Everything We Know About Tiger King 2
Remember when we were all obsessed with "Tiger King" when it first premiered on Netflix back in early 2020? It was a simpler time, perhaps, before we realized the pandemic would last for more than a year and prior to the making of #FreeBritney documentaries. Time has certainly passed and brought us things we never thought would happen, and that also means we're getting a Season 2 of "Tiger King."
The first season of the show chronicled the rivalry between so-called "Tiger King" Joe Exotic and Carole Baskin, who founded and ran her own rescue park, Big Cat Rescue. Baskin's position was that Joe's tiger park was exploiting and harming animals. In Joe's opinion, Carole had killed her husband (there is little evidence of this, she has never been charged, and she has denied it) and was out to ruin him and his business. The series ended with Joe in prison for attempting to hire a hitman to murder Carole.
Since then, Carole has gone on to compete on "Dancing With the Stars" and Joe Exotic is still serving out his 22-year prison sentence. It's tough to imagine where the show can go from where it left off, but apparently, there's plenty of more material. This is what we know.
Netflix promises 'Tiger King 2' will have just as much 'mayhem'
Per CNN, "Tiger King 2" was filmed in 2020 and part of 2021, which, in case you forgot, puts it smack dab in the middle of the global pandemic. In a tweet announcing the show's return, Netflix said, "Tiger King is coming back this year — and Season 2 promises just as much mayhem and madness as Season 1!" Well at least that's something to go on, though not much. There's still so many unanswered questions: What kind of logistical problems did quarantine pose when filming? Will the series revisit the old associates of Joe Exotic? Will Carole Baskin be back?
We do know that the filmmakers have been teasing a part two of the series since the first season premiered. In an interview with Entertainment Weekly in March 2020, producer Rebecca Chaiklin said, "I mean, yes we have a crazy amount of footage and it's a story that's still unfolding. We're not sure yet, but there could be a follow-up on this story because there's a lot that's still unfolding in it, and it'll be just as dramatic and just as colorful as what has unfolded these past few years."
Now that the follow-up has been confirmed, what else do we know?
'Tiger King 2' doesn't have an official release date yet
We don't have an official release date for "Tiger King 2" as of now. What we do have is a very short teaser from Netflix to go on.
The clips appear to show the return of Carole Baskin through a pair of black heels paired with black tights and funky flared pants walking across the ground. It also looks like Joe Exotic will appear, as a clip looks like it was recorded of him speaking into a phone in prison. As for the other characters we met in Season 1? Well, as Entertainment Weekly pointed out, a lot of them appear to have gone through some stuff lately. Jeff Lowe and wife Lauren were accused of violating the Endangered Species Act and subsequently had over five dozen of their animals seized by federal authorities; Eric Cowie, who testified against Joe Exotic, has died; and Doc Antle has been indicted on charges of wildlife trafficking.
It's possible that "Tiger King 2" will depict the stories behind those legal woes, or it might focus the majority of its attention on the continuing legal battles of both Joe Exotic and his nemesis Carole Baskin. And as the filmmakers have already said, they have tons of archival footage they can use to further fill out the story. Only time will tell what Season 2 really has in store.
