Mary Kay Letourneau's Husband And Former Student Files For Separation
People magazine has confirmed that Vili Fualaau, the student who began having an affair with his 34-year-old teacher, Mary Kay Letourneau, when he was in the sixth grade, has filed for legal separation about 12 years after the couple infamously said "I do."
"They've been having issues for a while now," a source told People magazine. "They tried to work through them, but it didn't work. They're still committed to being good parents to their children."
According to People, the affair began in Seattle in 1996 when Fualaau was 12 and Letourneau was 34 and married with four children. Letourneau was later sentenced to seven and a half years in prison after pleading guilty to two counts of second-degree child rape. She was released from prison in August 2004; they married less than a year later.
The couple has two daughters, one of whom was born while Letourneau was still in prison.
According to TMZ, Letourneau has since filed a petition to have Fualaau's separation case dismissed.
