Britney Spears' Most Bizarre Behavior On Social Media
It's pretty safe to say that Britney Spears' social media accounts are, well, unique. The free spirited star often lets fans in on her most innermost thoughts across her accounts, which has opened her up to plenty of questions over the years. Pretty much everything pertaining to her activity has been speculated, from fans questioning whether she actually has control over her social media to conspiracy theories she was trying to send out cryptic messages in her seemingly random posts amid her conservatorship.
The star has always denied that though, putting rumors to rest that she's not in control of her favorite platform, Instagram, in June 2020. Spears apologized for "pretending" to be happy when she wasn't during her conservatorship in a post, claiming that making out she was alright "has actually helped." Sharing a quote about reading more fairytales, she continued, "I decided to post this quote today because by golly if you're going through hell ... I feel like Instagram has helped me have a cool outlet to share my presence ... existence ... and to simply feel like I matter despite what I was going through."
Spears' social media manager, Cassie Petrey, also cleared things up, claiming on her own Instagram in February 2020 (via Vanity Fair) that Spears "creates her own posts and writes her own captions," while denying the star was leaving secret messages. So now all that's out the way, let's take a deep dive into the fantastical world of the Princess of Pop.
What the heck is Project Rose?
Seriously, what in the world was Project Rose? Britney Spears had fans guessing for months throughout 2020 and 2021 when she debuted "Project Rose" or "Just A Touch of Rose" on Instagram. The star repeatedly shared photos and videos of herself wearing the same outfit — a blue and white long sleeved off the shoulder crop top and white shorts — and rocked pink flowers in her hair while outside.
In September 2020, she spoke out after fans questioned why she appeared to be posting the same photos months apart. "A lot of people have been saying that a lot of my posts are not new but they're old. But just to let you guys know, none of my pictures or posts are more than a month old," she claimed on Instagram Stories (via Daily Mail). "Yes, I know. I did wear the same top 17 times, but it's for a project — Project Rose. And you will be seeing way more of Project Rose in the future."
In September 2020, she claimed on Instagram she'd moved on to a new project called "Just a Touch of Red," but then celebrated Project Rose's one year and nine days anniversary in August 2021 when she shared a video seemingly taken months earlier. She wrote, "Why does this project smell so f****** good still today."
As for what Project Rose was really about? That's still up for debate, but there are plenty of theories out there.
Stripping down
Britney Spears clearly knows that confidence is key, as she feels confident enough to strip down for the world to see. Spears has repeatedly bared all on Instagram, often posting sultry selfies without a stitch on, seemingly without much of an explanation.
In late February 2022, she shared various risqué photos of her completely naked at the beach with diamond emojis covering her modesty while writhing around on the sand. In what may have been a nod to the infamous "Project Rose," she put five red rose emoji in the caption. A few days later, she shared topless photos seemingly taken at the same time as she covered her chest with her hands.
Prior to that, in July 2021, Spears posted a short video to Instagram, again without explanation, which showed her swaying from side to side with her hands covering her breasts. The star posed outdoors again, this time rocking unbuttoned Daisy Dukes as she stood in front of a tree. That upload came with nothing but three lips emoji.
In addition to a number of other totally nude uploads, the star has also almost totally stripped down for the gram. Another of her unexplained exposed uploads came in January 2022 when she posted three photos in a red thong with her back to a mirror. She concluded the post with a somewhat out of place snap of a white glove holding a red rose. We've got to hand it to her though, she looks gorgeous every time!
Those infamous dance videos
How could we talk about Britney Spears' more, well, odd, social media postings without mentioning her infamous dance videos? The star has become almost as famous for her twirly dance clips as her hits, with her regularly (and we mean regularly, you can check out one here, or here, or here) posting videos of her dancing, seemingly freestyle, and usually at home. One of the more bizarre clips — which has since been deleted — saw her dancing to her ex-boyfriend Justin Timberlake's "Filthy" as she addressed their breakup, per People.
It's safe to say Spears has gotten plenty of attention for her moves, which she's addressed on (where else?) Instagram. In July 2020, she posted a quote that encouraged her haters to "kiss my a**, eat s*** and step on Legos" while addressing those who slammed her dancing. "I'm not gonna be performing on any stages anytime soon with my dad handling what I wear, say, do, or think," she wrote in the caption, referring to her father, Jamie Spears, and her conservatorship, adding she'd "much rather share videos YES from my living room instead of onstage in Vegas."
In another clip shared in March 2022, she admitted dancing for the camera was "fun," writing, "I know I'm not the best dancer, a lot of people make fun of the way I move but honestly as long as I'm moving and expressing my body outwardly in someway at this point ... that's healing to me !!!"
Britney in handcuffs
Britney Spears gave us quite the fright for Halloween 2021. In an upload shared to Instagram, she uploaded several photos of herself lying on the floor in a hot pink slip with her hands in fluffy leopard-print handcuffs. The star appeared to be passed out and had fake blood smeared across her face, hands, and chest. She shared three photos in total showing her at various angles, including a full length look that showed she was rocking sky-high heels with a rug horizontally underneath her.
Spears also included a video that had no sound, but appeared to have been sped up. In that, the fourth and final upload, she showed a close up of the fake blood on her neck before focusing on her lips, and it's safe to say people were confused.
The caption is now blank, but, according to BuzzFeed News, it hasn't always been that way. The original caption detailed a fictitious murder mystery the star seemingly made up, and she was playing the role of a woman found dead on the floor by a neighbor. Spears explained she did the bizarre display for Halloween, before writing, "If interpretation is coincided with opposition what are the beneficial effects of an imaginative reality ??? Is EFFORT to play it out an insult ???? Or is effort simply put ... just a play ??? One might do it better but who on Earth would do one bad ???" Erm, we're not sure.
Did Britney Spears lie on Instagram?
Moving away from the creepy for a second, we're now taking a peek at the potentially unexplainable, as we look at when Britney Spears has been accused of lying on social media (or even having someone else run her account for her).
The contention started after Spears shared the same photo twice (one in black and white and the other in color) in September 2021, which she claimed was taken the weekend prior while celebrating her and Sam Asghari's engagement. In the caption, she claimed they were taken "with clip in extensions." All well and good, right? Wrong!
Fans quickly called out the star, claiming the snaps weren't new. Not only did some point out that they'd seen a very similar photo (with the same clothes and makeup) on Instagram the previous February, but they noticed Spears' hair was vastly different than when she got engaged. In a video shared on September 12, the star had dark red dye in the bottom few inches of her hair as she proudly flashed her ring. "THESE ARE OLD PICTURES. They have been posted in February already. Y'all blind?" one person wrote, while another asked, "Wait your hair is not red here ?"
Spears appeared to play down the drama, though. She posted a dance video shortly after (which has since been deleted) and claimed, per Tyla, that all the red dye "came out in the shower and it looked like a crime scene."
The fake therapy sessions
Britney Spears had everyone scratching their heads when she turned into a therapist in January 2022 for a pretty bizarre and seriously random skit about a therapist who blames, erm, bowel movements on their patient's issues with their partner. The clip was shared to Instagram in January as a skit called "Sessions with Ashley" and had a heavy pink and orange filter over it. In it, Spears played both the therapist and patient while talking directly to the camera. Ashley then tells the patient "I'm here to help you, but you need to give me the tools to help you with your relationship with Earl. Earl has a sickness, and your bowel movements are obviously getting in the way of showing him your affection towards him."
We're giving the "Alien" singer plenty of points for creativity on this one, but the reception was a little mixed in the comments section. "What the f*** is this," one person asked, while another claimed, "This account gets more and more worrying every week." Others were supportive of the star, though, including one person who commented, "And what a skit. I applaud you for thinking outside of the box and sharing an original thought. The world needs more creativity like this."
Spears did a similar skit on Instagram the month prior, in which she once again played a patient and therapist. The star got very candid about her own real therapy sessions in the caption, which she claimed she did "against [her] will."
British-ney
Okay, so we know there was a dark period in Britney Spears' life where she would speak in a confusing British accent. We saw it in various paparazzi videos from 2008, and it appeared to come back in a few clips shared to Instagram.
In March 2021, fans noticed Spears slip out of her Louisiana accent and into one that would seem more at home in London as she filmed herself listening to birds tweeting during a vacation to Maui. The star appeared to start the Instagram video by speaking in her natural accent, but yelled that the birds were "so loud!" in an English accent at the end. "Why do you sound British here," one person asked in the comments section, while another suggested, "Britney has a British accent in this video because that's how she [reacts to] stress, just check her old videos from 2007."
In October 2021, Spears posted a video using the accent again as she told her Instagram followers she'd been sent scripts that claim to tell her life story, but said it was very "puzzling" for her because none of them were accurate. Spears' accent has come under the spotlight before, as it's been reported that the star may slip out of her natural voice when dealing with particularly stressful periods. TMZ reported that during one of the lowest points in her life, Spears "spoke almost entirely in a British accent" during the night she was taken to a mental health hospital in 2008.

Babies and marriage
We know Britney Spears has two children, sons Sean Preston and Jayden James, from her marriage to Kevin Federline, but did you know she also has a daughter named, Brennan? Well, kind of. In October 2021, Spears posted an Instagram video that showed her holding a doll, which she claimed was her new baby. Spears held it up to the camera as she moved its head in time with hers while music played in the background. The person filming, presumably Sam Asghari, then commented how much they looked alike. "I had a baby y'all ... I will be taking some time off shooting at home every day !!! Her nursery is beautiful and her name is Brennan ... we even look alike !!! My first [girl]!!!" the star wrote in the caption.
But that wasn't the only time she'd hinted at growing her family in a more, let's say, unconventional way. In March 2022, she shared a snap of her on her knees in the sand during a trip to the beach, only wearing string bikini bottoms and told fans she was "Planning on having babies in Polynesia!!!!!!"
It's not just babies on the brain, either. The star has also hinted at marrying Asghari after their engagement. Also in March 2022, Spears appeared to suggest she could have secretly married her man after referring to him as her "husband" while celebrating his birthday on Instagram.
The random finds
It's safe to argue that Britney Spears' Instagram account sometimes looks a little more like a Pinterest page due to her seemingly pretty random collection of memes. The star clearly has a whole lot of fun on her page, often posting memes and videos that let us know exactly how she's feeling... or not, in some cases.
In November 2021, for example, she posted a video of someone doing Japanese multiplication, telling her followers that it was "A different way of learning." The month before that, she posted a captionless upload in an old-fashioned style that read, "Don't approach my desk unless you want a stapler up your a**." Then there are the uploads that shift from kinda random to kinda creepy. In March 2021, Spears shared another old post that looked like it was from the Victorian era, and showed a woman holding a baby with a skull for a head. "Devil is in the details," she wrote in the caption, claiming she "wouldn't want this baby to hit me one more time !!!!"
Another look at some more random finds? This odd January 2022 post of a cartoon girl playing the piano for her harrowing toys has us creeped out, while this caption-less snap of a red apple from November 2021 has us scratching our heads.
Regardless of what we (or others) think, Spears certainly appears to be having a pretty great time doing her own thing with her own accounts — and so she should!
