Where Does Ron Howard Live And How Big Is His House?

Ron Howard has had a career unlike any other. He first became well-known as a child actor in "The Andy Griffith Show" sitcom as the star's son. He also played the adorable little Winthrop in the 1962 film adaptation of "The Music Man." Howard then grew up on the screen as Richie Cunningham in the sitcom "Happy Days" alongside Henry Winkler as Arthur "The Fonz" Fonzarelli. Following his many years on television, Howard transitioned more into directing with hits like "Apollo 13" and "Solo: A Star Wars Story." For his film "A Beautiful Mind" with Russell Crowe, Howard took home two Oscars in the same night — Best Director and Best Picture. That wasn't his only impressive behind-the-scenes work; you may remember him as the narrator for "Arrested Development." He also founded a production company, Imagine Entertainment, which produced films like "8 Mile" and "My Girl." Wearing so many hats so well turned Howard into a lovable Hollywood icon. As he told The Guardian, "I've come to appreciate my unique place in pop culture."

Howard spent much of his life on the two coasts of the US, hopping back and forth to the two biggest cities in entertainment. But Howard also grew his family during those years, including one daughter who followed his career choice, actor Bryce Dallas Howard. So when he's not on set filming the next great blockbuster, where does Ron Howard live — and how big is his house?

Ron Howard has called many places home

Ron Howard spent the first two weeks of lockdown in fall of 2020 "sleeping in his editing office near his home in Connecticut" because his wife and daughter Paige both had COVID-19, The Guardian reported. The famous director wanted to stay nearby while his family isolated — "So I lived in the editing room."

As a child actor, he grew up in Burbank, California. But because he went to public school outside of his work in Hollywood, he recalled to The New York Times, "kids would taunt me." Howard added, "I got bullied and stuff in school because I was 'Dopey Opie,'" referencing his "The Andy Griffith Show" character. As a result of the bullies, Howard said he became an introvert and "very good at wrestling." He also became very good at making money, purchasing a home in Encino, Los Angeles for over half a million dollars in 1979, according to the Los Angeles Times. He sold the property in 1986, then, Howard and his wife Cheryl bought an impressive compound in Connecticut in 1991 before selling it in 2014, per the Los Angeles Times.

Other real estate holdings included his purchase of a West Village apartment in 2002 and then in 2004, an apartment in the Eldorado building, bordering Central Park in Upper Manhattan, Variety reported. In California, Howard reportedly owned a 2,474-square-foot condo — complete with ocean views — in Santa Monica that he bought in 2006 for $2.75 million.

Ron Howard's house was worthy of his reputation

During a video chat in 2020, an interviewer for The Guardian caught a glimpse of Ron Howard's residence. Reportedly, his family home in Connecticut, "from the little I can see, looks lovely; impressive, but not showy." As Howard described his house, "Yes, as gilded hamster cages with velvet wheels go, this one's not bad."

Previously, Howard and his family lived in an astounding complex on Conyers Farm in Greenwich, Connecticut — about an hour outside of New York City. The property was a "17,000-square-foot, six-bedroom mansion," per the New York Post. However, Howard sold the estate in 2014 for $27.5 million. The director listed his home for ten days before selling at the asking price to billionaire Jim Clark, the co-founder of Netscape, and his wife Kristy Hinze. The proud new owners acquired a lake-side property with a pool, indoor basketball and tennis courts, a greenhouse, horse barns, and an observatory, as the Wall Street Journal described. The 32-acre estate also included a screening room for friends and family to see early cuts of his films. Reportedly, Howard and his wife wanted to raise their kids outside of Hollywood and began adding the impressive amenities to make the property a dream home for the entire family.

It also helped that Howard had plenty of money to continually upgrade the place. According to Celebrity Net Worth, Howard was worth an estimated $200 million as of 2021.
