The Truth About Shanna Moakler's Relationship History
American model and former reality television star Shanna Moakler's relevance resurged in 2021 thanks to her ex-husband Travis Barker's very, um, affectionate relationship with a member of a very famous family (if you don't know who we're talking about, more on that later).
A Rhode Island native, Moakler initially caught the public's attention through pageantry, entering competitions in the Miss USA circuit, and eventually snagging the title, per her website. The beauty queen has been featured in popular magazines like Maxim, Cosmopolitan, and Playboy, the last of which once gave her the coveted title of Playmate of the Month.
Back in the mid-aughts, before her ex-husband's personal life catapulted her back into the spotlight, Shanna Moakler was part of the pop culture conversation, appearing in gossip magazines and on red carpets. By her side on those red carpets? A string of men who may lead you to wonder what exactly her type is. Who are these men, you ask? Let's get into it.
Shanna Moakler once dated Billy Idol
In an interview with ESPN, Shanna Moakler revealed she once dated none other than British rockstar Billy Idol. She told the outlet of their relationship, "No, he's not too sweet and sensitive. But he's a gentleman." Moakler also remarked about Idol's intelligence and "mind for history," and noted she's into accents.
Dating a rockstar has to come with perks, and one of those for Moakler was a small role on "The Wedding Singer." Idol had a cameo in the film and appeared in a scene alongside Moakler. She said of the gig to ET, "It was my first acting experience, but I'm very thankful for it."
Moakler's acting career didn't end with "The Wedding Singer." She's also landed parts in a number of other movies, as well as television shows like "Pacific Blue," "Joey," "CSI: Crime Scene Investigation," and "The Goldbergs." Moakler told Celebrity Baby Scoop (via Oh No They Didn't!), "I have dreams of being seen as a serious actress and not as someone played out in the tabloids." Alas, those dreams did not exactly go according to plan.
Inside her relationship with Oscar De La Hoya
One of Shanna Moakler's most serious relationships was with professional boxer Oscar De La Hoya. The two were engaged for a period of time and share a child together. According to Moakler, their relationship was solid until he appeared at the Latin Grammys with someone else as his date. She told ESPN, "I was devastated. I had no idea there were any real problems in the relationship until that point." Their engagement didn't end well, as she added, "the way he handled the situation with me and our kid was in poor taste and really kind of mean."
Moakler went on to sue the boxer for palimony, as reported by People. De La Hoya went on to marry the woman he took to the Latin Grammys, singer Millie Corretjer, and welcomed three children with her.
De La Hoya and Moakler reunited in 2017 to celebrate their daughter's high school graduation, as reported by AOL. Evidently, the two are way past their relationship drama and have been able to stay chummy all these years later. In April 2021, a source told ET that the two were seen "looking happy together" while they were out at dinner one evening. Moakler told the same outlet that she and De La Hoya are "really good friends" and "super close."
Shanna Moakler's other random relationships
Shanna Moakler is not one to shy away from getting involved with other public figures. She dated "The Parent Trap" star Dennis Quaid for a time, as well as New Kids on the Block's Jordan Knight, and "Baywatch" actor David Charvet.
Moakler dished more on the history of her love life to ESPN, noting, "What I've seen from my own situation and from girlfriends who have also dated athletes is there's definitely a spoiled-kid attitude going on there." She added, "I've dated other celebrities, but they're cheesy." Despite considering them cheesy, Moakler has continued dating celebrities, and even went on to marry one.
Although not everything in her personal life has been picturesque, Moakler has remained hopeful she'll find true love. "I would love to have a marriage like my parents, who have been together for a very long time," she told People in 2008. "I don't know what the future is going to bring, but I am hopeful for what's to come."
The beginning of her relationship with Travis Barker
Shanna Moakler's most famous — and now infamous — relationship was with Blink-182 drummer Travis Barker. The two got engaged at Disneyland's Haunted Mansion ride and wed on Halloween Eve, per People. Moakler and Travis also welcomed two kids, Alabama and Landon Barker.
A portion of Moakler and Travis' marriage was filmed for their reality show "Meet the Barkers," which aired on MTV back when MTV's lineup included more than just Rob Dyrdek and company (whom do we have to talk to at MTV to get a "Making the Video" reboot? Or every season of "The Real World"?). The show documented Moakler and Barker's relationship and life with their children. Both halves of the then-couple were nominated at the Teen Choice Awards for their parts on the unscripted series.
"Meet the Barkers" was short-lived, only on for two seasons. Apparently, the 14-episode series was not exactly a huge boon to Moakler and Travis' relationship. As the drummer wrote in his book "Can I Say," "It was turning into a variety show instead of a reality show — and in my mind, she was behaving out of character on camera, which was carrying over to her not being genuine with me."
The end of Shanna Moakler and Travis Barker's marriage
Sadly, like so many beloved reality show couples, Shanna Moakler and Travis Barker split, and said split was... messy. With all the breakups and reconciliations, it's nearly impossible to get the timeline right, and there are far too many details to mention in a paragraph or two, but the end of Moakler and Barker's relationship was marked by cheating accusations, police involvement, and alleged altercations with famed socialites.
Perhaps the most tragic detail in Moakler and Barker's end-of-relationship saga was a deadly plane crash while Barker was aboard. Two people, Barker and DJ AM, survived, while four others were killed, per People. Barker was badly injured, and Moakler stood by him while he recovered, prolonging their inevitable divorce.
Not long after the horrific plane crash, Moakler and Barker's divorce was finalized, but the two remained living in the same house to co-parent. (Yes, you read that correctly. The exes remained living in the same house.) The two co-parented amicably for a time, but it turned into a contentious legal battle with both fighting for custody of their children. Barker told the courts that a "distinct contrast in our parenting beliefs was a major reason for our breakup," as reported by Us Weekly.
Tension with Travis Barker
In early 2021, Us Weekly confirmed that Travis Barker was linked to Kourtney Kardashian, known for being part of one of the world's most famous families and whose life was documented for 20 seasons on "Keeping Up with the Kardashians." If you've followed their relationship closely — heck, even if you haven't — you know it's been partially defined by their very public displays of affection, much of which they've posted to Instagram.
Shortly after Barker and Kardashian began dating, Shanna Moakler said in Us Weekly, "As long as she's great to my kids and they're both happy, I'm happy for them." Her goodwill didn't seem to last long, though, as she liked negative Instagram comments regarding Barker and Kardashian, and claimed Barker had an affair with Kardashian's sister Kim Kardashian West, resulting in the end of their marriage, per Us Weekly. Moakler said to TMZ, "My family is broken because of [the Kardashians]," leading fans to believe her happiness for the couple had dissipated.
In October 2021, less than a year after their relationship began, Kourtney Kardashian and Travis Barker announced their engagement, seemingly to the dismay of Moakler. Per Us Weekly, Moakler posted cryptic messages to her Instagram Stories — such as "Temporarily closed for spiritual maintenance" — leading sleuths to assume they were in regards to the proposal. When Page Six asked her about Kravis' engagement, she maintained she was "super happy" for them and joked, "I hope they get good ratings."
Inside Shanna Moakler's other relationships
After her split with Travis Barker, TMZ reported Shanna Moakler began dating Hells Angels member Bryan Sollima. Like many of her relationships, Moakler's time dating Sollima was shrouded in controversy. Moakler and Sollima were together at the time of her custody battle with Barker, and as a source claimed to TMZ, she apparently worried Barker would use Sollima's association with the biker gang to her detriment in their legal proceedings. Moakler's relationship with Barker only grew more complicated while she dated Sollima, as the exes were reportedly arrested for making death threats against the other. (According to TMZ, they didn't press charges against each other.)
Years later, Moakler got into an on-again, off-again relationship with actor Matthew Rondeau. The two first linked up in 2020 and have gone through some ups and downs in the public eye. After breaking up in the summer of 2021, Rondeau told Page Six that he and Moakler had worked things out. "I admit...at the time.. things were very difficult especially in our personal lives, which made things hard to focus on one another," he told the outlet in October 2021. "However, Shanna and I have truly found what we needed more of and what was missing just to focus on the fun in life with one another and not letting anyone or anything take that away from us."
Shanna Moakler's personal life stays complicated
Her on-and-off relationship with Matthew Rondeau isn't the only source of drama in Shanna Moakler's life. Her feelings regarding Travis Barker and Kourtney Kardashian have permeated into her dynamic with her children, as has her relationship with Rondeau.
Matthew Rondeau told Life & Style that Moakler is "an amazing mother" who "loves and cares so much about her family," but her children have told a different story. The two kids she shares with Travis have taken to social media to share their thoughts on their mother, per Life & Style, both stating Moakler and Travis are in their lives in a different capacity. Unsurprisingly, this has taken a toll on the model. She told Life & Style, "I think it's heartbreaking when your kids go public and make accusations that aren't true." Although she's been at odds with her children, she's defended Rondeau: "[The kids have] been really not nice to him, as well, and he hasn't done anything except be really supportive to me."
Moakler's issues with Alabama and Landon Barker have been all over social media, including the time when, as BuzzFeed pointed out, Moakler deleted photos of her children from her Instagram page in the wake of the Kravis engagement news. However, in November 2021, Moakler shared an Instagram Story (via Us Weekly) she took with Landon, indicating they were in a better place.
