How Donnie Wahlberg Tricked Jenny McCarthy On The Masked Singer
Jenny McCarthy and Donnie Wahlberg are one of the most famous celebrity couples out there today. He gained fame for being a member of New Kids on the Block and now works as an actor for CBS, and she got her start modeling for Playboy and currently judges Fox's "The Masked Singer." But the question of how well they know one another may be up for debate. Why? Because in May, Wahlberg was able to fool his wife into thinking he was not part of "The Masked Singer," when in reality, he was one of the celebrities belting it out behind the mask.
In a May interview with Entertainment Tonight, McCarthy said of failing to guess that her husband was on the show, "There are a lot of things that you have to put in place before you judge me." What are some of those things? And what was it that ultimately allowed Wahlberg to fool McCarthy?
Donnie Wahlberg lied about being in New York City during filming
On the subject of being fooled by her husband in an interview with Entertainment Tonight, Jenny McCarthy said, "First is he tricked me! He would actually FaceTime me from the 'Masked Singer' set dressed as [his 'Blue Bloods' character] Danny Raegan and say, 'I'm on set of 'Blue Bloods.'" McCarthy continued, "Then he posted on Instagram a picture of him in New York. So my brain is not thinking." As fans are well aware, Donnie Wahlberg has played the role of Danny Reagan on CBS' "Blue Bloods" — which films in New York City — since 2010.
"The Masked Singer," meanwhile, films at Red Studios Hollywood in Los Angeles, according to the Cinemaholic. In McCarthy's mind, if she thought her husband was on the east coast, it wouldn't have been possible for him to be part of "The Masked Singer." Perhaps, unsurprisingly, Wahlberg's schedule must have been extremely difficult to manage during his tenure on "The Masked Singer." According to Outsider, he typically films ten hours a day for "Blue Bloods" — he frequently films in New York City during the week and flies home to Chicago on the weekends.
Donnie Wahlberg danced differently on 'The Masked Singer' to trick Jenny McCarthy
One thing that kept Jenny McCarthy suspicious about the Cluedle-Doo's identity on "The Masked Singer" was the creature's dance moves. In an interview with Entertainment Tonight, Donnie Wahlberg shared, "l couldn't really move the way I like to move typically, on stage. Like, I did a little butt wiggle and got my hips going and stuff, but I had a little slight tear in my calf muscle from wearing those talons on my feet and tryna dance." He added that because of how cumbersome his costume was, the moves he showcased were not "quite the moves that [McCarthy] would recognize."
So, who did McCarthy guess was behind the mask? Akon. When it came time for the actor and model to defend her choice, she said, "There's a little bit of a tone [in his voice]! Also, when you're sitting in the panel seat, the ambience, they kind of change the sound a little bit so that way it's a little harder for us to guess." Wahlberg said that, while this was one of the best compliments he could receive, she was obviously off the mark.
In general, Wahlberg credited the couple's shooting schedule for helping him pull off the stunt. "We talk 24 hours a day, so when she was working and when I'm working, it gave me enough windows of time to sort of sneak around and do what I had to do," he told Entertainment Tonight.
