The Real Reason Lala Kent Stopped Drinking Alcohol
Lala Kent has been upfront about her real-life struggles with alcohol. The "Vanderpump Rules" star has been sober for more than two years, but it was a long road before she came to terms with the fact that she was an alcoholic.
Viewers of the Bravo reality show saw some of the star's alcohol-fueled antics. Per Us Weekly, Lala recalled such incidents in her tell-all book, "Give Them Lala." She once body-shamed her co-star Katie Maloney, got into some nasty fights with Raquel Leviss and former SUR hostess Billie Lee, and once displayed such intense drunken behavior on "Watch What happens Live" that Andy Cohen publicly slammed her.
a now-sober Lala also recalled some of the awful things she did to her fiance, filmmaker Randall Emmett, while drunk. In her book, Kent revealed that the more she drank, the more she took things out on her man. "I'm talking relationship-ending, call-the-cops kind of drama," she wrote, per Us Weekly, before detailing incidents that included her soaking Emmett's luggage in a bathtub, tossing his wallet off a balcony and sticking his toothbrush up her... well, let's just leave that one alone.
Fortunately, Lala Kent finally came to terms with her alcoholism in 2018. This is how she did it.
How Lala Kent addressed her alcoholism
Lala Kent told TooFab that she made the decision to "break up with alcohol" after realizing she was self-medicating with vodka sodas from morning until night. Much of her pain came following the death of her father in 2018. She told People that she turned to alcohol to numb the pain after her dad's death, and in her memoir, Lala also admitted that she drank to calm her nerves before filming "Vanderpump Rules."
But it was a vacation with her fiance and his young daughters that spawned her decision to get help. In her book, Lala revealed that Randall Emmett wrote her a letter to tell her he planned to call off their engagement after she was drunk for days during their family trip to Disney World, per Us Weekly. But on that same day, Lala admitted to Emmett that she was an alcoholic and vowed to get help. While their wedding was postponed due to COVID-19, the couple ultimately stayed together and welcomed a baby daughter, Ocean Kent Emmett, in March 2021.
In her book, Lala wrote that she "hit a breaking point" where she had to "identify as an alcoholic" or she would lose everything. Once she admitted that she was "powerless over alcohol"' she began "reading the Big Book, going to meetings, and working very hard to never go back to that drunken version" of herself. "Now, I wake up in the morning, and I don't regret anything I said or did," she told TooFab.
