Beyonce Wins Peabody Award For Lemonade
Grammy, Schmammy.
Beyonce Knowles on Thursday, April 20, 2017 was honored with a Peabody Award for her visual album, Lemonade.
"The audacity of its reach and fierceness of its vision challenges our cultural imagination," the Peabody Awards said in a statement obtained by The New York Times.
The award was honored almost exactly one year after the film version of Lemonade debuted on HBO; its accompanying album was released exclusively on Tidal after the film's premiere, on April 23, 2016, before hitting other stores, including iTunes, shortly thereafter.
The album and film were a critical success, and earned Beyonce, who is pregnant with twins, multiple Grammy awards and Emmy nominations. However, despite being heralded as one of the greatest albums of the current generation, Lemonade still lost the Grammy for Album of the Year in February, to Adele's 25.
Lemonade was among seven television shows honored by the Peabody Awards. Other winners included Louis C.K.'s Better Things and Horace and Pete; the FX series Atlanta; and the popular HBO comedy Veep.
