Hollywood's Most Messed Up Families
Dysfunctional families come in many shapes and sizes, but these broods take the cake when it comes to chaos and drama. From feuding siblings, to bitter divorces, and even drug abuse, these kinfolk are among the most messed up in Hollywood. From the Kardashians and the Osbournes to the Spellings and the Jacksons, see who made the cut.
The Osbournes
The Osbournes are first-rate crazy when it comes to out-of-control famous families. Fans got a glimpse into the madness in their eponymous reality show, which ran for four seasons ending in 2005. Ozzy, Sharon, Jack, and Kelly have always been an open book about their family troubles—be it drugs, infidelity or depression.
Kelly took that philosophy to heart when she penned her memoir There is No F**king Secret: Letters from a Badass B*tch. In it, she details a terrifying moment in 2002 when she essentially became the caretaker for her parents. Sharon was fighting stage-three colorectal cancer and Ozzy was back on drugs. "[One night] Mum had a seizure," Kelly wrote (via People). "I finally called for an ambulance, and together with the idiot nurse, we got Mum stabilized."
On the night of Sharon's seizure, Ozzy reportedly nearly overdosed. "I had reason to be scared," Kelly wrote. "Dad was there in his boxers, and I watched him scoop his hand into a bowl of pills, swallow a handful of something, and then wash it down with vodka, like it was water and he was dying of thirst."
Kelly wound up in an ambulance with both her parents. "I had to make phone calls, sign papers, talk to doctors, console family members, and, at nineteen, make adult decisions that would have been hard for someone three times my age," she wrote.
The Kardashians
There's nothing like reality TV to expose a family's failings, and this bunch burst onto the scene in 2007 with Keeping Up With the Kardashians. Feuds and drama define this famous brood, but one of its more recent controversies involved the family's reaction to Caitlyn Jenner's transition from Bruce Jenner.
No member of the family seemed more pissed than Caitlyn's wife of 24 years, Kris Jenner, who spoke about the high-profile transition following the release of Caitlyn's memoir, The Secrets of My Life. "None of it makes sense," Kris said on the show. "I read it and basically the only nice thing she had to say was that I was great socially at a party one time... Everything she says is all made up. Why does everything have to be that Kris is such a b**ch and an a**hole?"
Daughter Kim Kardashian revealed that her mother and stepfather were not on speaking terms. She told Watch What Happens Live (via the Daily Mail ) that there is "zero" chance Kris and Caitlyn will ever exchange words again. "No, one. No, I would say two percent."
Additional family spectacles include Scott Disick's drinking woes, Khloé Kardashian's infamous marriage to Lamar Odom, who also battled substance abuse, and, of course Rob Kardashian's fiery relationship with ex-fiancée and baby mama Blac Chyna. Rob made waves in July 2017 when he posted explicit photos of Chyna on social media, prompting Chyna to seek a restraining order.
The Spellings
Actress Tori Spelling told Access Hollywood (via Us Weekly) that her father, famed TV producer Aaron Spelling, played a major role in the family's dysfunctional, particularly in her strained relationship with her mother, Candy Spelling.
"I was very much a daddy's girl... And as an adult, I can go back and look at the relationship and see that he kind of always positioned [Candy] as, like, he was good cop, she was bad cop. And he kind of created a little bit of that dynamic. It wasn't just all her," Tori said in 2014. "I think he created a lot of the competition between us. He was the good guy, so everyone vied for his attention, and a lot of that attention went from her to all me."
Tori has held out hope that she can develop a bond with her mom. "I think the biggest thing in a mother-daughter relationship is accepting the relationship for what it is, not what you want it to be," she told Us Weekly. "And I haven't gotten there yet."
The Winter-Workmans
Ariel Winter's relationship with her mom, Chrisoula Workman, was so rough that she emancipated herself in May 2015.
The following year, Winter unpacked her past with her mom on Good Morning America. "We haven't spoken in three and a half years," she said. The Modern Family star accused Workman of being both emotionally and physically abusive. "It's already hard enough for abuse victims, but it's harder in the public eye when everybody has an opinion." Winter said she's been reluctant to talk about her relationship "because it was really painful for me to watch my mom go on news outlets...and kind of spread things everywhere—when it's really just private, family business," she said.
The Duggars
When the Duggar family debuted on reality TV in 2008, they were portrayed as a large Christian family with strong morals, but by 2015, that pristine image was beginning to crack. At that time, news broke that eldest son Josh Duggar allegedly molested five girls in 2002 when he was 14. Two of his victims were reportedly his sisters, Jess and Jill Duggar, according to Us Weekly.
"Twelve years ago, as a young teenager, I acted inexcusably for which I am extremely sorry and deeply regret. I hurt others, including my family and close friends," Josh said in a statement. "I confessed this to my parents who took several steps to help me address the situation. We spoke with the authorities where I confessed my wrongdoing, and my parents arranged for me and those affected by my actions to receive counseling." The family's hit show, 19 Kids and Counting was pulled from the airwaves as the family retreated from the spotlight.
Months later, the Duggar family image was rocked again with news that Josh had used the popular infidelity website Ashley Madison to cheat on his wife. "I have been the biggest hypocrite ever," he said in another statement (via Us Weekly). "While espousing faith and family values, I have secretly over the last several years been viewing pornography on the internet and this became a secret addiction and I became unfaithful to my wife." In spite of it all, Josh and his wife did not get divorced. In fact, they announced that they're expecting their fifth child in 2017.
The Knowles-Carters
The Knowles-Carter family is usually buttoned up when it comes to its public persona, but the tight-knit family's image unraveled before the world when footage of an elevator brawl between Solange Knowles and brother-in-law Jay Z went public in 2014. While the true source of the fight was never revealed, rumors abound that it had something to do with Jay Z being unfaithful to wife Beyoncé.
Solange has since said she's made peace with the incident, and Beyoncé made cracks about the elevator debacle in her song "***Flawless." She also appeared to unload a lot of dirty laundry, including infidelity, on her Lemonade album.
Jay Z also addressed their skeletons on his 4:44 album and in a short documentary called Footnotes for 4:44 in 2017. "I just ran into this place and we built this big, beautiful mansion of a relationship that wasn't totally built on the 100 percent truth and it starts cracking," the rapper said, according to CNN. "Then things start happening that the public can see." He continued, "Then we had to get to a point of, 'Okay, tear this down and let's start from the beginning. It's the hardest thing I've ever done."
The power couple appears to have recovered some balance and joyfully welcomed twins, Rumi and Sir Carter, in June 2017. Time will tell if they've truly mended fences.
The Jacksons
The Jackson family may have always been a little off, but things certainly went from bad to terrible after Michael Jackson's death in 2009. Following his passing, Katherine Jackson, Michael's mother, was granted guardianship over her son's three kids. The arrangement seemed fine for a few years, but the family seemingly went off the rails in early 2012, when Katherine was reported missing.
According to CNN, granddaughter Paris Jackson jumped on Twitter to report her grandmother "missing." She tweeted, "I haven't spoken with her in a week I want her home now." Katherine's son, Jermaine Jackson, later came forward to state that Katherine was just resting in Arizona under doctor's orders. The bizarre incident occurred during a time when the Jackson siblings were fighting the executors of Michael's estate, accusing them of fraud and abuse.
Family drama erupted again later that year. Surveillance footage at the Jackson home reportedly revealed a violent spat among family members.
Five years later, in February 2017, the family was back in the headlines after Katherine filed a formal complaint accusing her nephew-in-law, Trent Jackson, of elder abuse, according to the New York Daily News. Katherine also accused Trent of accessing her bank accounts without permission. She was granted a temporary restraining order, which was dismissed weeks later.
The Palins
Former vice presidential candidate Sarah Palin and her rowdy family aren't afraid to trade blows with others. According to USA Today, the famous family brawled at a birthday party in Anchorage, Alaska in September 2014. A police report described " a knockdown, drag-out affair of sucker punches, heavy drinking, bloody mouths, name-calling and a shirt hastily removed for a fight," reported USA Today.
Although it's unclear what started the fight, Bristol Palin supposedly unleashed on a girl who was bugging her sister, Willow Palin, and then the rest of the family jumped in like a WWE match. Brother Track Palin reportedly ripped off his shirt and flipped someone the bird. Sarah's husband, Todd Palin, wound up with a bloody nose. At one point, Sarah supposedly screamed, "Don't you know who I am? "
Adding to the realm of Palin family incorrectness: Bristol's relationship drama. Despite the family touting abstinence, Bristol became a teen mom and fought over custody of her son, Tripp, for years. She later recommitted herself to abstinence but proceeded to have a second child, a daughter named Sailor, out of wedlock. In 2016, she married Sailor's daddy, Dakota Meyer.
The Baldwins
Alec Baldwin isn't winning any father of the year awards anytime soon. He infamously yelled at his daughter, Ireland Baldwin, in a voicemail, calling her a "thoughtless little pig " in 2007. Ireland was just 11 years old at the time. As a result, his visitation rights were suspended, adding another bullet point to his nasty custody battle with ex-wife Kim Basinger.
A decade later, Baldwin says that voicemail still haunts him. "It's thrown in your face every day," he told Good Morning America in 2017. "There are people who admonish me or attack me and use that as a constant spearhead to do that... It's a scab that never heals 'cause it's being picked at all the time by other people. My daughter, that's hurt her in a permanent way."
However, there are signs that this daddy-daughter relationship has improved. Ireland poked fun at the past in an Instagram post in 2015. Sitting next to her father reading a kid's book called If I Were a Pig, she captioned the snap "If I Were A Pig... I would be Rude and Thoughtless of course!"
The Lohans
The Lohan family could easily be Hollywood's most messed up clan. Mom Dina, dad Michael, and daughter Lindsay have all wound up on the wrong side of the law. Lindsay has remained in trouble on and off since 2007 when she was arrested for multiple DUIs and made a few trips to rehab, according to ABC News.
Michael served time behind bars in 1990 for insider trading, then again in 1997 for violating his probation. In 2004, he was sentenced to more than two years in prison for reportedly attacking his brother-in-law with a shoe and driving impaired, among other things, reported Fox News. His estranged wife, Kate Major, filed a restraining order against him in 2012 and filed for separation in 2015. Dina is no angel either. She was arrested for a DUI in September 2013.
Speaking with Life & Style magazine, Michael said Lindsay's poor choices aren't her fault. "I don't think she should have taken any of the blame for what happened to her," he said. "It's my fault and Dina's fault. We put her in the middle of the divorce. Now it's up to me and Dina to make this better."
The Shannons
The world witnessed the chaos of the Shannon family on the now defunct series Here Comes Honey Boo Boo. The reality show, which ran from 2012 to 2014, ended after Mama June rekindled her romance with Mark McDaniel. He served time in prison for aggravated child molestation in 2004 and is a registered sex offender, according to CNN. June's daughter, Anna "Chickadee" Cardwell, said McDaniel molested her when she was 8 years old. According to Entertainment Tonight, June brought McDaniel back into the fold for two reasons: she felt sorry for him, and she wanted to provide closure for daughter Lauryn "Pumpkin" Shannon who, at one point, believed McDaniel might be her father.
That decision seems to have created more distance than closure. In June 2015, Anna filed a lawsuit claiming her mom owes her some $200,000 for filming the show. Anna also said she doesn't speak much to her mom or sisters. "None of them have called me, texted me or anything like that," she told E! News. "I can give two craps about them. They don't give two craps about me, so why give two craps about them?"
The Hudsons
It's no secret that Kate and Oliver Hudson have endured very public battles with their dad, Bill Hudson, over the years. On Father's Day 2015, Oliver posted a photo with his dad and Kate wishing her a "Happy abandonment day."
Bill responded in kind. "That was like a dagger to the heart," he told the Daily Mail in anger. "If what he wanted was me out of their lives, then he's succeeded. I don't want to see either of my eldest children ever again. It's over. I no longer recognize Oliver and Kate as my own. I would ask them to stop using the Hudson name. They are no longer a part of my life. He is dead to me now. As is Kate."
Despite those bitter words, the trio surprisingly began to make amends. "It actually started a dialogue... we're communicating now," Oliver told Watch What Happens Live months later. "I had an amazing three-hour conversation with him. And we're texting, and we're trying to see each other. So we might be mending something."
Kate, too, began working on her strained relationship with father, telling Howard Stern (via the New York Daily News) in 2016 that she's forgiven her dad. "I think forgiveness in any aspect is something that is complex. It is the greatest tool to be able to separate that attachment," she said. "So for me, I recognize whatever those issues are... That must be painful for him and I forgive him."
