Another musician that has been very open about their admiration for Carey is Brazilian singer Anitta. In 2019, the "Girl in Rio" hitmaker told Entertainment Tonight that Carey heavily influenced her album "Kisses" and how she was first introduced to the icon. "I grew up listening to Mariah Carey. She's my No. 1. She taught me how to sing, she was the first person I ever listened to in my life," Anitta revealed, adding, "My aunts are crazy about Mariah, so she was the first singer I listened to when I was, I don't know, one or two years old maybe. I was always crazy about music."
That same year, Anitta took to Instagram to show off her music collection of Carey and reminisced over the time she wanted to go see her in concert. "When she came to Brazil, we didn't have money to go see. I remember me listening to her concert on the radio crying cuz I wasn't there," she explained. According to Hola, Carey replied and thanked Anitta for supporting her. Fast-forward to 2021 and the pair has developed a wholesome friendship. Keep reading to find out how they met.
Anitta bumped into Mariah Carey while shopping
During an appearance on "The Late Late Show with James Corden" with collaborator Saweetie, the trio bonded over their love for the legendary Mariah Carey. Anitta explained that her first meeting with her idol was totally out of the blue. The "Me Gusta" singer revealed that she was shopping one day and bumped into Carey in the same exact store in Aspen during Christmas time. Anitta admitted she was "frozen" during the moment and even started to cry. Carey recognized Anitta and the pair engaged in a conversation with one another.
They say never to meet your idols, but in this case, it was totally worth it for the Brazilian star. Anitta told James Corden she and Carey talk all the time and have "crazy calls for hours and hours," admitting that she "can't believe it." Fortunately for fans, the video has been shared on social media, which perfectly documents the incredible moment. Anitta appears lost for words while Carey looks happy to be in her company while holding her hand. If this doesn't scream friendship goals, then nothing will.
