The Truth About Billie Lourd's Tattoo
While Billie Lourd is known for her roles in "Scream Queens" and "American Horror Story" we can't help but remember the most personal role that actor has had: being the daughter of the late Carrie Fisher.
Her mom is best known for playing the iconic Princess Leia in "Star Wars." Despite her mother's success from the role, like most kids, Lourd did not want to think of her mother as cool growing up. "I couldn't understand why people loved Leia as much as they did," Lourd wrote in Time. "I didn't want to watch her movie, I didn't want to dress up like her, I didn't even want to talk about her. I just wanted my mom."
Eventually, Lourd began to realize what we all already knew: that her mom is the absolute coolest. When Lourd began her acting career alongside Fisher in the Star Wars sequel trilogy as Lieutenant Kaydel Ko Connix and was put in mini-Leia buns, there was nothing more sentimental. "She stood in the mirror behind me and smiled like we had gotten matching tattoos. Our secret-handshake hairstyle," Lourd reflected. However, in 2017, when Lourd got a real tattoo, her mom was smiling down differently.
Billie Lourd's tattoo honors her late mother
In 2017, Billie Lourd showed off her new tattoo to the world but that wasn't without showing the reason she got it: for her late mother, Carrie Fisher. Lourd posted to Instagram to show off the dainty new tattoo which features a small galaxy on her leg, outfitted with a moon, stars, and a planet. Yet, the tattoo is more than just a galaxy — it's an homage to her mom's tattoo. Fisher had a similar galactic design on the same leg. Yet, despite the similarities in their tattoo's Lourd's tattoo does look noticeably different from her mom's.
In an interview with InStyle, Lourd explained the differences. "Hers was a really horrible version of mine basically," Lourd teased. "Hers kind of looked like she got kicked in the leg." Fisher's tattoo had blue and purple shading in the background, which became a joke with her and Lourd. "So it kind of looked like a bruise galaxy," Lourd continued. "So I got a version of that that's classier, but not a bruise galaxy."
Billie Lourd continues to honor her mom
The tattoo that Billie Lourd got to honor her late mother Carrie Fisher is not the only way the actor continues to honor her mom. In September 2020, Lourd announced the birth of her and fiance Austen Rydell's baby boy named Kingston Fisher Lourd Rydell. Then, on the following May 4 — an unofficial "Star Wars" holiday based on the pun "May the 4th Be With You" — Lourd posted a photo of her son watching her mom in "Star Wars" while wearing a beanie with two Princess Leia buns on the side.
Not only that, Lourd recently went to Disneyland herself and posed in front of the Star Wars ride, Rise of the Resistance, while wearing Mickey Mouse ears styled like Princess Leia's hair. The actor also continues to honor her mom on social media by continually posting throwback photos of her and her mom. As she captioned one photo, "Finding the funny might take a while but I learned from the best and her voice will forever be in my head and in my heart."
