Soulja Boy And Kanye West's Feud Explained
For a while, Kanye West seemed to be in the headlines for everything but his music. From his rocky relationship with former president Donald Trump to his eventual run for president, the rapper was trending for his provocative political opinions for most of 2020, only to then be in the news because of his highly covered divorce from his wife Kim Kardashian.
Meanwhile, West's fans were patiently awaiting the release of his next project, which was originally expected to drop in July 2020. He finally released "Donda," his tenth album, in August. Unsurprisingly, the launch of his highly anticipated album has been a trending topic. From his various listening parties — one of which Kardashian attended and ironically wore a wedding dress to, according to Buzzfeed — to West's alleged comments about making things work with his estranged wife, the rollout of "Donda" has been quite the ride.
West even brought out controversial figures, Marilyn Manson and DaBaby on stage with him at one of his recent events, which didn't sit right with many fans. As the Daily Beast noted, Manson has been accused of rape and DaBaby made homophobic comments, making many question West's decision to include them. And while West collaborated with a ton of other less controversial artists for the album, one rapper West worked with isn't too happy with the final version of "Donda."
Was 'Donda' an intentional snub?
Not long after "Donda" was released, rapper Soulja Boy made it very clear he wasn't happy with Kanye West's album. Specifically, the "Pretty Boy Swag" artist was furious that West cut his verse from a song on the album. "Idk how to feel, Kanye sent me that song 'remote control' and I don't hear my verse on it..." Soulja Boy tweeted on August 29 in a response to a fan asking the rapper what he thought about West's album.
He went on to include supposed screenshots of a text conversation between him and West that shows West telling the rapper he wants to work with him. "You're a genius Wanna work with you on the new GAP campaign And my new album," West said. According to Hype Beast, Soulja Boy's verse on "Remote Control" was swapped with Rapper Young Thug.
Soulja Boy took it even further on Twitter as he continued to go after West over the snub, and ended up getting quite personal.
Did Soulja Boy take it too far?
On August 31, Soulja Boy, continuing to troll Kanye West, tweeted a throwback picture of himself with Kim Kardashian and said, "I was the first rapper with @kimkardashian not u @kanywest." He included both a winking and laughing emoji. To some, Soulja Boy's latest jab may be taking the feud a bit too far, especially considering West and Kardashian's marriage issues.
Though Kanye hasn't directly responded to any of Soulja Boy's claims, he did post a message onto his Instagram account on August 29 when "Donda" first dropped, blaming his label for releasing the wrong version of the album. "universal put my album out without my approval and they blocked jail 2 from being released," West said.
But in an interview with TMZ on August 30, Soulja Boy said he thinks West used his label as a scapegoat. "You wait till I express myself on social media and then you made an excuse?" Soulja Boy said. "You know for a fact Kanye not finna let nobody release his album without his permission," he continued. The rapper also explained that he wanted to share the situation with his fans, which is why he took to Twitter, but said he would still consider working with Kanye in the future. And who knows, maybe West is saving Soulja Boy's track to use on a deluxe version of "Donda."
