Sweet Life: Los Angeles Season 2 - Here's What We Can Tell Fans So Far

With so many reality shows on broadcast networks and streaming services, viewers have the option to watch programs that reflect their specific preferences. Representation in the sub-genre has also improved in recent years due to many production companies approving shows from Black creators and people of color. Issa Rae, for instance, is one celebrity who's making changes to the television landscape with her shows. Viewers may recognize her from HBO's "Insecure," but she also has her hand in reality television with "Sweet Life: Los Angeles," which premiered on HBO Max in August 2021.

Per Deadline, "Sweet Life: Los Angeles" follows a group of Black friends in South Los Angeles as they strive for success in their careers, while showcasing their personalities and interactions with friends and family. In a statement announcing the show's pickup, Jennifer O'Connell, HBO's executive vice president of Non-Fiction and Live-Action Family, said, "We are thrilled to partner with Issa Rae on this fun, dynamic series about a real group of friends and their unique, yet intertwined experiences in South Los Angeles, which has a one-of-a-kind culture that deserves a spotlight all its own."

The 10-episode series concluded in September, and fans are dying to know if "Sweet Life: Los Angeles" will be renewed for a second season. Here's everything we know so far.

When will Sweet Life: Los Angeles Season 2 be released?

As of this writing, HBO has not yet confirmed whether "Sweet Life: Los Angeles" has been renewed for a second season. This means that no release date has been confirmed either, but given Issa Rae's close ties with the network, it looks likely that the show will be returning for a second season in 2022. Besides "Sweet Life: Los Angeles" and "Insecure," Rae is also producing another show called "Rap S**t" for HBO, so clearly, the network has a lot of faith in her to produce content that everyone loves.

For Rae, though, her inspiration for the shows came from past influences and what she liked to watch. In an interview with Entertainment Weekly, Rae said she created "Sweet Life: Los Angeles" because of her obsession with reality TV. "This idea came to my team and we discussed it. And just as an avid reality fan, I was like, 'Oh, I want to do this. I want to do my version of [MTV's] 'The Hills' meets [BET's] 'Baldwin Hills.' I want to do 'Baldwin Hills' with 'The Hills' production quality and set it in South L.A. with an older group of people," she explained.

Rae added that she was very particular about how she wanted the show to look and "didn't want it to represent L.A. in a corny way." Given Rae's passion for the series, it seems unlikely that HBO would cancel the series, so a renewal could be imminent.

Who will be part of the cast on Sweet Life: Los Angeles Season 2?

The first season of "Sweet Life: Los Angeles" featured a group of young, hungry Black friends in their mid-20s who navigate love, friendship, blossoming careers, and drama. Per IMDb, the cast included P'Jae Compton, Tylynn Burns, Amanda Scott, Jerrold Smith II, Cheryl Des Vigne, Jordan Bentley, and Briana Jones. They all have careers and will surely look to continue their storylines on the second season of the show, should it be picked up by HBO.

According to Distractify, two of the main storylines viewers should look out for if there's a second season are: Jerrold's relationship with Cheryl and whether or not they are ready to move onto the next stages of their lives together, and if Jordan and Bentley's love will last amid their rising careers. However, Rae and other producers could look to shake things up by inviting other people not associated with this friend circle into the mix should Season 2 get the green light. Regardless of what happens, viewers will be welcomed with familiar faces if and when the show returns.

What else is there to know about Sweet Life: Los Angeles Season 2?

While Issa Rae serves as the creator and producer of "Sweet Life: Los Angeles," she — much to fans' dismay — will not be appearing on the show. Rae spoke about her involvement with Variety at the premiere of the show in August. "I feel very much like the auntie or the godmother overseeing it," she said, adding, "I'm an observer and I'm just rooting for them. I'm not in the mix in that way. I want them to succeed and I want them to be happy with their life journey. I really do love them from a distance."

And Rae means what she says, as she hasn't met the cast in person, either. She only interacted with them via Zoom at the start of production in February. Cast members also had to be in a bubble while filming because of COVID-19 restrictions, she revealed to Variety, making in-person meet-ups that much harder. However, Rae is immensely proud of what she has accomplished with HBO when it comes to "Sweet Life: Los Angeles" and other series. "[It's] all a dream come true," she said. "This is what you pray about."

Let us also pray that Season 2 of "Sweet Life: Los Angeles" will get the go ahead so Rae can continue living her dreams.
