The True Meaning Behind 'Don't Go' By Skrillex, Justin Bieber & Don Toliver
If you seem to remember hearing a Justin Bieber song or two on your playlist that had a Skrillex-ish vibe to it, that's because the A-list singer and the popular producer have worked together in the past. According to NME, Skrillex was the writing force behind Bieber's "2 Much" and also produced "Sorry." That's not to mention "Where Are Ü Now."
That's why fans surely weren't all that surprised — but were still likely thrilled — when Bieber and Skrillex teamed up again for "Don't Go." Released on August 20, this time around, the music industry powerhouse duo brought on board Don Toliver, the rapper behind "No Idea," "Cardigan," and "What You Need."
In "Don't Go," both Bieber and Toliver take on vocal duties to tell anyone who might be listening about a certain situation involving their significant others. Read on to find out exactly what's being said in this particularly catchy tune.
Justin Bieber and Don Toliver don't want this to happen
"My Mona Lisa, baby, my masterpiece, bae ... / When I'm in pieces, baby, you give me peace of mind / You tell me, 'We'll be fine,' you always get me right / When it's dark, you're my light," Justin Bieber sings in the first verse of "Don't Go," via Genius. He then goes on to reveal a little more, singing, "Baby, that's why I need you on the regular ... / And if it wasn't you, no, it would never work ... / ... Don't go." If it's not already obvious, Bieber is talking directly to the woman that he loves and is trying to tell her how special she is. And because she means so much to him, he needs her to stay with him.
Don Toliver joins Bieber in the second verse, adding, "I woke up in the city, I ain't seen your face / Almost lost my mind ..." He later continues by telling his lady (and his listeners), "Frozen, don't let me go ... but let it go, please / We've been so close, don't go ghostin' me .../My vital OG, that's all on the record, you make me better (Don't go)."
While it's clear that these two men don't want to be alone, that's not all that's being said in this song.
Justin Bieber and Don Toliver are willing to do what it takes
While Justin Bieber and Don Toliver aren't shy about admitting that they don't want to be abandoned by the women they care for, they take things a step further in the third verse of "Don't Go," via Genius, getting even more honest about themselves and their relationships. That's when they add, "Don't know what you're doing but you're needing love ... / Needing love (Needing love, don't go, don't —), how far can you get, girl? / You know I've been in love with you since the beginning, girl (Don't go, don't go)."
When it comes to Bieber, we'll assume he's referring to his wife, Hailey. Not only has he admitted that she has a major influence on his music, but he's also revealed what he's willing to do to keep her in his life. For instance, the celebrity couple has gone to therapy to keep their marriage healthy. That makes sense when you hear him sing in the chorus, "I put in the work to hear you say (Don't go, don't —) / Misery missin' your company (Don't go, don't go) / See 'em pullin' at you that way (Don't go, don't —) / Ooh, if this is where you're supposed to be (Don't go)."
While we don't know if Toliver has done the same (or if he would be willing to), there's no question these two stars want to put in the effort to keep their loves in their lives.
