Amelie Anstead is a huge fan of playing sports
Although Amelie Anstead lives with her mother in England, she flies frequently to California to spend time with her father, Ant Anstead. When she isn't traveling, she loves playing sports. In addition to netball, Amelie is a huge fan of playing rugby, according to an interview with Girls Rugby Club. She explained her interest in the sport to interviewers.
"I've always grown up with lots of brothers and a step-dad who all played rugby so naturally I took a bit of an interest," Amelie stated. "I had taken part in a few mixed touch tournaments and had always loved it but ... was often put off rugby as it wasn't 'girly' enough." The teen added that during the coronavirus pandemic lockdown in March of 2020, she wanted to stay active despite the restrictions. Fortunately, she lived a few minutes away from a rugby club and decided to give it a go one day. "Since then I haven't looked back," she says.
After joining the rugby club, Amelie realized that her teammates were overwhelmingly male and decided to start a girls' team near her school. She's now determined to give girls more visibility within the sport, explaining, "Being constantly told by the media that ... we 'aren't elite' athletes just because of our gender is very demotivating ... Proving that girls can play rugby, and that it's never too late to try a new sport is so important for the movement."
