The True Meaning Behind 'Summer Of Love' By Shawn Mendes & Tainy

It's been less than a year since Shawn Mendes released his fourth studio album, "Wonder," and now he's back with more new music. The Canadian singer released his single, "Summer of Love," on August 20 along with its official music video, which was filmed in Mallorca, Spain. The track, which was produced by artist Tainy, is an upbeat song about feeling nostalgic about our younger years and the people we spent our summers with.

"I hope this song makes people feel free, free from the weight of life, even if just for a moment. The inspiration was getting a few months off to have a real summer with the people I love," Mendes said in a statement to Rolling Stone. "My favorite part about creating it was getting the opportunity to work in the studio with Tainy. It was a special experience connecting with him since he's such an incredible artist and amazing producer."

Scroll ahead to find out the real meaning behind Mendes' "Summer of Love," including all the lyrics about his girlfriend, Camila Cabello.

'Summer of Love' was inspired by Camila Cabello

Shawn Mendes revealed "Summer of Love" was inspired by the quality time off he spent with Camila Cabello in Miami amid the pandemic. "Time was kind of stopped and it really just felt like we were like kids again, you know?" the singer-songwriter told SiriusXM's Ron Ross during an interview on "The Pulse" on August 24. "And we were able to just find ourselves and it was a beautiful kind of time. And that's what I wrote the song about."

"Camila and I were so lucky because we were able to just kind of be in a still moment, and it was the first time in the past six years that we've been just able to relax and not work at all," Mendes also explained on an Audacy Check In on August 20. "We were going on bike rides around Miami, and it just felt really beautiful. I had a lot of nostalgia at that time, and I think without that time we found it a lot harder to connect. It really brought us together."

Shawn Mendes references his relationship in the lyrics of 'Summer of Love'

Shawn Mendes' "Summer of Love" lyrics features tons of references to his girlfriend Camila Cabello and their two-year relationship. On the track, Mendes sings, per Genius, "Meditation and tequila / Calling you my señorita / Didn't know how much I need ya / Hate it when I have to leave ya / I've been taking mental pictures / For when I miss you in the winter / Staying up until the sunrise / Praying it won't be the last time."

The Canadian crooner also told Audacy that "meditation and tequila" were particularly important to him during the pandemic. "I think those two lines are such a good representation of what the last year has been for me. Daily meditation to stay calm, but just also tequila when it's necessary." He continued, "I think that reference to 'Señorita' was true, but also really fun to be able to reference that song." He's, of course, referring to his 2019 duet with Cabello. Mendes and Cabello have definitely been showing some PDA lately, and fans are certainly happy to see them blissfully in love, as the lyrics of "Summer of Love" suggest.
