Megan Fox And Machine Gun Kelly's Full Relationship Timeline
The following article references suicide and addiction.
Unless you are averse to social media and don't pay celebrity news any mind, you are well aware that Megan Fox and Machine Gun Kelly are an item. For one thing, we got the "I am weed" meme out of it, so hey, something for everyone. The couple has been a huge talking point at red carpets, and before America's GQ headquarters could do a sensational feature on the pair, British GQ ran a spread that included a photo of Fox pointing a gun at MGK's head.
At the risk of sounding crass, the pairing has been good for both parties in terms of careers, too. Fox disappeared from the public eye for almost a decade and her return, with Kelly by her side, has been huge. For the rapper slash punk rocker, the exposure from the relationship has been monumental as well as creatively generative. He released his fifth studio album, "Tickets to My Downfall," in September 2020, and shortly after, announced that his sixth studio album, "Born With Horns," would be coming out in 2022, per Billboard. It seems like they both function as muse for the other.
While they're both on top of their game at the moment, it might be fun to pause and look at the history of their whirlwind romance, back to its very beginning. Here's the full story of Fox and Kelly's relationship.
Megan Fox and MGK's first encounter
The common story is that Megan Fox and Machine Gun Kelly first crossed paths in 2020 on the set of "Midnight in the Switchgrass." This, however, is not the full truth. In their joint interview with British GQ, Fox and Kelly explained that they met each other years before in Los Angeles at a party hosted by GQ, but this first interaction was something of a blur. "This weird thing happened," Fox explained. "We didn't see each other."
They both told the outlet that they have no memory of seeing the other's face, but they recall being around each other. Describing MGK as a "tall, blond, ghostly creature," Fox remembers telling him, "You smell like weed." And his response immediately became the stuff of legend: "He looked down at me and he was like, 'I am weed.'" And with that, the musician, "disappeared like a ninja in a smoke bomb." Talk about a love story origin story for the ages.
For Fox, the fact that neither she nor Kelly could register the other's face had a much deeper meaning, sharing that she believed they "weren't allowed to see each other yet." Fox said to Kelly: "Thank God, [because] what torture had I known you were there and I couldn't get to you. It was better that I didn't know."
Love in the Switchgrass
While neither could see each other's face before, Megan Fox and Machine Gun Kelly did finally see each other fully in 2020 on the set of "Midnight in the Switchgrass." The film itself scored abysmally in viewer and critic opinions alike: It earned an 8% on Rotten Tomatoes and a 20% from the audience. But fans were lured by the evident chemistry between Kelly and Fox. "The scenes between Kelly and Fox are some of the more intriguing in an otherwise subpar spin on a catch-the-killer mystery," one critic wrote in the Cambridge Day.
While the film ain't getting any Oscars, it did pave the way for Fox and Kelly to truly connect. They told British GQ that things took off right away. "It was obvious from second one what it was going to be," said Fox of her romance with Kelly, "but we didn't hook up right away." Kelly shared his side of the beginning. "She was just like, 'How are you feeling?' he said of Fox, "And I said, 'I'm lost.' She said, 'Well, let's find you.' That was the first real conversation we had."
Due to the coronavirus pandemic, production on the film stalled temporarily but since the connection had been forged, the delay gave Fox and Kelly time to delve deeper. An inside source told E! News, "They've been hanging out a lot since their movie was shut down. The down time has been good for them... They are intrigued by each other and having a lot of fun."
They've been in other relationships
Before she connected with Machine Gun Kelly, Megan Fox was with Brian Austin Green. The duo had been together for 15 years, married for 10, and share three children. But it wasn't like Machine Gun Kelly came in as a home wrecker. Fox and Green had been on the rocks for a while and even split up for a time before.
On a May 2020 episode of his podcast "... with Brian Austin Green," Green said that his relationship with Fox felt off when she returned from a five-week-long gig. "She said, 'I realized while I was out of the country working alone that I feel more like myself and I liked myself better during that experience and I think that might be something worth trying for me,'" he recalled. "I was shocked and I was upset about it but I can't be upset at her because she didn't ask to feel that way." They decided to separate. The "Beverly Hills, 90210" alum said there will always be love there and that there was no substance to infidelity rumors.
On the flip side, influencer Sommer Ray alleged to Us Weekly that ex-boyfriend MGK cheated on her with Fox. Whatever did or didn't happen, Ray wishes them well. "I think they're a cute couple," she said. "I'm not mad about it. I want them [to have] the best."
Megan Fox appeared in an MGK music video
On May 20, 2020, Machine Gun Kelly released "Bloody Valentine," a music video that features Megan Fox. In it, she ties up Kelly, duct tapes his mouth, and steps on his face.
There's a reason for this specific moment: he loves Fox's feet. "It's no secret. I think feet are beautiful. I think Megan has the most beautiful feet that exist," he told Teen Vogue in July 2020. Proving just how deep their connection runs, Fox suspected MGK would want to feature them in the visuals for "Bloody Valentine," and she prepared accordingly. "I was like, 'Megan, you already know what I'm about to ask you,' and she was like, 'Yea, I literally got a pedicure just because I knew you were going to ask me that,'" he recalled. A year later, fans learned the release of "Bloody Valentine" was a special time for the couple for another reason. On May 25, 2021, Kelly tweeted, "[S]he said 'i love you' one year ago today." This means that Fox said the words five days after the music video, when their relationship had yet to be confirmed to the rest of the world.
For all this positivity, the music video has one not-so-silver lining. Sommer Ray told Us Weekly that her then-boyfriend told her not to come to the set of "Bloody Valentine" while he was filming with Fox because of coronavirus restrictions. Eesh.
MGK is 'in love for the first time'
While we all saw it coming, Megan Fox and Machine Gun Kelly became official in June 2020. Kelly announced on Twitter: "'i'm calling you girlfriend, what the f***.' life imitated art on that one." Kelly followed this with a knife and heart emoji.
Us Weekly confirmed the news. "Megan and MGK have gotten more serious and are officially dating and referring to one another as boyfriend and girlfriend," a source told the publication. "They're enjoying spending more and more time together and have a strong connection."
In the same month, Fox spoke with "Fox 5 New York" and shared her favorite nicknames for Kelly. "I call him 'cookie,' I call him 'buddha,' I call him 'booby'. There's lots of names," she said (via The Buffalo News). While Fox has terms of endearment for days, Kelly had his own chance to gush about the relationship while on "The Howard Stern Show." MGK said, "I didn't know what [love] was until me and her made eye contact. That's when I was like, 'Whoa.'" Kelly also opened up about making his album "Tickets to My Downfall" and how his relationship impacted both his art and life. "After I made the big chunk of the album, I did fall in love for the first time," Kelly said. "That was my first experience with being open to love and stuff like that. I definitely wasn't set up to believe that that's something that could ever exist."
MGK's friends felt 'overly cautious'
Despite everything moving ahead seemingly perfectly for Megan Fox and Machine Gun Kelly, there was one slight hiccup and it came from Kelly's pals. Considering Fox was freshly off of her marriage to Brian Austin Green, Kelly's pals were worried the she and the musician might be on different pages when they first got together.
MGK's "inner circle was understandably overly cautious when he first showed interest in Megan, only because they didn't want him to get hurt," an inside source told Hollywood Life in July 2020. "They knew Megan just got out of a serious relationship and they wanted to make sure he took his time with things. But it's obvious he's fallen for her and they have a solid connection." That said, the tipster said it was quite evident to Kelly's friends that Fox wasn't using this as a breakup distraction. "There's no way this is a rebound for Megan," they clarified. "They have genuine chemistry and it's obvious to everybody. They're absolutely adorable together and it's great to see him so happy."
Kelly's buddies were right about how incredibly serious he is about his relationship with Fox. A source told Us Weekly that MGK feels lucky to be dating her. "He thinks she is a total bombshell in every way and basically worships the ground she walks on," they said, adding that he would "marry her in a heartbeat."
Megan Fox found her twin flame
Things took an even more serious turn when Megan Fox and Machine Gun Kelly had their first ever interview together in July 2020. On an episode of the podcast "Give Them Lala ... With Randall," the dynamic duo talked about the beginnings of their oh-so fiery and piping hot courtship.
When discussing her relationship, Fox began by saying that she had an inkling about what the future held the moment she heard that Kelly had been cast in "Midnight in the Switchgrass." "I could feel that some wild s**t was going to happen to me from that meeting, but I wasn't yet sure what. I just felt it like, deep in my soul — that something was going to come from that," Fox said, going on to describe him as "a twin flame," which, as she put it, "is actually where a soul has ascended into a high enough level that it can be split into two different bodies at the same time." She sensed such a strong connection that she felt compelled to tell him about this, and he was like a moth to a... flame.
In a July 2021 Washington Post interview, Fox reflected on her "magical" bond with MGK, noting that she "wasn't expecting it'd be like, 'God, you are my soul mate,' instantly." Evidently, it was like that; the twin flames burn bright.
Making things Instagram official
With baby talk and twin flames in their horizon, it wasn't terribly surprising when Megan Fox and Machine Gun Kelly made it real on IG. While Kelly had already poured his heart out on Twitter, his Instagram official post came on July 28, 2020. He shared a black and white photo of himself and Fox sticking their tongues out and wrote, "[W]aited for eternity to find you again." He added that same emoji theme of knives and hearts.
For Fox, her first Instagram post with Kelly came that August. Her post was also black and white and featured both of them in towels. "Achingly Beautiful Boy... My heart is yours," she wrote alongside the knives with a black heart emoji.
The more sinister element of knives seems to be a running theme in their romance. In their aforementioned interview with British GQ, they shared their favorite movies to watch together, a list that includes "Point Break" and "True Romance." When the latter film was mentioned, Kelly said, "I love a dark fairy tale." They certainly seem to be living their own dark fairy tale.
There's only one set of toes for MGK
It's not just knives and gothic love stories that come up as recurring themes in Megan Fox and Machine Gun Kelly's relationship. Feet seem to be a fixture, too. We saw this, of course, with Kelly's "Bloody Valentine" music video where he wanted Fox to step on his face. But that would not be the only example.
When MGK appeared on BuzzFeed Celeb in August 2020 to read thirst tweets, he addressed one fan's proclamation that they'd "let machine gun kelly suck my toes maybe." His response: "I'm only sucking one pair of toes." Got it, fans? It's Fox's toes and no others!
Oh, but the thirst didn't stop there. When one Twitter user asked him out on a date, he replied, "I'm locked in already right now. No dates for me, probably ever." And when another said they'd break their own arm if MGK asked them to, he did not bristle. Instead, he said, "I'm actually down with that mentality. I kind of like someone who's down to die for love." Hey, what else would you expect from someone who loves to live in a dark fairy tale?
They met each other's kids
Another major milestone for the couple came when Machine Gun Kelly and Megan Fox were introduced to each other's kids. Fox has three children with her ex-husband, Brian Austin Green: Bodhi, Noah, and Journey. Meanwhile, Kelly shares daughter Casie Colton Baker with ex Emma Cannon.
In September 2020, Us Weekly reported that Kelly had indeed gotten to know his girlfriend's children. "MGK has met Megan's kids, but Brian is pretty protective of them," the insider said. "Megan and Brian's relationship is so up and down. They have been coparenting in a healthy way as best as they can."
Fox met MGK's daughter a few months before he met her kids. Hollywood Life reported that the three of them were spotted in June 2020 out and about in Venice, California. Noting their "deep emotional connection," a source told the outlet, "She has blended so well into his life. His friends love her. She gets along great with his daughter. Even though things between them moved really fast, this isn't a case of something that is just lust." Needless to say, they aren't kidding around about this relationship.
Engagement rumors and blood vials
With such an intense relationship brewing between Megan Fox and Machine Gun Kelly, it's no huge surprise that engagement rumors began circulating. This kicked off in January 2021, when Fox and Kelly visited New York, where people noticed a ring on her engagement finger, per Us Weekly. In response to the buzz that arose, Fox later jumped on Instagram stories wearing a ring with "F*** you" written on it, so clearly she put a stop to the talk.
The pair did, however, share some other jewelry that had unquestionable significance. On a May 2021 episode of "The Ellen DeGeneres Show," the chat show host asked Kelly about his very Angelina Jolie and Billy Bob Thorton-esque necklace he has which holds Fox's blood. "Well, she was actually going out of town to film a movie. This was really new in our relationship," MGK explained. "I didn't have a passport either. So, she was going out to Bulgaria so I was kind of freaking out, like, 'You're gonna leave and I can't even come see you.'"
"Some people give a handkerchief to their partner, or whatever. She gave me her DNA," Kelly said, showing DeGeneres the glass vial. MGK did eventually obtain a passport with the help of Senator Bernie Sanders. "I made it to Bulgaria," he said.
MGK and Megan Fox's fearsome foursome
While Machine Gun Kelly and Megan Fox have become a headline-grabbing couple, so have Travis Barker and Kourtney Kardashian. To make things even better, the foursome has been spotted all over the place going on double dates. How did this happy connection begin?
Turns out, Barker and Kelly are pals and collaborators. During a May 2020 iHeart Radio appearance, MGK talked about making "Tickets to my Downfall" with the Blink-182 drummer. "We've been great friends for a decade," Kelly said. "So this was just like, 'Hey, let's just do a random day of work.'" That "random day" turned into a lot of days of work. "It was so powerful that Travis was like, 'F*** it, I'm blocking off two months of my life and we're doing this album.'" On top of that, the two frequently perform together and Barker is a producer on Kelly's followup album, "Born with Horns." But wait, there's more: Barker shared on Instagram that the pair got matching tattoos of the album title.
Since the two men are close, it's not surprising that Fox and Kourtney have bonded. The four of them were seen at a UFC fight in Las Vegas in March 2021. Shortly after, Fox and Kourtney modeled for Kim Kardashian's shapewear line, Skims, together. But that's not the end of this ultimate quartet.
The 'future baby daddies' hit the VMAs
When Kourtney Kardashian and Megan Fox introduced Machine Gun Kelly and Travis Barker at the MTV VMAs in September 2021, they used their allotted time to spark a frenzy. As People recapped, Fox told the audience she's "a huge fan" of MGK, adding that she's "watched him grow, and not just as an artist, but also as a person." Aw, that's sweet. Kardashian chimed in to share that she's attracted to Barker, who was drumming for MGK. (We had a feeling she felt that way.) And then, Fox upped the ante and got tongues wagging: "New York, I need you to get extra loud for our future baby daddies."
While this wasn't any sort of announcement, it sure suggested babies were on the brain. After all, just a few months before the VMAs, a source did tell ET, "MGK would love to start a family with Megan someday, but right now doesn't seem to be the time in terms of scheduling."
ET's tipster added, "As far as engagement goes, it is likely that this will happen sooner than later and it has been a topic of conversation without question. Their schedules are starting to get super busy again, so they just want to make sure that the timing is right since it would be a big step for both them and their families." Meanwhile, Kardashian and Barker have taken a big step of their own: The couple got married in 2022.
They made their love permanent
For tattoo lovers — which both Megan Fox and Machine Gun Kelly are — inking one another is both a commitment and a trust exercise. In their revelatory British GQ interview, writer Molly Lambert shared that she held her cell phone's flashlight over Fox and Kelly as they tattooed "The darkest fairytale" on each other's bodies right then and there.
While Fox was worried she "f***ed it up," MGK's analysis indicated otherwise: "F***ing best tattoo I've ever seen in my life." It's not so much the tattoos but the over-the-top level of romance between them, evidenced by the body art — but also by the blood necklace and their lively social media updates about finding each other. While there might be the temptation to get cynical about it, maybe there's really something to celebrate there. Why not put intense love on display? Especially a love that seems to pull into such a spiritual connection.
Speaking with CR Fashion Book in October 2021 about MGK, Fox said, "I think part of that comes naturally because our relationship is so karmic that our spirit, our souls, are so intertwined on that higher plane, a lot of it is handled for us by our ancestors and the spirits and energies that are watching over us." That sounds like something worth fighting for.
Megan Fox and MGK's engagement and controversial ring
Meghan Fox and Machine Gun Kelly got engaged on January 11, 2022, after dating for a year and a half. The two reminisced on social media about the location, a special banyan tree where they spent their first date. "Somehow a year and a half later, having walked through hell together, and having laughed more than I ever imagined possible, he asked me to marry him," Fox wrote in a since-deleted post on Instagram. "And just as in every lifetime before this one, and as in every lifetime that will follow it, I said yes...and then we drank each other's blood."
Kelly wrote on Instagram, "yes, in this life and every life," followed by a ring emoji. "[Beneath] the same branches we fell in love under, i brought her back to ask her to marry me." Kelly then described the engagement ring he gave Fox, which he designed with Stephen Webster. He made it using an emerald, for Fox's birthstone, and a diamond, which is his birthstone, that's joined magnetically and surrounded by thorns. The ring actually sparked debate online, because the thorns would cause pain, should Fox ever try to take it off. The element of pain seemed very on-brand for the couple — just look at Fox's comment about drinking each other's blood after the proposal — yet the potentially punitive design of the ring it also made many uncomfortable.
Megan Fox sought a girlfriend and created a lot of confusion
Megan Fox sparked a ton of confusion online when she wrote that she was "[currently] seeking a girlfriend," in a since-deleted post, uploaded on December 30, 2022. "Please submit applications in the DMs," she added. Fox has openly shared that she's bisexual in the past, and her post inspired a whirlwind of conspiracies that she had broken up with Machine Gun Kelly. However, he put any speculation to rest when he chimed in on the post. "I don't think you have the filing capacity for this request," he commented. He wasn't wrong. The post was literally flooded with applicants, speaking to Fox's appeal with pretty much everyone.
This wasn't the first time that they had sparked breakup rumors, though. They had a social media lag in the summer of 2022, where neither was posting anything with the other, so people began speculating that there were problems. However, TMZ spotted them walking together in Brentwood, California, in mid August of that year, and so the frenzy quelled for a bit as they appeared to be happy and connected.
MGK talked about his suicide attempt
Machine Gun Kelly's father died in 2020 and in his Hulu documentary, "Life in Pink," he spoke about the dark spell brought on by the grief. He explained that after he cleaned out his dad's apartment, he really started to struggle. At the time, Megan Fox was out of the country on location. "Like I kept getting paranoid that someone was gonna come and kill me," Kelly recalled (via People). "I would always sleep with a shotgun next to my bed, and like, one of the days, I just f***ing snapped."
He said that he called Fox on the phone and hit his worst moment. "I'm in my room and I'm like freaking out on her and dude, I put the shotgun in my mouth and I'm yelling on the phone and like the barrel's in my mouth," he said. "I go to cock the shotgun and the bullet as it comes back up, the shell just gets jammed. Megan's like dead silent." During the documentary, Kelly went on to say that Fox and his daughter, Casie Colson Baker, came to him and shared their concern. Kelly, who has been open about his struggles with addiction in the past, shared that in that moment, he recognized he needed to make a signifiant life change. "I was like, 'I need to kick the drugs for real this time,'" he said.

Megan Fox posted cryptic message on Instagram
Things appeared to take a turn in February 2023. Over Super Bowl weekend, Megan Fox shared some solo photos on Instagram and shared a lyric from Beyoncé's "Pray You Catch Me": "You can taste the dishonesty it's all over your breath." She also posted a video of a letter burning in a fire and then deleted all the photos of Machine Gun Kelly from her feed. There were some concerns about the aforementioned selfies. In them, Fox posed in front of a domestic violence PSA poster that read, "When you can't walk away."
The "Transformers" actor also stopped following everyone except Harry Styles, Timothée Chalamet, and Eminem, MGK's nemesis. Shortly after, she deleted her Instagram entirely. As one might imagine, Twitter pretty much blew a fuze with the amount of speculation as to the longevity of their engagement. There was also considerable rage directed at Kelly for his perceived infidelity, though that has not been confirmed.
A source then told People that they didn't call off their engagement but Fox did remove her ring after a bad fight. On February 13, 2023, they were photographed leaving a building with several couples counseling offices, per the Daily Mail, causing speculation that they were working things out. However, they left in two separate vehicles. On Valentine's Day, Page Six reported they were spotted together in the same vehicle. Whether they're able to fully reconcile will be revealed in time, but this seems to be a big bump in the road.
