The Voice Season 22 Release Date, Cast, And More Information
It's hard to believe, but "The Voice" has been on air for ten years. In 2011, the singing competition premiered on NBC to rave reviews, as the format was unlike any other reality singing competition at the time. Contestants on "The Voice" were selected after they performed a blind audition, where the coaches only heard their voices. The coaches then picked the most captivating voices to advance in the competition.
The coaches, of course, have also been one of the show's major selling points. Blake Shelton, Christina Aguilera, Adam Levine, and CeeLo Green were the original coaches, but as of Season 21, the show has cycled through 15 full-time coaches, per Insider. Ariana Grande, Kelly Clarkson, John Legend, and Shelton — the only coach to have been a part of all seasons – made up the most recent panel. Grande's addition in particular was a hit on social media, with the singer's fans expressing their support over her new role, reports Good Housekeeping.
With Season 21 staying stable in the ratings, per TV Series Finale, it is likely that NBC will continue on with the show. Here's what we can expect from "The Voice" Season 22.
When will The Voice Season 22 return?
Since premiering in 2011, "The Voice" has become a staple on NBC, and has outperformed other singing competition shows — namely "American Idol," reports Deadline. Ratings, though, have been down in recent years, according to TV Series Finale. Dips are not uncommon for a show that's been on air for so long, though, and NBC doesn't seem too worried about it. NBC executive Frances Berwick told Deadline in May that although the show was going from airing two seasons a year to just one, fans of the show could breathe a sigh of relief. "'The Voice' remains one of the most popular shows on television and we want to keep it that way," she said. "We think 'The Voice' will be on NBC for a very long time to come and we believe the best way to protect the brand ... is to produce one amazing cycle this year."
Since "The Voice" will only be airing one cycle this year, fans will have to wait a full year — until Fall 2022 — for the next season. Monsters and Critics predicts new episodes will be released on September 19, but those dates still have to be confirmed, as does the renewal. Given that NBC has been coming up with bigger and better surprises for the show, though, "The Voice" looks to have a safe spot in the network's roster.
Who will be on The Voice Season 22?
"The Voice" has, in recent years, diversified its viewership by hiring coaches who appeal to different demographics. Ariana Grande joined the team in Season 21 and was credited for bringing a younger demographic to the show. Co-star and former music collaborator John Legend discussed Grande's influence in an interview with Entertainment Tonight in December, saying the pop star's presence "might have attracted some good talent to the show, and it's pretty evenly distributed throughout the teams." Legend praised Grande's debut and said she was wonderful to work with, while Kelly Clarkson told Jimmy Fallon on "The Tonight Show" that Grande's humor was what made her so likable. "She's so funny," Clarkson said. "Like, very witty."
With those praises, fans are hoping that Grande can stick around for another season — if not to annoy Blake Shelton some more. Grande is open to the idea, telling E! News' "Daily Pop" that she would like to return. "I can't wait to work together on whatever is next," Grande said. "Where it happens to be right and where we see fit, I am running back as soon as possible. If it's this group [of coaches], I'll be so happy."
While Grande has made her feelings clear, whether NBC will grant her wishes is something we'll have to wait to find out.
Will Blake Shelton return to The Voice in Season 22?
Big changes might be coming to "The Voice" for Season 22. Radar Online reports that NBC might be looking to replace longtime coach Blake Shelton after seeing how well-received Ariana Grande has been with viewers and contestants. "Current top ten artists like Justin Bieber, Lil Nas X, Billie Elish [sic], Olivia Rodrigo, and The Weeknd, were all hesitant about starring on a competition show before Ariana Grande signed on," a source told the outlet. Now a mega pop star has "opened the flood gates," which the source claimed may spell doom for Shelton. "Sure, he is a star and people love him," the source said, "but he doesn't exactly burn up the charts anymore."
If the report proves true, then Shelton might be forced to move on to new opportunities, like his frenemy Adam Levine, who left in Season 16. Producers of "The Voice" reportedly want to hire "someone younger and more current." However, NBC may not need to force Shelton out.
Shelton revealed to Hoda Kotb on "Today with Hoda & Jenna" in March that he'd like to live life and raise a family with Gwen Stefani in the near future. "I mean, we've both pretty much taken it to the limit as far as our careers go, and touring, and now the television thing," he said. "It's been fortunate to accomplish a lot of things, but hopefully, at some point, we get a chance to live some life."
