The Real Meaning Behind Adele's I Drink Wine

In anticipation for Adele's upcoming album "30" dropping on November 19, the British singer's "One Night Only" recorded concert at Los Angeles' Griffith Observatory aired on CBS on November 14 — causing the internet to be extremely excited to hear the full record. Along with big early hits like "Rolling in the Deep" and "Skyfall" performed with a live orchestra, Adele also teased four different songs from her next record including the first single "Easy On Me," "Hold On," and "Love Is a Game."

However, the one track that had fans most excited from Adele's 10-song setlist was her second single from "30" called "I Drink Wine." When the album's tracklist originally was revealed on Twitter, the song's title almost immediately garnered attention, as well as various jokes about it being a perfect fit for crying to Adele's music. Despite the grabby title, "I Drink Wine" has a lot more under the surface of its existence as a song that fans are still learning about.

Adele's I Drink Wine helped her lighten her emotions

During the December cover story for Rolling Stone, Adele opened up about everything from her love life to her plans connected to her upcoming album "30." In the piece, Adele also discusses the real meaning behind the viral song title "I Drink Wine." A heavy theme on the album is Adele grappling with her divorce from Simon Konecki, with whom she shares a son from 2012, Angelo.

"I took everything so personally at that period of time in my life, so the lyric 'I hope I learn to get over myself' is like 'Once I've done that, then maybe I can let you love me'," Adele said. "It made it less intimidating, because some of the things I'm talking about really hit home for a lot of people."

In addition to Adele's live performance of "I Drink Wine" during her concert airing, Adele also sat down with Oprah for an interview. "From a very young age I promised myself that when I had kids that we'd stay together and we would be that united family and I tried for a really, really long time. I was so disappointed for my son. I was so disappointed for myself," she said.

Adele does drink wine, though

Adele's new song "I Drink Wine" isn't exactly about drinking wine, but rather asking thought-provoking questions to herself about life to wind up where she is. "Why am I obsessing about the things I can't control? / Why am I seeking approval from people I don't even know?" she sings on the second verse, according to Genius, before continuing to try to be better by the closing lyrics.

However, the singer does still like to indulge every now and again. In a profile with Vogue from October 2021, connected to her cover photoshoot, Adele started off by jokingly discussing the role drinking played in the pandemic for her. Specifically, in terms of wine, she shares her favorite rosé and behind-the-scenes experiences with it.

"I'm always a bit hungover on Monday morning ... It got earlier and earlier, the drinking," Adele said. "My first emergency run at the grocery store was for Whispering Angel and ketchup. Whispering Angel turned me into a barking dog. It did not make me whisper."
