Celebrity Hookups We Never Knew About Until Much Later
The following article includes brief references to allegations of domestic abuse, sexual harassment, and homophobia.
We don't know if celebrities date more than the average person, but it seems safe to say that folks in Hollywood are never starving for romantic attention. Or it at least appears that way when you consider the thousands of dates, hookups, flings, and relationships covered by the tabloids each year. Seeing as how those are just the connections we know about, a true picture of the celebrity dating game may never truly be had. Even their online dating profiles — which often happens by way of the super-selective and very secretive dating app Raya — are kept under strict lock and key.
But we are here to talk about a specific kind of celebrity romance, ones that we didn't know about at the time they were happening, but on which someone spilled the beans at a later date. We are using the term "hookup" loosely, but none of the connections on our list resulted in anything serious. Most of them were flings — more than a date or two but short-lived and on the downlow. Many of the celebrity hookups that the world knows about are juicy and sometimes pretty scandalous. But it's those lesser-known ones that are really salacious, surprising, and sometimes just straight up silly. And we didn't even include some of the most random hookups, like Madonna and Tupac Shakur (what?) or Oprah Winfrey and Roger Ebert (double what?).
Here is a selection of the most interesting celeb hookups that we didn't know about until much later.
Leonardo DiCaprio and Naomi Campbell had a fling before his Titanic fame
Leonardo DiCaprio's love life is so notorious that there are memes about it, but it's not because the star is especially open about his dalliances. In fact, DiCaprio is incredibly private, and it's only because of his mass fame and the paparazzi attention it brings that we know about the dude's personal life. Much has been written about the commonalities between DiCaprio's partners — specifically their ages, which have stayed in the same range even as the actor has gotten older. From Nina Agdal to Blake Lively to Kelly Rohrbach, the overwhelming majority of DiCaprio's love interests were in their early 20s when he dated them, and very rarely has the actor dated anyone over 25. Gigi Hadid, the 28-year-old model he's reportedly dating, as of this writing, is an unusual exception.
Beyond the age thing, DiCaprio also has a thing for models, as evidenced by his roster of exes that also includes Bar Rafaeli, Anne Vyalitsyna, Toni Garrn, Ela Kawalec, Camila Morrone, and plenty of others. The vast majority of DiCaprio's love interests have been tall and blonde, but there have been a few notable exceptions. One is legendary supermodel Naomi Campbell, with whom DiCaprio had a short-lived fling in 1995. This was one of the rare occasions where DiCaprio dated an older woman, but he was only 21 at the time and Campbell was — you guessed it — that magic number, 25. They didn't work out as a couple, but DiCaprio and Campbell have remained close friends over the years.
Cher has said Tom Cruise was one of her best lovers
Cher's love life has been anything but predictable, and that is one of the things we love most about the iconic singer. Never one to be locked in by cultural norms, Cher has dated all sorts of men, including many who were significantly younger than her. As of this writing, this includes her most recent paramour, music exec Alexander Edwards (40 years younger), as well as rocker Richie Sambora, actor Val Kilmer, baker Rob Camilletti, and producer Josh Donen. The latter two relationships were quite public, particularly the one with Camilletti, which supposedly ended due to the media scrutiny. Cher loves a camera, but it turns out she can also keep some of her dalliances secret — temporarily, at least.
For example, Cher had a brief romance with Tom Cruise a few years after meeting him at Madonna's 1985 wedding to Sean Penn but didn't open up about it until a 2008 interview with Oprah Winfrey. When they met, Cruise was 23 and on the up-and-up thanks to roles in films like "All the Right Moves" and "Risky Business." Cher was 39, but the 16-year age difference was by no means a dealbreaker for the stars, who crossed paths again at a White House event the next year. Details on the exact timeline are still unknown, with Cher telling the Daily Mail in 2018, "We didn't go out till way later, but there definitely was a connection there." On a 2013 episode of "Watch What Happens Live," Cher confessed that Cruise was one of the best lovers she had ever had.
Jay Leno and Sharon Osbourne had 'a little fling'
It's hard to picture Sharon Osbourne getting freaky with anyone other than her husband, Ozzy, who she married in 1982. But while Osbourne met her hubby in 1970, when she was 18, they didn't get together romantically until nine years later, clearing the way for other men to swoop in. In 2013, Osbourne made the startling admission that one of those men was comedian and fellow talk show host Jay Leno. She discussed their brief romance during an episode of "The Talk," back when she was still a co-host. "It's not like it's a dirty little secret," she said (via USA Today), although she also winced when she said Leno's name before erupting in laughter in response to the crowd's cheers.
Osbourne went on to explain that she had moved to America shortly before the liaison, had very few friends stateside, and rarely dated. One fateful night, she saw Leno performing stand-up at a club and because she liked him, prank called him with a friend. That feels like an odd flirting tactic for a 25-year-old, but it clearly worked, because the pair began a short romance after that initial call. "He came to my house and met me and then we had a little fling. The fling was more fling for me and not fling enough for him," she said. Osbourne also explained that Leno met his now-wife, Mavis — who he married in 1980 — only a few months later (thankfully, because we would have been robbed of great reality TV if Leno married Osbourne instead).
Tara Reid and Tom Brady had some sort of hookup
Tom Brady's love life receives ample amounts of scrutiny nowadays, but that wasn't always the case. Back in the day, Brady was actually free to date in peace without the glare of the paparazzi or scrutiny from his millions of fans (and haters). This was, of course, well before he became known as the GOAT and became arguably the most discussed football player of modern times.
Brady's first widely covered relationship was with model and actor Bridget Moynahan, with whom he shares his oldest son, Jack. The pair dated from 2004 to 2006 and split shortly before Moynahan found out she was pregnant, which is one reason the situation garnered a lot of media coverage. The other? Supermodel Gisele Bündchen, who Brady had already started dating by the time Moynahan's pregnancy became known. As most people under the sun know, Brady and Bündchen went on to get married, have two kids, and maintain a high-profile marriage for over a decade before their surprising split in 2022.
But we are not here to talk about Brady's baby mamas, so much as the women who predated them. One of them was Tara Reid, who reportedly had a short fling with Brady in 2002. We don't know many details about their time together but do know their connection was romantic, because Reid discussed that aspect on Australian radio show "Kylie and Jackie O" in 2014. She said they'd locked lips and that Brady is "pretty good-looking," but did not spill any juicy details (via Us Weekly).
Something romantic happened between Janet Jackson and Matthew McConaughey
Given that the public didn't even know that Janet Jackson was married to not one, but two of her ex-husbands, we have to assume that most hookups she's had have been kept firmly under wraps. Jackson's first walk down the aisle occurred in 1984, when she secretly eloped with James DeBarge. The couple annulled their marriage the next year, but history repeated itself when Jackson had another secret vow exchange with second husband Rene Elizondo Jr. While it was public knowledge that the pair were together, nobody was aware that they had made things legal until Elizondo's divorce filing in 2000, over a year after their separation. By that point, he and Jackson had been married for eight years.
We understand why someone as famous as Jackson would want to keep their personal life private, especially considering that she grew up in public and comes from a family full of tabloid targets. Nonetheless, we're itching for more information about her hookup with actor Matthew McConaughey. The duo was reported to have dated but no one knew for sure until McConaughey confirmed something happened on "Watch What Happens Live" in 2019, although on a much smaller scale than many assumed. "We went and had dinner one night," he told host Andy Cohen during a round of the "Plead the Fifth" game. "That was sort of it, yeah." The Mirror claims the stars hooked up for a few weeks after meeting at the Grammys in 2002, so the truth probably lies somewhere in between.
Shia LaBeouf and Megan Fox had a thing while filming Transformers
FKA Twigs met her ex-boyfriend, Shia LaBeouf, filming "Honey Boy," and they dated for almost a year from 2018 to 2019. This has become LaBeouf's most notable relationship because FKA Twigs sued LaBeouf in 2020, alleging physical, verbal, and sexual abuse at the hands of her former partner (the lawsuit is still ongoing as the trial has been delayed until November 2023, per Insider). After initially denying the allegations, LaBeouf admitted to at least some wrongdoing in a 2022 interview on Jon Bernthal's "Real Ones" podcast, without giving specifics. Needless to say, the relationship between FKA Twigs and LaBeouf did not end well, but the vast majority of the actor's famous exes have remained mum on the topic. The exception is Karolyn Pho, a former girlfriend who detailed similar claims.
The actor's list of exes is long, and LaBeouf has a history of hooking up with his co-stars. This has included Margaret Qualley, with whom he starred in a music video for Qualley's sister, as well as his "Transformers: Revenge of the Fallen" co-star, Isabel Lucas. It also includes Megan Fox, another of LaBeouf's "Transformers" franchise co-stars. "Look, you're on the set for six months, with someone who's rooting to be attracted to you, and you're rooting to be attracted to them," he told the now-defunct Details in 2011 (via E! News). "But the time I spent with Megan was our own thing, and I think you can see the chemistry onscreen." Fox confirmed the hookup in a 2018 "Watch What Happens Live" appearance.

Insiders say Megan Fox also hooked up with Robert Pattinson
Megan Fox really doesn't have a type, does she? Between her marriage to Brian Austin Green, her relationship with Machine Gun Kelly, and her dalliance with Shia LaBeouf, the actor has proven no real pattern to her dating choices. And Fox's one-time hookup Robert Pattinson is a whole other category altogether in comparison to those guys. Unlike her on-set fling with LaBeouf, which lasted for at least a little while during the filming of "Transformers," Fox and Pattinson reportedly shared just one single evening together. This happened around the time Fox was filming "Jennifer's Body," according to insiders cited by E! News.
"Jennifer's Body" came out in 2009, which means that Fox was already in her on-and-off relationship with Green at the time. They married in June 2010 but had been together since 2004. The supposed hookup occurred during a brief break in their courtship, after they called off their engagement but before their wedding in Hawaii. "Megan was totally into [Rob] and thought he was really cute," the source told E! News a few months later. "But nothing ever went further than one night they were together. He totally blew her off."
In an Elle interview very soon after, Fox insulted the very idea of dating both Pattinson and Zac Efron (perhaps due to hard feelings?). "They're just too pretty with the big hair and the suits. And Rob is, what, 22? Zac is 21? That's a joke. Boys in their twenties are a waste of time. They have nothing to offer conversationally," she said.
Justin Timberlake and Fergie had a fling when he was underage
Given his astronomical level of fame, Justin Timberlake couldn't really keep secrets about his dating life if he tried. Case in point: the worldwide furor that erupted when he got caught holding hands at a bar with "Palmer" co-star Alisha Wainwright, prompting rumors he was cheating on wife Jessica Biel. Before Biel, Timberlake had widely scrutinized relationships with Cameron Diaz and Britney Spears, and he's been linked to everyone from Ashley Olsen to Alyssa Milano. One of Timberlake's more surprising hookups was with singer Fergie, which only came out years later. It's not surprising that two attractive young talents, both of whom first found fame as children (she on "Kids Incorporated" and he on "The All-New Mickey Mouse Club") would link up, but their age difference makes it rather peculiar.
The duo dated sometime in 1996 and 1997, although reports have suggested it was a brief fling. "He was 16 and I was 23," Fergie told the Australian Courier Mail many years later (via Us Weekly). "It was before he got real heavy with Britney." Seven-year age differences can be nothing, especially in Hollywood, but the difference between being a younger teen and a mid-20s adult is striking. It's worth noting that the age of consent in California is — and was back then, as well — 18, which makes it extra surprising that Fergie would admit to the fling, but we also can't think of many grown women who would want to spend romantic time with a teenage boy, even if he was as iconic as Justin Timberlake.
Ryan Reynolds and Kristen Johnston dated when both were sitcom stars
Ryan Reynolds is another one of those stars whose taste seems to be all over the place. Before he married his current spouse, Blake Lively, Reynolds was previously wed to Scarlet Johansson. And if you don't think those two are different enough, consider that he also had a five-year relationship with singer Alanis Morissette, whose vibe is certainly not similar to either of those actors. Reynolds has a slew of other famous exes, including Melissa Joan Hart and Rachel Leigh Cook, and has allegedly had flings with big stars like Charlize Theron and Sandra Bullock. And Kristen Johnston is one person on Reynold's roster of exes that we only really heard about after the fact.
Reynolds was not yet a huge movie star when the pair dated and, in fact, Johnston was the big celebrity in the relationship thanks to her role on the sitcom "Third Rock from the Sun," for which she won two Primetime Emmy Awards. At the time, Reynolds was on a less acclaimed sitcom, suckered with the name "Two Guys, a Girl, and a Pizza Place." "It was so long ago, I forgot," Johnston said on "Watch What Happens Live" in 2020. "But literally, [he's] so nice. Great guy. Lovely." The couple was together from August 1999 to January 2000, and the only known photos of them are from the red-carpet premiere of "The Green Mile."
Reynolds has not made any public comments about Johnston, and is #couplesgoals with Lively, so we say leave the past in the past.
Matthew Perry broke up with Julia Roberts due to insecurity
Both Julia Roberts and Matthew Perry have colorful dating histories, and we actually think they seem like a much better match than either of them do with a lot of their previous and subsequent choices. Roberts has been married to Danny Moder for more than two decades now, but it took her a while to find her forever person. Before Moder, she dated Liam Neeson, Dylan McDermott, Kiefer Sutherland, Jason Patric, and Benjamin Bratt. She was also briefly married to Lyle Lovett, who she married in 1993 after only a few weeks of dating (30 years later, we are still processing this one). All of Roberts' relationships received considerable media coverage, save for her short romance with "Friends" star Matthew Perry.
Perry — who has also been linked to Lizzy Caplan, Yasmine Bleeth, and Lauren Graham — wrote about his relationship with Roberts in his memoir "Friends, Lovers, and the Big Terrible Thing," and admitted that he was the one who ended things. Their brief fling started when Perry was tapped to court Roberts for a guest appearance on "Friends." After he sent three dozen roses and a surely hilarious card, Roberts signed on for the show, and for romance. The whole thing lasted only a couple of months due to Perry's insecurities. "I had been constantly certain that she was going to break up with me," he wrote in the book. "... So instead of facing the inevitable agony of losing her, I broke up with the beautiful and brilliant Julia Roberts."
Pink and Joey Fatone had a thing when she opened up for NSYNC
Pink is tough and outspoken and, well, kind of a badass. She is madly talented and incredibly creative, and so she's in need of an equally amazing partner. The singer seems to have found that in her husband, Carey Hart, with whom she shares two children. The pair first started dating in 2001, and though they had a couple of breaks before and after their 2006 wedding, they appear to be on solid footing nowadays. Beyond the professional motorcyclist who put a ring on it, we know of few other people Pink romanced. And her only other known flings have been with other musicians, including (allegedly) Treach and Tommy Lee. Oh, and then Joey Fatone.
If you are surprised about that last one, you are not alone. Pink is cool and controversial and edgy, while Fatone is a giant bull of goofiness. We love his goofy, as cheesy as it may seem, but we would have never picked it for someone like Pink. And yet, Pink has said that she had a covert relationship with the NSYNC singer when she was the band's opening act in the early aughts. "Joey Fatone was in love with me," she confessed in a 2013 Glamour interview. "He took me to Friendly's on a date and he bought me an ice cream. Such a sweetheart. He asked my dad's permission."
That is about all we know about the fling, so there are no details about how long the two hooked up or how things ended.
Amanda Seyfried revealed a secret fling with Alexander Skarsgård
Amanda Seyfried is happily married to fellow actor Thomas Sadoski, who she met in 2015 when they co-starred in the Off-Broadway play "The Way We Get By." They reunited to film the movie "The Last Word" later that year, confirmed a relationship in 2016, and were married in 2017. Now they have two kids and live on an idyllic farm in Upstate New York. Before she was married, Seyfried had a couple of relatively public long-term relationships — one with her "Mamma Mia" co-star, Dominic Cooper, and another with actor Justin Long. She also had flings with Ryan Phillippe and Josh Hartnett, both of which were covered by the tabloids. Somehow, Seyfried was able to keep her brief romance with Alexander Skarsgård a secret for years before spilling the beans in a 2011 Elle interview.
Even though we would shout about a relationship with the hunky Skarsgård from every rooftop in town, we are sure Seyfried had her reasons for staying mum. Most likely, it was the notoriously private Skarsgård who insisted on the covertness of the romance, since he has traditionally been much less publicly available than Seyfried. We don't know the exact timeline of when the pair dated, but it was around the time Seyfried was involved with Cooper, which would place the hookup sometime between 2007 and 2010, per People. "We dated. He's super funny, but I was too involved with Dom [Cooper]," she told Elle. For his part, Skarsgård had a child with his girlfriend, Tuva Novotny, in March 2023.
Carmen Electra spoke highly of Simon Cowell years after they hooked up
We have included a few people on this list with eclectic tastes, and Carmen Electra is another celebrity who falls into that camp. We have no idea what Electra looks for in a man because her past romances have been with extremely different kinds of guys. She has gone for sporty dudes (ex-husband Dennis Rodman), edgy dudes (ex-husband Dave Navarro), and even funny dudes, like comedian and actor David Spade. We don't know where we would place reality TV judge Simon Cowell, but it's certainly not in one of those three categories. Still, Electra dug him enough for things to turn romantic for a few months starting in December 2009.
There was a little bit of fanfare at the time Electra and Cowell were dating, so we sort of knew about it, but everything was rumor until Electra confirmed it on an episode of "Oprah: Where Are They Now?" in 2014. She revealed that she never officially dated Cowell but confirmed that something romantic happened. "We never dated. We didn't date. He wasn't my man," she said. Rumor is that things ended between Electra and Cowell when she caught him sneaking around with Lauren Silverman, who was married at the time and to whom Cowell has been engaged since 2021 (they also had a baby in 2014). We don't know if that part is true, but Electra clearly has no ill feelings about the hookup. "I think he's awesome and very charming," she told Loaded magazine in 2014 (via the Daily Mail).
Gene Hackman and Cloris Leachman shared a passionate evening
For this one, we are going way back — but don't fret, because this is one of the juiciest hookups on our list. We also didn't hear about this connection until 2009, which is when the late Cloris Leachman released "Cloris: My Autobiography." Never one to mince words, Leachman was upfront about her past escapades, including her hookups. One, in particular, made the news cycle: her liaison with fellow legend Gene Hackman. According to the book, Leachman and Hackman were both shooting movies in San Francisco when they shared a single night of passion in the 1970s. They were staying at the same hotel and after crossing paths, decided to get dinner, which led to more.
"As we moved into the main course, it was as if a cosmic wind enveloped us. Some giant space magnet was pulling us together," Leachman wrote (via Vulture). "We didn't finish the meal. We went upstairs, flew into bed and made love. It was epic. And the next morning, Gene went back to his film and I went back to mine. I haven't seen Gene since that night, but I remember well the feisty lad he was."
We should note that Leachman was married to writer, producer, and actor George Englund from 1953 to 1979. Her book details Englund's affair with Joan Collins, so the marriage was clearly not without other infidelities. Hackman — who has been married to pianist Betsy Arakawa since 1991 — was wedded to his first wife, Faye Maltese, at the time of the Leachman encounter.
Ben Stiller didn't plead the fifth on his fling with Brandi Glanville
"The Real Housewives of Beverly Hills" alum Brandi Glanville has some of the loosest lips in Hollywood, and she loves to spill the tea on who she has dated and/or slept with. The men she names are not always as keen to admit to things, perhaps due to the controversial Glanville's public persona. For example, she's claimed to have been romanced by both Matt LeBlanc and David Schwimmer, but neither "Friends" star has acknowledged any sort of relationship with the reality star. Schwimmer did once refute a specific story she told about him wearing makeup, saying only "the story is false" via his publicist, per Page Six.
Ben Stiller is one of Glanville's conquests who has actually fessed up to their fling, but not until he was confronted about it by our favorite nosy talk show host, Andy Cohen. Shortly after Glanville started talking about their romance, Stiller appeared on "Watch What Happens Live." This was in early 2016, years and years after the hookup with Glanville, which occurred before he married Christine Taylor in 2000. "It was short-lived and it was fun, I wouldn't characterize it as a relationship," Stiller told Cohen during a game of "Plead the Fifth." "It was a couple of dates and fun. I'm not sure my wife even is aware of that."
Glanville, meanwhile, subsequently discussed Stiller's private parts on a 2020 episode of the podcast "Everything Iconic with Danny Pellegrino."
Gerard Butler didn't know who Brandi Glanville was when they hooked up
Gerard Butler is another actor who admitted to a hookup with Brandi Glanville, and since he similarly confessed on an episode of "Watch What Happens Live," we have Andy Cohen to thank for yet another juicy celebrity admission. Butler's comments came after Glanville had already discussed their hookup, so let's backtrack first to Glanville's initial confession. She let it slip in a 2012 appearance on "Watch What Happens Live," back when she was still on "The Real Housewives of Beverly Hills." She kind of had no choice since she was playing "Plead the Fifth" and had already used up her non-answer on the first question. Glanville named Butler as her most famous hookup but said that things lasted only a week before fizzling out.
Butler played it cool when a TMZ paparazzo tracked him down, asking "Who's Brandi Glanville?" in a way that made it unclear what went down. But then, ever true to his probing nature, Cohen asked Butler about the hookup when he appeared on the Bravo talk show years later. After first pretending to redirect the conversation, Butler fessed up. "I had no idea who she was. And I kept saying, 'So, what do you do?' She goes, 'It doesn't matter. It's not important,'" he explained on the 2018 episode. "... Anyway, we hung out, we had fun, and then I never saw her again."
Glanville was seemingly incensed by these comments and went on a Twitter rant that might just explain why some men don't publicly acknowledge hooking up with her.
Dax Shepard blabbed about dating Ashley Olsen on his podcast
We absolutely love Dax Shepard's relationship with his wife, Kristen Bell, which the two have very openly and honestly discussed over the years — warts and all. The pair started dating shortly after meeting in 2007 but waited until 2013 to get married as a show of support for the LGBTQ+ community (2013 is when Prop 8 was overturned in California). Before he met Bell, Shepard dated a number of notable names, none seriously. Most of these famous flings happened after the end of his long-term relationship with actor Briegh Morrison in 2006 and before he met Bell. For instance, Shepard was briefly linked to actor Kate Hudson and skater Tara Lipinski during this time period.
In 2022, Shepard admitted to one more fling on an episode of his podcast "Armchair Expert," and it was not one we would have predicted. "I dated Ashley Olsen. And she's just the most wonderful person. She's fantastic," he told his co-host, adding, "When we were dating, it was when she was putting all her energy and focus into launching [The Row] in a big way. So, I was able to see her meet with design teams and, like, run her s*** and she handled her B, and it's very impressive."
His reference to The Row helped us come up with a rough timeframe for the romance, and The Row's 2006 founding coincides perfectly with Shepard's frisky hookup years just after that aforementioned breakup. Olsen is now married to artist Louis Eisner but is extremely private about her relationship.
Elliot Page and Kate Mara were secretly involved years ago
Elliot Page spilled a ton of secrets in his 2023 book "Pageboy: A Memoir," which is exactly what we expect from a juicy celebrity tell-all. In some instances, Page kept people's names a secret — for example, he never named the famous actor who threatened to forcefully have sex with him while also making homophobic remarks back when Page was pre-transition and gay-identified. For some reason, Page protected this person's identity, but that doesn't mean he didn't name names in other places in the book.
One of the stories in the book that has received the most media attention involves a fling that Page had with fellow actor Kate Mara. Mara was okay with Page discussing their affair, even though it was previously unknown to the public and Mara had not previously discussed being a part of the queer community. "The first person I fell for after my heart was broken Kate Mara," Page wrote (via People). "She had a boyfriend at the time, the lovely and talented Max Minghella." While the fling was kept secret from the public, it should be noted that Minghella was aware of what was going on and supportive of Mara's exploration. We don't know exactly how long the two hooked up for, but it was around the time of "X-Men: Days of Future Past," which came out in 2014.

Mark-Paul Gosselaar had a fling with co-star Elizabeth Berkley
Though they may not necessarily resemble hookups between grown adults, a lot of teenagers hook up when in high school. For celebrity teens, there is no traditional high school, and so the set often becomes a makeshift version of one. It's not uncommon for former child stars to later reveal on-set crushes and flings with their co-stars, but few have as many tales to tell as "Saved by the Bell" star Mark-Paul Gosselaar. Gosselaar hooked up with or dated not one, not two, but all three of his female co-stars while filming the iconic series in the late 1980s and early 1990s. "All of us dated at one point or another — it was incestuous!" Gosselaar told People in 2009.
According to E! News, Gosselaar and Lark Voorhies dated for three years, so we won't classify that one as a hookup. He also had at least a flirtation with Tiffani Thiessen, but most likely more if we believe executive producer Peter Engel's assertion that they dated (neither actor has confirmed exactly what went on in clear terms). Gosselaar definitely had a full-on fling with Elizabeth Berkley though, and he discussed it on Anna Faris' podcast "Unqualified" in 2019. "We dated. ... If you want to call it dating, sure," Gosselaar said. "You're in an environment, you know how it is when you're working on a set, and we were young. I mean, we were young. There's no one around really. I mean, you work and live in a bubble."
Mario Lopez and Tiffani Thiessen also hooked up during the SBTB era
Look, we don't know what was in the water fountain at Bayside High, but the "Saved by the Bell" set was apparently a randy place! The late Dustin Diamond aside, there is no one on the main cast who didn't have some sort of romance with a fellow co-star. And since the cast was not extremely large, that means there was a lot of overlap. While we don't know exactly what went down between Mark-Paul Gosselaar and Tiffani Thiessen, we do know that they had some sort of romance, as previously mentioned. But Gosselaar is not the only co-star Thiessen had her eye on — she also had the hots for Mario Lopez, Gosselaar's on-screen rival and off-screen friend.
Lopez and Thiessen's brief relationship has been known for a while, at least since Lopez published his memoir "Just Between Us" in 2014. In the book, the actor detailed how the pair hung out for a while before becoming official, after which he cheated. "I thought that being loyal to Tiffani was the right thing to do," he wrote. "But I can't say that I was capable at that age of following through on my noble intentions."
Executive producer Peter Engel discussed the relationship in his own 2016 memoir "I Was Saved by the Bell: Stories of Life, Love, and Dreams that Do Come True," which included providing details on the dissolution of the romance. "He was in his dressing room, making out with an extra, and Tiffani came in, catching him red-handed," Engel wrote (via Radar).
Brian Austin Green and Tori Spelling have different takes on their past
Both Brian Austin Green and Tori Spelling admit that they hooked up while filming "Beverly Hills 90210," where they played the show's most enduring couple, David Silver and Donna Martin. The actors differ, however, in their feelings about what their relationship was, and don't even agree about whether there was a true attraction. When asked in a 2019 interview with "BUILD Series" if he ever had a crush on Spelling, Green laughed and said no. "We were kids, we were doing a show, it was — Tori's awesome, we had a lot of fun, but I'm one of those serial monogamist daters," he added, before listing off the "90210" stars he did actually date (Tiffani Thiessen and Vanessa Marcil, with whom he has a son).
Spelling first discussed hooking up with Green in 2015 on Lifetime's "Celebrity Lie Detector," but framed it as a brief romance rather than a purely sexual thing. And while Green may not have been crushing on Spelling, he confirmed that something sexual happened between them in a 2019 appearance on (where else?) "Watch What Happens Live." "We hooked up, yeah. We did. But we were young ... so that's what young people do," he said.
A year later, Spelling acknowledged their differing memories from that time on the podcast "Women on Top." "I was like, 'Remember that summer we were together? You said, "I love you," and I said, "I love you."' And he remembers none of that," Spelling explained. "He was like, 'No, we hooked up. We were friends.'"
Lance Bass and Andy Cohen are mum on the specifics of their hookup
Andy Cohen has come up a lot on this list as someone who knows how to get celebrities to spill their juicy hookup secrets, and we cannot believe the number of big-name stars that have been willing to play his brutal "Plead the Fifth" game on "Watch What Happens Live." Cohen mostly speaks abstractly about his own dating life as a single gay dad, though we know about his ex-boyfriends, Clifton Dassuncao (who Cohen dated for two years) and John Hill, with whom Cohen co-hosts "Andy Cohen Live" on SiriusXM. We also know that Cohen may have once made out with Cheyenne Jackson, which Jackson alluded to on an episode of Cohen's talk show, but Cohen either didn't remember or feigned not remembering.
One person we know Cohen for sure remembers hooking up with is NSYNC hottie Lance Bass, since both he and Bass discussed the rendezvous in the press. Cohen first made the admission in a 2014 "ET" interview, when he was asked about a famous person that people would be surprised he hooked up with. The next year, Bass clarified that things were not as intense as people assume. "I can just tell you right now, there was no Andy D going in my B," he said on SiriusXM's "Dirty Pop" (via ET). "I'm not going to tell you what went down ... but it's not what people are thinking." Cohen again acknowledged the hookup in a 2015 "The Howard Stern Show" interview, but also refused to go into the details.
Kelly Clarkson and Justin Guarini dated after American Idol wrapped
If you are old enough to have watched Season 1 of "American Idol," you probably vividly remember the moment that Kelly Clarkson won and confetti came streaming from the ceiling. You might also vaguely remember her runner-up, Justin Guarini, and unfortunately, the critically panned movie they were contractually obligated to make together called "From Justin to Kelly." It felt like the whole world was shipping Clarkson and Guarini, especially after the movie, but they consistently denied anything romantic. Years later, we learned that the two of them did actually have a fling, but that it happened after Clarkson took the crown.
Guarini first discussed his brief romance with Clarkson during a 2014 live show at Bucks County Playhouse in New Hope, Pennsylvania. Per E! News, he said that the two started things up after the end of "Idol," while filming the movie, but that the fling fizzled out because of Clarkson's quickly rising fame (he had previously only alluded to them having a "good time" on set, so this was new information).
"So we dated like for months. It wasn't long at all," Clarkson said on the "Las Culturistas" podcast in July 2023, adding that it was not some elaborate secret. "We dated. I think we're just not kiss and tell people generally." When Guarini appeared on Clarkson's talk show in January 2023, it was clear the duo still had strong chemistry, so might be somewhat of a bummer for those of us still shipping them to learn that he's actually been happily married since 2009.
Aubrey O'Day and Donald Trump Jr. hooked up in an unlikely spot
Singer Aubrey O'Day does not shy away from publicity, even if it's less than flattering, and so we were not surprised when she decided to tell the world about an affair she had with a married man. We were surprised, however, that the man in question was apparently Donald Trump Jr., oldest son of the former POTUS. It was first reported in 2018 that Trump had allegedly cheated on his then-wife, Vanessa, with O'Day, best known for being a member of the band Danity Kane and more recently for reality TV appearances. In fact, it was when O'Day was a cast member on "Celebrity Apprentice" in 2011 that she began communicating with Trump via social media, per an interview O'Day did with Michael Cohen for his "Mea Culpa" podcast.
O'Day spilled other juicy details in the interview, such as how the pair's first sexual encounter supposedly went down in a gay bar bathroom while she was hosting an evening there. "Everybody is in a g-string or less, and I was just, in my soul, like, 'There is no way the man that I've seen suited-up for the past couple months is going to show up here to see me in this lovely land that I get to be in,' and he did," she said.
We are just as shocked as O'Day was, seeing as how Trump has arguably been no friend of the LGBTQ+ community. For her part, O'Day called out this apparent hypocrisy before graphically describing the encounter later in the interview.
