The Truth About Rachel McAdams And Jamie Linden
Rachel McAdams has been a Hollywood fixture ever since she played the highly-quotable Regina George in 2004 teen classic "Mean Girls," appearing in box office hits "The Notebook," "Wedding Crashers" and "Doctor Strange," bagging a Best Supporting Actress Oscar nomination for her performance in "Spotlight" and even gracing the Eurovision Song Contest stage (well, kinda) in Netflix's pitch-perfect spoof "The Story of Fire Saga."
But we essentially know as much about her private life now as we did back in the mid-'00s. Yes, the Canadian is famously tight-lipped when it comes to affairs of the heart. She even managed to keep the tabloids at bay while dating fellow A-listers Ryan Gosling and Michael Sheen, both of whom were also former co-stars.
But McAdams has undoubtedly been the most secretive about her current beau, screenwriter Jamie Linden. In fact, the actor hasn't even mentioned his name in interviews, let alone spilled any beans. From red carpet no-shows to public displays of affection, here's a look at one of the most hush-hush relationships in Hollywood.
They first posed for photos together at a wedding
Incredibly, Rachel McAdams and Jamie Linden have never confirmed in public whether they actually are an item. But they first got tongues wagging in 2016 when they were snapped by paparazzi looking all loved-up during a trip to Paris, and in particular while queuing to get into the Louvre museum (via Daily Mail). Yes, even Hollywood stars have to wait their turn to see the Mona Lisa.
However, the first time they consented to be seen together in front of the camera occurred at a wedding. This wasn't their own, of course. McAdams and Linden haven't yet tied the knot — well, not as far as we know anyway. Instead, the loved-up pair posed for a picture at a friend's nuptials in Virginia just two months after their French getaway, per Daily Mail.
The image in question was uploaded to Instagram and showed a beaming, red-dressed McAdams cozying up to a sharp-suited Linden while surrounded by pals, including the bride. They haven't willingly been photographed together since.
Rachel McAdams isn't Jamie Linden's first Hollywood girlfriend
We all know about Rachel McAdams falling in love with Ryan Gosling and Michael Sheen, her co-stars in Nicholas Sparks slushfest "The Notebook" and Woody Allen classic "Midnight in Paris," respectively. But you might not be aware that her current partner also has a past when it comes to dating Hollywood names.
Yes, before getting together with the BAFTA Award nominee, Jamie Linden was reportedly in a two-year relationship with "New Girl" lead Zooey Deschanel. According to Us Weekly, the couple struck up a connection in 2012, shortly after the actor's divorce from Death Cab for Cutie frontman Ben Gibbard.
However, it wasn't to be, and in 2014, Deschanel was spotted getting cozy with another behind-the-scenes name, producer Jacob Pechenik on the set of "Rock the Casbah." Interestingly, McAdams had once taken over from the She and Him singer on a professional level, too. The Canadian played love interest Mary in Richard Curtis' rom-com "About Time," a role that had initially been penciled in for Deschanel.
Jamie Linden is also a Hollywood success
It turns out that Rachel McAdams isn't the only party in her relationship to have enjoyed Hollywood success. Yes, you might not recognize his face, or even his name, but Jamie Linden played an integral role in several hit films during the 2010s.
The American's most high-profile gig came in 2016 when he penned the script for "Money Monster," the tense financial thriller starring Julia Roberts and George Clooney and directed by Jodie Foster. Before that, Linden had also written the screenplay for a slightly more romantic affair, the Nicholas Sparks adaptation "Dear John," and true life football tale "We Are Marshall." He was later tasked with polishing up the script for Tom Holland fantasy "Chaos Walking," too.
Linden has even taken the director's chair himself. But despite an impressive ensemble cast that included Channing Tatum and "Parks and Recreation" co-stars Chris Pratt and Aubrey Plaza, 2011's high school reunion movie "10 Years" could only pull in around $278,000 at the box office.
They want to keep their kids away from the spotlight
Don't expect Rachel McAdams and Jamie Linden to invite the E! cameras around for a fly-on-the-wall reality TV series anytime soon. In a rare, relatively revealing interview with The Times in 2018, shortly after she'd become a mother for the first time, the former explained that she has no plans to put her young family in the spotlight.
Referring to her newborn son, whose name still hasn't been revealed to the public, "The Time Traveler's Wife" star said, "I want to keep his life private, even if mine isn't. But I'm having more fun being a mum than I've ever had. Everything about it is interesting and exciting and inspiring to me. Even the tough days — there's something delightful about them."
Not only is McAdams hellbent on keeping the cameras away from her offspring, she's also determined to keep any screens in general away from them, too. She added, "We never turn on the television when he's around. Pots and pans are good babysitters."
They've never walked the red carpet together
It's fair to say that photos of Rachel McAdams and Jamie Linden are few and far between. The pair have occasionally let their guard down long enough to be snapped by paparazzi while going shopping for home furnishings or strolling around a Los Angeles park. And then there was the time they willingly posed for a snap together at a friend's wedding. But a professionally-taken non-grainy pic of the happy couple still remains elusive.
Not only have the actor and screenwriter so far refused to say cheese for a glossy magazine shoot, but they also haven't even graced the red carpet together — And they've had several opportunities to do so, too.
Yes, since she first started dating Linden in 2016, McAdams has appeared in LGBT romance "Disobedience" and all-star comedy "Game Night." But the actor chose to grace the premiere of the former on her own, and she didn't even make an appearance at the first showing of the latter. Who knows whether their no-shows were a mutual decision? But Linden did seem happy enough to accompany his ex-girlfriend Zooey Deschanel on the red carpet on several occasions during their two-year courtship.
They live the country life
As you would expect from such a famously private couple, Rachel McAdams and Jamie Linden have kept entirely schtum about where they call home. But thanks to an unexpectedly candid (well, as candid as she gets) interview the former gave to ET in 2020, we do know that it's not in a big city.
Discussing how her young son had been coping with life during the pandemic, the "Sherlock Holmes" star revealed, "We live out in the country, so there's a little farm down the road, so we can go and look at the animals. We've been doing some planting, some okra, well, I mean, I do the planting and he [her son] snacks most of the day."
McAdams, who generously gave away $10,000 of her own money in support of healthcare workers while participating in the Heroes of Health: Covid-19 Stream-a-Thon, also talked about how grateful she is to have a young family during such a difficult time: "I have a very welcome distraction in my son, who is two. That's pretty much what I do ... all the time. He's so entertaining! I thought about, 'Would I rather be alone in quarantine? Or with my family?' You know, there are days sure, but I mean I would be so bored without him around to make it so fun."
They have a Channing Tatum connection
Actor Rachel McAdams and screenwriter/director Jamie Linden have yet to turn their personal relationship into a professional one. But they have certainly walked in similar career circles.
One of Linden's biggest Hollywood successes to date is his screenplay for "Dear John," the 2010 romantic drama starring Channing Tatum and Amanda Seyfried adapted from the same-named novel. Just two years later the former actor added another Nicholas Sparks weepie to his resume when he teamed up with McAdams on "The Vow."
And both parties had nothing but good things to say about the "Magic Mike" star, too. In a chat with HuffPost, McAdams said, "He's amazing. He makes coming to work such a pleasure. And he's so much fun. He's a little bit of a prankster, though. So I never quite knew what was coming next." And while promoting his directorial debut "10 Years," also starring Tatum, Linden told Collider, "You hear the stories about big Hollywood movie stars, but Channing is so the polar opposite of that. Channing is just a guy that wants to go and make things. As a director, you can't hope for anything more."
Another celebrity broke their baby news
Rachel Weisz might be a much-loved Academy Award-winning actor but it doesn't sound like she's necessarily someone you'd trust all your secrets with. "The Constant Gardener" star proved to be something of a blabbermouth when she confirmed rumors that her "Disobedience" co-star Rachel McAdams was with child while promoting the film in 2018.
Weisz was discussing the news that she, too, was expecting a baby (to husband Daniel Craig) to ET Canada when she let the news about McAdams slip: "It's like there was something in the water on that film, I don't know what happened. Yeah, we both — it's an incredible blessing. But yeah, we both, I don't know, sex was really good I guess, I don't know."
McAdams hadn't responded to the rumors herself about her pregnancy at the time. But she finally made things official during an interview with The Times six months later, describing motherhood as "the greatest thing that's ever happened to me, hands down." She continued, "[People say] your life is not your own any more, but I had 39 years of me, I was sick of me, I was so happy to put the focus on some other person."
They're not entirely averse to PDA
You might expect a couple who appear to pride themselves on their privacy to remain several meters apart at all times when out and about near any lurking paparazzi. But surprisingly, Rachel McAdams and Jamie Linden aren't entirely averse to the odd public display of affection.
In fact, they only got tongues wagging in the first place thanks to their loved-up behavior while queuing to get into Paris' the Louvre in 2016. Since then, they've been spotted snuggling up after enjoying a dinner date in Los Angeles and holding hands while shopping for home furnishings.
But you'll never see the pair uploading a PDA pic to Instagram. Both parties steer well clear of social media altogether, with McAdams telling The Times in 2018 that she's not even sure how to use the various platforms: "I'm not a great self-promoter, I wasn't good at selling Girl Guide cookies or Christmas wrapping paper."
They support each other's careers
Rachel McAdams didn't have to worry about missing her family when she returned to work for the first time since becoming a mom. The actor simply had her partner Jamie Linden and their toddler son join her on location.
McAdams spent time in both Scotland and Iceland filming "Eurovision Song Contest: The Story of Fire Saga," the affectionate spoof in which she starred alongside Will Ferrell as singer Sigrit Ericksdóttir. In an 2020 interview with ET the star revealed that she'd been accompanied by her close family throughout the shoot.
Referring to her first-born, McAdams said, "He'll never remember any of it, but I feel like somehow that might stick to his soul and his personality a little bit, so it was great to get to travel ... we've been sort of cuddled up for so long together that it was wonderful to go out into the world and get to work at the same time. I felt really lucky to be able to do that."
They still haven't confirmed the birth of their second child
Rachel McAdams took seven months to confirm that yes, the rumors were true and that she and boyfriend Jamie Linden had welcomed a baby boy into the world. But the "Morning Glory" actor has somehow managed to stay quiet even longer following reports she was expecting another addition to their family.
The tabloids first picked up on the fact that McAdams may be with second child in August 2020 when she was pictured outside a kids' clothes store in Los Angeles. As well as donning a peach-colored silk dress, magenta sandals, and black face mask, the Canadian also appeared to be sporting a visible baby bump.
But fast forward to early 2022, and there still hasn't been any glimpse of another newborn, or indeed that said bump was baby-related. McAdams hasn't given any interviews since the photos surfaced, nor has she appeared on screen. As of this writing, perhaps we'll find out for sure when she hits the promo trail for her upcoming movies "Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness" and "Are You There God? It's Me, Margaret."
