The Real Reason Phoebe Waller-Bridge Quit Donald Glover's Mr. And Mrs. Smith
If you're a fan of quirky, critically beloved television starring equally quirky, critically beloved auteurs, you may have thought the Phoebe Waller-Bridge and Donald Glover collaboration on the series adaptation of "Mr. & Mrs. Smith" was too good to be true. Welp, we regret to inform you that if this was the case — you were right. It looks like Waller-Bridge has left the project, according to The Hollywood Reporter, and we are, in a word, devastated.
The series was to be an adaptation of the classic 2005 film which starred Brad Pitt and Angelina Jolie as rival assassins who had unknowingly married one another. The show, set to stream on Amazon in 2022, was to star Waller-Bridge and Glover as the titular killer spouses. But sadly, as much as we would have loved to see the energy of these two bounce off of one another in the new show, it looks like it wasn't a match made in heaven after all.
So why, Phoebe, why? Here's what know about her departure.
Phoebe Waller-Bridge reportedly cited 'creative differences'
According to The Hollywood Reporter, Phoebe Waller-Bridge decided to leave the "Mr. & Mrs. Smith" project due to creative differences with Donald Glover. In case you were worried that "creative differences" is just code for "we hate each other's guts," sources say that Waller-Bridge and Glover are still friends and that the decision to break up the band, so to speak, was an amicable one. We don't know if this is actually true or not, of course, but we do prefer to believe that two of our faves are still buds after all.
Amazon hasn't yet released an official statement about Waller-Bridge's decision to step away, and tragically, the actor and Emmy-winner herself is not on social media. As for Glover, the only thing he's said on his Twitter as recently as of this writing is, "I love being influential." But is there more to the story here? And what does this say about Glover's future on the "Mr. & Mrs. Smith" series?
Fans of Phoebe Waller-Bridge and Donald Glover are not happy
You can breathe slightly easier knowing that Amazon's "Mr. & Mrs. Smith" is still going forward, and Donald Glover is still very much attached to the series. Production is now just looking for a new Mrs. to Glover's Mr. The series itself was Glover's idea, and he is still listed as a co-creator, executive producer, and star, per The Hollywood Reporter. The outlet also notes that the show is still set to premiere sometime in 2022.
However, as might be expected, fans on social media had some opinions about Waller-Bridge's departure. One user praised the actor as an "uncompromising queen" and for sticking to her own creative guns. Another had a few requests. "Well now that phoebe waller-bridge stepped down from that mr & mrs movie i need her to either give me fleabag season 3 or get back to being head writer of killing eve," they wrote. A third fan attached a meme photo of a man taking off headphones in disgust.
As for us, we'll just be here with the popcorn ready, waiting for any more juicy deets to spill our way.
