This Is Where They Film HGTV's Love It Or List It

If you ask "Love It or List It" fans if they would love or list the show, their answer would most probably be a resounding "Love It." The HGTV show has been on air for more than a decade, signifying that it's receiving a lot of love from viewers all over the world. Hosted by interior designer Hilary Farr and realtor David Visentin, "Love It or List It" has Farr redesigning her clients' homes while Visentin tries to find them a new one. At the end, the homeowners must decide to love their home or list and move out of their home.

It's been 13 years since the show debuted on television, and it looks like the network doesn't have any plans on pulling the plug (although Farr is set to star on another show called "Tough Love"). So, it's safe to say we will see Farr renovating plenty of more houses while Visentin scouts new ones in their quest to make homeowners happy, and they'll continue to make viewers fantasize about the many possibilities out there when it comes to home buying and renovation.

"Love It or List It" has gotten so popular that it became a franchise in its own right. It was able to spawn multiple spinoffs, each of which is based in various locations. To date, a version of "Love It or List It" is being aired in the U.K., New Zealand, Australia, France, Finland, and more. If you're curious as to where the OG show is being filmed, it turns out that it switches between two locations.

Episodes of Love It or List It were filmed in two countries

David Visentin has a pretty clear idea on where he'd love to film "Love It or List It." In a 2020 interview with Monsters and Critics, the host said that he'd love a chance to film in two American cities. "I would love to go to Nashville. I would love to go to Charleston. I know part of it would have to be where there's a real estate market that most people can relate to," he shared. And while he thinks filming in a famous city like New York would be interesting, he said that people might get confused due to how expensive the homes are to begin with.

As for their current production location, PopSugar notes that the first few seasons were filmed in Ontario, which also happens to be where both hosts live. They then moved to North Carolina in 2014. "We're going for a sort of in-between, Raleigh, North Carolina, and Durham," Visentin added in his Monster and Critics interview. "We are doing cities like Durham, Wake Forest ... all over the place."

But it looks like the show will once again conquer the Great White North. On the HGTV website, the network announced that they are looking for Toronto-based homeowners to be featured on the show. The requirements? You need to have a budget of at least $75,000 and would be willing to temporarily move out of your home during the renovation.

An expert says that Love It or List It is realistic

Part of the allure of home improvement programs is that they give viewers the idea that you can totally transform your house if you have the design know-how and budget. In the case of "Love It or List It," seasoned designer Suzan Wemlinger praised the fact that the hosts honor what the homeowners can afford — because according to her, that's not always the case for design shows.

"Although most of these shows are not realistic when it comes to what it really costs to renovate a home, this one addresses the fact that the homeowner's wish list usually outweighs their budget," she told Insider. "They are told by Hilary [Farr] that they will have to either select which items to take off the list, or add more funds to their investment. That's real life."

She also sang praises as to how "Love It or List It" is able to cater to the homeowner's wishes with regards to the design. She said that doing so entails a lot of creative prowess, as opposed to the standard designs many home makeover programs always seem to showcase. It's always nice to know a reality television show is actually close to reality!
