The Truth About Adam Driver And Lena Dunham's Relationship
Before he was cast as the "Star Wars" universe's modern villain, Kylo Ren, Adam Driver had humble beginnings in the entertainment world. Although it's hard to imagine a time before Driver became Hollywood's leading man in films like 2021's "House of Gucci" and "The Last Duel," he garnered an extensive variety of lesser-known credits, per IMDb.
But most fans of the former Marine first came across his acting talents when he appeared in the 2010's HBO smash hit "Girls," created by and starring actor and writer Lena Dunham. Driver played the role of Adam Sackler, who was the romantic interest of Dunham's character, and the show often featured intimate scenes between Driver and Dunham. Due to both of their amazing acting chops, these hot and heavy scenes made fans wonder if the on-screen couple actually had feelings for each other or if there was a secret off-screen showmance.
So, what is the true nature of Driver and Dunham's working relationship, and are the former "Girls" castmates still in touch?
Lena Dunham and Adam Driver were always purely professional
When Adam Driver walked into the "Girls" audition room, he certainly left an impression on the show's creators. This included Lena Dunham, who would later describe Driver as "powerfully odd" to the "Tribeca Talks" podcast. "The part in the script was described like Taylor Kitsch, kind of a golden-haired God," Dunham told The Hollywood Reporter. "And Adam is intensely striking and charismatic, but that's not how you would describe him. He just gave the most astonishing, strange audition."
Even though Driver and Dunham portrayed a passionate on-screen couple, there was no romantic relationship outside of that. In fact, Driver has been married to fellow actor Joanne Tucker since 2013! After "Girls" ended in 2017, both Driver and Dunham went off to work on other projects.
Dunham revealed in her THR interview on January 19, 2022 that the two have not had the chance to catch up in a long time. "Not for any sort of dark reason," Dunham clarified. "If I saw him, I'd be delighted." Driver has also expressed the same sentiment about the "Girls" cast. "I don't talk to them anymore," he joked to the audience at the 2020 Santa Barbara International Film Festival (via Showbiz Cheat Sheet). "No, yeah, we still keep in contact. We see each other from time to time. [But] not so much."
Will there be a Girls reboot with Adam Driver and Lena Dunham?
As new fans and old fans of "Girls" alike are rediscovering the show on streaming services, some have wondered if the show could one day be revived. With the reboot trend going on in Hollywood, such as the current "Sex and the City" reboot, HBO isn't immune to bringing back past hits. But when The Hollywood Reporter asked Lena Dunham about the possibility of a revival, she shut down any rumors that may be swirling. "We all recognize it's not time yet," Dunham articulated. "I want it to be at a moment when the characters' lives have really changed. Right now, everyone would just be wanting to see Kylo Ren."
And with Adam Driver's upcoming projects pulling him in many different directions, it is unlikely that he would be able to spare time for another production schedule. But Driver has expressed that he will always have respect for Dunham and the time he spent on the "Girls" set. "She's very specific in her writing," Driver sang his praises of Dunham on "Larry King Now" in 2017. "And she's very open with creating a space for everyone to try anything they want to and there's no pressure of time, ya know, or pressure to get it right. It really is ... a great working environment." Even if a reboot seems unlikely at the moment, it sounds like there's mutual adoration all around.
