How Chrissy Metz Feels About This Is Us Coming To An End
Chrissy Metz knows landing the role of Kate Pearson on "This Is Us" drastically changed her life. After five seasons of dramatic twists and turns, fans are bracing for the series finale at the end of Season 6. Metz has big feelings about facing the end of this journey, but she also has plenty of excitement regarding what's ahead.
Metz's life now comes in stark contrast to her childhood in Florida, where her family struggled financially, as she told Glamour. She knew after high school she wanted to act, but getting started was a challenge. "I didn't know anybody with connections, I didn't come from money, I didn't go to Juilliard." Metz added, "But I never was afraid of the odds, even though they were seriously stacked against me." An open-call talent search gave her an opportunity, but Metz struggled to make it in Los Angeles for several years. "When I booked 'This Is Us,' I had 81 cents in my bank account," she recalled. "Getting the role of Kate has changed everything."
With "This Is Us" wrapping in 2022, Metz faces major life changes once again. Luckily, it seems she has plenty to look forward to still.
Chrissy Metz wants to 'relish' the final moments
Anticipating the end of "This Is Us" brought Chrissy Metz big emotions that "comes in waves," she told People. "I'll be sitting there about to put a scene up and I'm like, 'Oh, this is the last time that I might be doing this. Or the last time we're at this location," she explained. Metz noted she wants "to really enjoy and relish the moments that I do have as opposed to just crying through them." Sometimes she told herself the "This Is Us" story could go on forever and wasn't really ending.
Metz noted to TODAY in May that the "This Is Us" team had "banked a lot of footage throughout the seasons" to utilize for the series finale. Luckily, the cast knew Season 6 would be the show's last, and the writers always had a sense of how it would end. Metz admitted, "it's going to be really sad to see it go," but, "as we say, you want to go out with a bang and not a thud." Metz teased of her character Kate Pearson, "I think that she will be happy," according to Us Weekly.
As for how audiences will feel, she shared, "I think there'll be contentment." She added, "I think there will feel like a sense of closure and some bittersweet memories."
Chrissy Metz's career is still on the rise
(Warning: spoilers ahead) Chrissy Metz acknowledged there was a lot to cover in Season 6 of "This Is Us," explaining to Us Weekly, "We go back and forth in time. We're going to see all sorts [of timelines] – the five years in between what happened and who's this new dude." Viewers know Kate Pearson eventually marries Philip, her boss at the school for the visually impaired. Her marriage to Toby is over, but there was a five-year gap between Toby taking the job in San Francisco and Kate preparing to marry Philip. "I think we're going to see it all," Metz said of Kate's Season 6 journey.
The entertainer already has plenty lined up though, with Metz mentioning she is working on "Gorge," a movie based on the memoir written by Kara Richardson Whitely about climbing Mt. Kilimanjaro while weighing 300 pounds. Metz will continue to work on her music as well. Still, she holds some sadness. "I hope there's still plenty of opportunities, but I'm very, very sad to close the book on a really incredible, important chapter in my life," she admitted to TODAY.
Fans of "This Is Us" will be bummed to see it end too, although they'll likely readily admit it was better to have the journey than nothing at all.
