Angelina Jolie's Close Relationship With Jacqueline Bisset Explained
If you've ever seen the 2005 film "Mr. & Mrs. Smith," then you'll know that it stars Angelina Jolie and the man who became her husband, the father of her children, and then her ex, Brad Pitt. The film was also supposed to feature a performance from industry legend Jacqueline Bisset. Unfortunately, her part didn't quite make it into the final version of the movie.
"The first film I got cut out of was ['Mr. & Mrs. Smith'] with Angelina," Bisset told People in September. She explained that she and "Terence Stamp ... played Angelina and Brad Pitt's bosses." Saying that "they were very small parts," in the end, "it didn't work [in the film], and then they recast it, with apparently two other actors." Why? Well, according to Bisset, "They said we were too British."
While fans surely would have loved to see classic film star Bisset in the film, the role would have been notable for a particular reason. It turns out that Jolie and Bisset have a special relationship. Read on to find out more about their bond and how they became a part of each other's lives in the first place!
Jacqueline Bisset and Angelina Jolie's mom had a special connection
Jacqueline Bisset and Angelina Jolie may have (almost) appeared together in a film as adults, but Bisset actually knew Jolie much earlier than that. In fact, she knew Jolie before the "Mr. & Mrs. Smith" star was even born. That's because the older actor had worked with the younger celeb's father, Jon Voight, in "The End of the Game" back in the '70s. That's how Bisset met and formed a bond with someone else – Jolie's now-late mother, Marcheline Bertrand.
"I met her around 1971 when I was making a movie with director Maximilian Schell and Jon Voight, who [Bertrand] was married to at the time," Bisset explained while talking to People. Saying that they "became friends," the star added, "She asked me to be [Jolie's] godmother when Angie was in the tummy."
Although Bisset and Bertrand were obviously close enough for the latter to make such a significant request, Bisset and Jolie apparently haven't had the same kind of bond over the years.
Jacqueline Bisset admitted something about her relationship with Angelina Jolie
Jacqueline Bisset may have been close to Angelina Jolie's mom, Marcheline Bertrand, however, it seems like Bisset and Jolie drifted apart for a time. In fact, there was a point when they weren't really a part of each other's lives despite the fact that Bisset is Jolie's godmother.
"Unfortunately, I haven't developed a close relationship with Angelina. I see her rarely, but I'm very admiring of her," Bisset admitted in 2015 on "Loose Women" (via W Magazine). Noting that what she "find[s] difficult is [that] she's become so famous," which means that "many people are pulling on her time." She explained, "I'm a little bit shy and I don't want to be someone who tries to take advantage of her."
However, by 2019, it looked like the two had reconnected as W Magazine reported that they were seen spending time together in Paris. Then, while talking to People in September, the outlet not only claimed that Bisset still feels protective of Jolie (which is just so sweet), but she also expressed how fond she is of her goddaughter, saying, "I find her rather extraordinary. Her whole aura is breathtaking, and it's amazing how much she's changed in different stages [of life]. She's evolved so much." We're sure that would make Jolie's mom proud.
