The Truth About Selena Gomez And Nick Jonas' Relationship
Everybody knows that singer and actor (and occasional at home cooking show host) Selena Gomez and Justin Bieber dated for many years when they were younger. But how many know about her brief fling with Nick Jonas of the Jonas Brothers? It's understandable if it slipped your mind — the relationship was definitely blink-and-you'll-miss-it – but they were very much an item.
Despite the Jonas and Gomez keeping their canoodling out of the spotlight, there were a lot of highs and lows to the relationship. From getting together shortly after he dated Miley Cyrus to an alleged rift between Cyrus and Gomez to an awkward-as-heck date in front of the paparazzi, there's quite a bit to unpack here. Regardless of if you 'shipped them or if you missed them, we've got you covered.
Here's what went down between the "Love You Like a Love Song" singer and Priyanka Chopra's other half.
Was it really Selena Gomez vs. Miley Cyrus?
Back in 2007, Selena Gomez was busy making a name for herself over on Disney Channel. In addition to nabbing the role of Alex Russo on "Wizards of Waverly Place," she also appeared on a couple episodes of "Hannah Montana" alongside Nick Jonas's then-girlfriend, Miley Cyrus. That's why teen and tween jaws dropped everywhere when Jonas and Gomez got together soon after Cyrus and Jonas called it quits in late 2007 after about a year of being publicly linked.
Gomez and Jonas reportedly started dating in 2008. The relationship lasted into 2009, with Gomez even making a not-so-cameo appearance in the Jonas Brothers' 2008 music video for "Burnin' Up," playing the girl of Nick's dreams.
At the time, rumors abounded of an alleged rift between Gomez and Cyrus. However, in 2016, the "Lose You to Love Me" songstress set the record straight, telling W Magazine (via Teen Vogue), "We never feuded. We both liked the same guy when we were 16. It was just a Hilary Duff–Lindsay Lohan thing: 'Oh, my God, we like the same boy!'" she said, referring to the infamous feud between the "Lizzie McGuire" star and "The Parent Trap" actor over singer Aaron Carter. Gomez added, "We are now completely settled in our own lives."
Selena and Nick were on again and off again
After breaking up in 2009, Selena Gomez and Nick Jonas reportedly "rekindled their romance" in 2010. True to form, they never publicly confirmed that they had ever been an item, nor would they confirm they were back together. The reunion, however, was not meant to last. By March of that year, they called it quits again, with a source close to the couple telling People at the time, "They were an item, but they are no longer together."
The source later told the outlet, "it's evident to everyone that they will always have a super strong connection." Neither Gomez nor Jonas ever publicly commented on the split, but the source told People that Gomez was getting by with a little help from friends. "It's never fun to go through a breakup," the source said at the time, "but Selena has a lot of friends she's leaning on for support."
Selena Gomez and Nick Jonas can laugh about their time together now
The exes have seemingly been able to laugh about those good, ol' days in the media. Case in point? In 2018, a decade after they first got together, Selena Gomez confronted Nick Jonas on an episode of BBC Radio 1's show "Heart Rate Monitor," making him explain some questionable behavior during one of their dates. "I would like to remind you of a time where we all went to Central Park together," she smiled via video link. "It was definitely over ten years ago. I was wondering if that brought up anything for you?"
Jonas, who took the hilarious confrontation in stride, awkwardly fumbled through his answer. "Okay so this was at a time when my brothers and I were a boy band and we were in Central Park," he began. "We were very private about our relationship and she was unhappy that her Central Park experience was ruined by the fact that I walked about 20 feet away from her, even though [the paparazzi] are taking pictures of us and obviously we're there together."
"I was like, 'It'd be better if we stand about 25 feet apart,'" he continued. "So it ruined her Central Park experience. So her and Taylor Swift, who was dating my brother Joe, but we never confirmed it, walked 25 feet behind us as we walked through the park by ourselves."
Glad they can laugh about it now because ... yikes.
