How Many Grammy Records Has Beyonce Broken?
All hail Queen Bey! There are not many other musical artists whose achievements rival those of Beyoncé. From performing top-grossing stadium tours across the globe to putting out the world's fastest-selling album on iTunes, Beyoncé is used to breaking records. Even outside of her career, everything the singer does rises to the top. Her 2017 pregnancy announcement broke Instagram's record for most-liked photo, which was later beaten by singer Selena Gomez.
When it comes to the Grammys, Beyoncé is royalty. In 2021, Beyoncé celebrated winning over two dozen Grammy awards across her career — more than any other female artist. Upon winning best R&B performance for her song "Black Parade," Beyoncé opened up about the honor of breaking the historic record. "I believe it's my job and all of our jobs to reflect the times," Beyoncé said in her acceptance speech. "It has been such a difficult time so I wanted to uplift, encourage, and celebrate all of the beautiful Black queens and kings that continue to inspire me and inspire the whole world. This is so overwhelming." She continued, "I've been working for my whole life, since nine years old, and I can't believe this happened."
So, if Beyoncé is the reigning champ among the Recording Academy winners, how many Grammys records has Beyoncé broken?
Beyoncé wears the crown for most Grammys
Beyoncé is the most decorated woman in Grammys history. She wears the crown for both the most nominations and wins, with 79 noms and 28 trophies total. Many of Beyoncé's biggest hits earned her Grammy hardware, including songs "Single Ladies" and "Drunk In Love." According to Insider, when Beyoncé won four of her seven nominations in 2021, she dethroned Alison Krauss for most-ever wins by a woman.
That isn't the end of Beyoncé's Grammy firsts. Additionally, Beyoncé holds the throne for winning the most Grammy awards in a single night by a female artist, per the Recording Academy. The star cleaned house at the 2010 awards show for her record "I Am... Sasha Fierce" and took home a record-breaking six trophies in a single evening. Adele later tied this record, but the ladies have yet to be topped.
Beyoncé's eclectic album "Lemonade" also led her to become the first artist to be nominated at the Grammys across four different genres at the same time: pop, rock, rap-sung, and urban contemporary. "This is a first timer for us," Grammys Head of Awards Bill Freimuth told Complex in 2016 of Beyoncé's unique accomplishment, "and personally I think it's appropriate and pretty cool."
Beyoncé may soon earn even more awards
Though she has certainly lived a more private life in recent years, Beyoncé isn't going anywhere anytime soon — and neither is her success. Beyoncé is now competing against her husband Jay-Z for best original song at the 2022 Critics Choice Awards for their writing credits on two songs: Beyoncé for "Be Alive," from the film "King Richard," and Jay-Z for "Guns Go Bang," from the film "The Harder They Fall," Billboard reports. The noms make both artists' outlooks good for Oscars recognition, which would pit them against each other yet again.
As for new music, Beyoncé opened up about plans for a future release in a rare interview with Harper's Bazaar in August 2021. "I feel a renaissance emerging and I want to be a part of that escape in any way possible," she said in response to recent social injustices and the COVID-19 pandemic. "I've been in the studio for a year and a half. Sometimes it takes a year for me to personally search through thousands of sounds to find just the right kick or snare," Beyoncé explained, adding in confirmation, "Yes. The music is coming!"
