This Is How Far Travis Scott Actually Got In School

It's impossible to talk about Travis Scott without acknowledging the massive black eye on his career — the Astroworld Festival tragedy. On November 5 and 6, the two-day music festival hosted by Scott ended in catastrophe after 10 people were killed and 300 were injured in a massive crowd crush. The ensuing chaos has been a portent of doom not only for the families involved but also for Scott's career.

The rapper's professional life has since taken a nosedive, resulting in numerous lawsuits hedged against the star — including a hefty multimillion-dollar one. But before the tragedy, Scott was primed as one of contemporary hip-hop's top acts. With tracks such as "BUTTERFLY EFFECT" and the widely-famous "SICKO MODE" featuring Drake, Scott had penetrated the upper echelon of the rap game. Not to mention his widely-discussed personal life with Kylie Jenner, with whom he shares 3-year-old Stormi and another baby on the way.

Of course, it wasn't an easy climb to the top for the rap superstar. Scratching and clawing his way for years, it took Scott a long time for him to reach the career heights he's ascended. In fact, the Houston-born musician almost took a completely different career route, as his education nearly guided him in another direction.

Travis Scott attended both private and public schools before college

Born Jacques Webster II, Travis Scott bounced between South Park, Houston, and Missouri City, a suburban enclave in Texas. "I used to stay with my grandma in the hood from ages one to six. My mom worked for Apple and my dad owned his own business. I lived in [Houston] most of my life until I was like 19," the rapper told Complex in 2012.

On school, he revealed he "went to private school in elementary and middle school, but then I went to public school in high school, man," adding that he "loved private school. It was like the freshest b*****s and all my homies were rich as f**k." The experience was certainly eye-opening for Scott, as it "showed me a whole other taste level of life" and learned that "s**t is way bigger than Houston."

The rapper "graduated early from high school" at 17, calling himself a "smart man" and "not a dumb**s." He would go on to attend the University of Texas, telling Complex in 2015 he "thought I wanted to do international business," but ultimately dropped out. Scott would use the money his mom provided him for school supplies on music equipment and jetting between New York and Los Angeles, where he would network with top industry executives and producers, per Rolling Stone.

Travis Scott comes from a highly-educated and musical family

Travis Scott wasn't the only educated one in his family. Father Jacques Webster (whom Scott earned his real name from), once had his own business and, in Scott's words, "has his master's in ... what's that s**t with politics ... political science," he joked (via Grantland). Scott also revealed that he and his father would often butt heads growing up, telling Complex in 2012, "Me and my dad used to have fist-fights in front of my friends. I was going hard for this [music] s**t." Scott noted that his dad was not a fan of his music endeavors. "My dad used to come in my room like, 'Turn that s**t off!'" the rapper stated. "Ripping my power out, just making beats die off — it was so many beats I had," he continued, adding, "I was so cold with my dad. It got to a point he was shutting off power in my room!"

Not only did education run through Scott's bloodline, but so did music. The rapper, a noted connoisseur of music theory, told the outlet that "my grandfather has his masters in music composition, he was a jazz composer" and that ironically, "My dad was a musician too, he played more like soul music." He further added that "[His] dad was a drummer and he plays the piano. That's where I get my whole music theory from, my pops and my grandfather."
