The Truth About Adam Driver And Daisy Ridley's Relationship

The "Star Wars" franchise is known for its epic interstellar battles, and the age-old conflict between good and evil — but that's not to say the movies don't have their fair share of romance! Who could forget Padmé Amidala and Anakin Skywalker's star-crossed love story, or Han Solo and Princess Leia's frenemies-to-lovers storyline? Likewise, the newest "Star Wars" trilogy — which kicked off with "The Force Awakens" in 2015 — featured plenty of romantic tension between villain Kylo Ren (Adam Driver) and heroine Rey (Daisy Ridley). According to Cheat Sheet, there's a good reason as to why the relationship resonated with fans: It's reminiscent of the romance that was originally shown between Padmé and Anakin in the prequels.

As one fan pointed out on Reddit, the two relationships act as inverted mirrors to one another. For example, per Cheat Sheet, "one ... begins with passion and ends in violence, while the other [begins] with violence and ends with admiration, respect, and something resembling love." Is it any wonder that Reylo shippers were cheering for a happy ending? That said, there were also those who felt that their relationship was toxic and potentially glorified domestic abuse. "If you really loved Rey as a character, you wouldn't ship Reylo because you'd understand that in doing so you are prioritizing her abuser over her own well-being," one fan wrote on Twitter in 2017. While the Rey-Kylo Ren relationship continues to divide "Star Wars" fans, what do we know about the real-life relationship between actors Driver and Ridley?

Daisy Ridley and Adam Driver admire each others' acting ability

Occasionally, real life imitates art — and Adam Driver's time with Daisy Ridley on the set of "Star Wars" blossomed into a full-fledged friendship. Their playful dynamic was fully apparent in a 2017 interview with V Magazine, during which both actors interviewed each other, rather than answering questions from a third party. At one point in the article, Ridley mentioned that she and Driver "became besties last year," which is unusual because she typically feels uncomfortable meeting new people. Driver responded that she "always seemed very open" and closed the interview by calling his co-star "brilliant."

The love fest didn't end there, either! During a 2017 interview with Oh My Disney, Ridley raved about Driver's acting skills. Likewise, Driver returned the compliment, telling the host that working with Ridley was a wonderful experience. "She's such an emotionally available person ... It's easy to be in scenes with her because I could listen to her all day. She has great instincts," he gushed. "[Driver] is so amazing in ["The Last Jedi"]," Ridley added. "Seriously, I can't speak highly enough about him. In the very basic sense of it all, he is the most amazing scene partner." While they might not share the romantic relationship that their characters do — Driver is married to Joanne Tucker, while Ridley has been linked with actor Tom Bateman since 2017 — it's clear there's nothing but love between these two.

Daisy Ridley and Adam Driver have this surprising thing in common

In addition to their onscreen chemistry, Daisy Ridley and Adam Driver share a surprising amount in common, such as the fact they both dislike watching their onscreen performances. Longtime Driver fans may already know that he struggled to re-watch the pilot of HBO show "Girls" for this very reason. "I saw the pilot of 'Girls' with Lena [Dunham] on her laptop," the star told Esquire UK. "I was like 'This is f***ing terrible.'" Likewise, watching his performance in "Star Wars: The Force Awakens" was equally uncomfortable for the actor. "Thankfully, I'm masked through a lot of it, so I could kind of hide that way," Driver shared with Vogue in 2017. "I remember being sick to my stomach and almost vomiting in the theater at the premiere which was just ... very disconcerting, really."

Ridley was not the veteran actor that Driver was when "Star Wars: The Force Awakens" hit theaters, but she was just as insecure as he was when it came to her own performance. "I didn't think I was good in the first film, and I was struggling with that," she revealed in a 2017 interview with Elle UK. Perhaps it had something to do with director JJ Abrams' criticism of her acting, as she originally told Glamour UK. "JJ [Abrams] ... he probably doesn't remember telling me that my performance was wooden ... I honestly wanted to die. I thought I was gonna cry, I couldn't breathe," Ridley said.
