to go out on stage," Mendes, 19, told the publication, "because everyone in the stadium came to have fun. This is not a judging contest, this is a concert."

And while Swift certainly passed on some sage wisdom, Mendes admitted that it doesn't necessarily apply to all of his fans. "People need to give [my fans] a little bit more credit. If something's not good, oh, they let me know," Mendes said.

Of course, just because Mendes' celebrity has gotten bigger, don't expect him to start taking his success for granted. "Any of this could be gone tomorrow," he shared with VMAN, noting that he tries to live in the present. "That's why you've got to make the most of it today. People say to me, 'What are you going to be doing in five years?' The thing is, I don't care! It's what I'm doing today that matters."

As E! News noted, Mendes was the opening act for Swift during her 1989 World Tour in 2015. But now, Mendes is the headliner. He's currently on the Illuminate World Tour, which is scheduled to end in Tokyo in December 2017.
