This Is Who Started Hugh Jackman And Ryan Reynolds' Feud
Underneath the glitzy, red carpet-ready facades, celebrities have their more human sides, too. In many cases, we see this through their public spats. From the infamous Kim Kardashian West-Taylor Swift saga, to Kanye West and Jay Z's contentious relationship, there is no shortage of A-lister arguments to keep us entertained. But for every time celebs launch serious barbs at each other, there are also plenty of instances where those disses are only meant in jest.
Known throughout Hollywood for his sense of humor, Ryan Reynolds is one such actor who's always quick with a well-meaning joke. Case in point: He prefers to show affection for his wife, Blake Lively, by trolling the heck out of her as much as possible. To commemorate Lively's birthday in 2017, Reynolds paid tribute on Instagram with a very strategically placed social crop. Then, in 2019, he wished his better half a happy birthday with a series of pictures (via Instagram) that showed her looking not-so-camera-ready. Judging by his relationship with Lively, it seems only par for the course that Reynolds cultivates fun-loving relationships with other celebs, including his pal and fellow actor Hugh Jackman. Per Us Weekly, the pair's friendly "feud" first bloomed on the set of 2009's "X-Men Origins: Wolverine," but who set the tone of their dynamic?
Was Scarlett Johansson the cause of Hugh Jackman and Ryan Reynolds' feud?
Hugh Jackman and Ryan Reynolds might joke around about being enemies, but it's apparent that the two of them are actually close friends. With that said, it was Jackman and Reynolds' ex-wife Scarlett Johansson who were friends initially... and Reynolds was brought into the fold as a result. "I met him back on 'Wolverine' and I used to ream him because I was very close friends with Scarlett [Johansson]," Jackman said in a 2020 interview with The Daily Beast. "Scarlett had just married Ryan, so when he came on set I was like, 'Hey you better be on your best behavior here pal, because I'm watching,' and we started ribbing each other that way."
Over the years, the pair have regularly pranked each other in everything from TV interviews to scathing social media posts. Following Reynolds' star role in the "Deadpool" movies, Jackman told The Daily Beast that things between them had "escalated" and that Reynolds frequently trolled him on social media. Back in 2017, when Jackman was promoting "Wolverine" overseas, Reynolds expressed his incredulity that the actor could have so many fans. In response to a tweet where Jackman wrote, "Thanks for an amazing visit Beijing!" Reynolds countered, "Pretty sure those are protestors." Ouch!
Where do Ryan Reynolds and Hugh Jackman stand today?
Perhaps because he got so tired of Ryan Reynolds pranking him, Hugh Jackman enlisted backup in 2018. With the help of his friend Jake Gyllenhaal, he successfully tricked Reynolds into believing that a holiday party was an ugly sweater party. "These a**holes told me it was a sweater party @RealHughJackman #JakeGyllenhaal," Reynolds tweeted alongside an image of him wearing a Christmas sweater with a gold bow. (Meanwhile, Jackman and Gyllenhaal were both in casual attire.) However, Jackman and Reynolds appeared to bury the hatchet the following year — but was their truce for real?
"Official truce with @realhughjackman!" Reynolds tweeted along with a picture of him clasping hands with Jackman. He continued, "As a gesture of goodwill, I'm gonna make a beautiful ad for his company, Laughing Man Coffee. Can't wait!" A video on Reynolds' YouTube channel then showed the thoughtful promo Reynolds created for Jackman's coffee company. But Jackman's version (created for Reynolds' Aviation gin) wasn't as friendly. "Ryan Reynolds is a complete and total f****** a**hole. Gin's pretty great though. I'll have to try it some day," the actor said, before opening a bottle and letting it spill on the table. He did apologize, copping to the fact he didn't think the truce was real, but it seems this duo's feud still rages on. For now, at least.
