The Scare Heidi Klum Had On Germany's Next Top Model
Heidi Klum is one of the biggest television personalities in the U.S., thanks to her supermodel status and her name recognition. And while she's also known for hosting "Project Runway," "America's Got Talent," and "Making the Cut," Klum is also a household name back in her native Germany.
In fact, Klum told Marie Claire in an interview back in 2008 that she was proud of the fact that she came "from a place where we're not that shy about our bodies," after explaining that when she began her career in 1992, the "waif" look was in, thanks to supermodel Kate Moss. She explained, "It was not about being proud and upright with the smile glowing — a powerful woman. It was more about being a crushed, crumbled person in the corner, the beaten-down girl looking a little sad and tired."
With that said, it shouldn't come as a surprise that Klum went on to also host "Germany's Next Top Model." But in 2015, an incident happened on set that shook the model to the core.
Heidi Klum's on-set scare made international headlines
The 2015 finale for "Germany's Next Top Model" was canceled because of a bomb threat, according to NBC News. Over 8,500 attendees were evacuated from the SAP Arena in Mannheim, Germany. Thankfully, nothing happened — but host Heidi Klum did take to her Twitter account later that evening to write (per the outlet), "The evening did unfortunately not end the way I wished for! Safety comes first!" The BBC further reported that a suitcase was found on set and that a threat was made by a female caller, but no bomb was detected. Both Klum and her daughter Leni were promptly evacuated from the scene, nevertheless.
Despite what had happened that day, Klum has continued to host the show for more than 16 seasons. And even though her daughter was there during that frightening experience, Klum says that another "Germany's Next Top Model" episode that left her breathless had actually inspired Leni to pursue a career in modeling, just like her mother.
Heidi Klum might one day have her daughter Leni take over the show
In an interview with Elle, Heidi Klum's daughter Leni Klum said she was inspired to become a model herself during one particular episode of "Germany's Next Top Model." It was when the show's contestants were using a harness and participated in stunts for a Vogue Germany photoshoot. "I was like, 'Mom, I want to jump off the tower, too, and take a photo,'" Leni recalled. That moment turned out to be the start of something new for the aspiring teen model.
Fast forward several years later, and Leni is now walking the runway for couture designers like Dolce and Gabbana, as detailed in Page Six. Leni even told the publication that she was as cool as a cucumber for her first catwalk show. "I honestly wasn't that nervous," she revealed. "I sort of just winged it." If that weren't enough, Heidi even told People back in December 2020 that there's a good chance her daughter might take the reins from her in the future. She said, "Who knows, maybe in five years when I'm not hosting the show anymore, maybe it's going to be like 'Germany's Next Top Model' by Leni Klum instead of Heidi Klum. Who knows ... she's kind of playing with this idea." Now that's a model plan.
