The Real Meaning Behind The Weeknd's Best Friends
If you're at all aware of the personal lives of some of the biggest stars in show business, then you may be both informed and intrigued by The Weeknd's romantic situation. That's because, in the past, the music industry powerhouse has occasionally sparked a buzz when linked to other famous figures (despite apparently trying to do the opposite). For instance, he had an on-again-off-again relationship with model Bella Hadid as well as a somewhat shorter romance with singer Selena Gomez before being spotted more recently spending time with actor Angelina Jolie.
While that might suggest that The Weeknd is lucky in love, none of the relationships have resulted in a happily-ever-after. Although, if you take a listen to "Best Friends" from his new album "Dawn FM," which dropped on January 7, then you might realize that a typical commitment isn't exactly what he seems to want at the moment. He makes that quite clear while talking to a certain someone in the revealing, yet oh-so honest song.
The Weeknd doesn't want feelings to ruin what he has with his lover
"I would never burn you / I could never hurt you," The Weeknd promises to the person he's singing to in "Best Friends," per Genius. Although he's referring to someone who obviously means a lot to him and it's clear that he doesn't want to break their heart, he also points out that they happen to be friends with benefits, as they say.
"Don't try to take it further / Focus on the friendship / Get a little sidetracked / Catchin' little feelings / Thought we had arrangements," The Weeknd sings, stating how he wants things to be between them. On the other hand, he acknowledges what they want, adding, "You don't wanna have sex as friends no more."
But again, The Weeknd makes his position clear, saying, "Baby, what we got is secure / Been a part of toxic love / It tore us apart ... / Things you want, I'm not lookin' for." However, that doesn't mean that he doesn't care. In fact, he explains that he "don't want to be responsible / For your heart if we fall (Oh no) / 'Cause I'll get clumsy and tear it apart / I love you so (Oh yeah), but we can't get close." Instead, he tells this person, again and again, "You're my best friend now." But ... who is this best friend exactly, hmm?
