2017 Tonys: Dear Evan Hansen, The Great Comet Among Performers
A whopping nine musicals will hit the stage to perform at the 2017 Tony Awards, airing this Sunday, June 11, 2017, on CBS.
According to The Hollywood Reporter, all four of the shows nominated for Best Musical will perform individually, including the frontrunner, Dear Evan Hansen (9 nominations). The show, which stars the Drama League's Distinguished Performance Award winner and the favorite to win Best Actor in a Musical, Ben Platt, is expected to face fierce competition from the 9/11-themed musical Come From Away (7 nominations) and the Josh Groban-starring Natasha, Pierre & The Great Comet of 1812 in many of the night's top categories.
The fourth nominated show, Groundhog Day, is nominated for seven Tonys but is expected to go home with zero.
Meanwhile, viewers will also see performances from the three shows nominated for Best Revival of a Musical: Falsettos, starring Tony-nominated talents Christian Borle, Andrew Rannells, Brandon Uranowitz and Stephanie J. Block; Hello, Dolly!; and Miss Saigon. After much controversy, it is still unclear whether Bette Midler, nominated for Best Actress in a Musical for Hello, Dolly!, will perform with her show.
Rounding out the show performances are Bandstand and the Patti Lupone-Christine Ebersole vehicle War Paint.
THR adds that Leslie Odom Jr. and Cynthia Erivo, winners of the Best Actor in a Musical and Best Actress in a Musical Tonys in 2016, will also perform, as will the Radio City Music Hall Rockettes.
