Stars Who Should Never Get Married Again
Marriage isn't for everyone: There's a huge commitment, there's a lot of paperwork, and people change. Divorce happens. It's not a big deal, and as the old saying goes, "If at first you don't succeed, try and try again." Except, well, these stars have tried again...and again...and again, and they can't seem to keep a marriage together, so maybe it's time to give it a rest. Because as the other old saying goes, "The definition of insanity is doing the same thing over and over again and expecting different results."
Halle Berry
Halle Berry is one of the most beautiful people to ever grace the planet, but for some reason, she just can't seem to stay married. Her marriage to pro baseball player David Justice from 1992 to 1997 went down in flames, with Berry obtaining a restraining order against him and the pair later denying he abused her. Her second marriage, to singer Eric Benet, lasted from 2001 to 2003, when it was revealed he cheated on her and checked himself into rehab for sex addiction. Her third, to actor Olivier Martinez, was a volatile one, in which he got into a physical brawl with her ex and baby daddy Gabriel Aubry on Thanksgiving morning in 2012.
At the USC City Summit and Gala in February 2017, the Oscar winner, now 50, confessed to the crowd (via Entertainment Tonight), "I have learned to deal with three failed marriages, which has not been easy, especially when there's children involved. [As] women, we go into marriage thinking it's going to last forever and that this is our prince on a shiny horse. That's what fairy tales taught me as a kid...and I'm kind of anti–fairy tales today...when it falls apart it feels like a huge failure and a huge disappointment. I've often felt guilty and responsible. I've suffered a lot of pain and anguish." She continued, "In every one of those situations, as hard—and sometimes embarrassing—as it was, I learned so much about myself. All of those relationships were necessary for me. We all come here with lessons that we have to learn, and those relationships provided me with lessons that got me to where I am right now. For that, I'm grateful. But it has been hard. It's been a difficult part of my life."
Charlie Sheen
Charlie Sheen has three divorces, two broken engagements, a handful of "goddesses," and an innumerable number of scandals under his belt, leading us to believe that maybe he's not exactly husband material.
In 1990, Sheen was briefly engaged to Kelly Preston...until he accidentally shot her in the arm (seriously). Next came a five-year romance with porn star Ginger Lynn Allen, which ended because of his substance abuse-fueled rages. In 1992, he dated supermodel Stephanie Seymour, even though she was still dating Axl Rose at the time.
He married model Donna Peele in 1995, but they split after less than six months of marriage, with Sheen kindly explaining, "You buy a bad car, it breaks down." He was accused of assaulting ex-girlfriend Brittany Ashland in 1996, though he alleged that he was defending himself after she attacked him with a fork.
He married second wife Denise Richards in 2002. They split briefly in 2005 but reconciled...then split for good in 2006. The pair share daughters Sam and Lola from their marriage, and their relationship since has varied from friendly to feuding and back numerous times, and their divorce and custody battle got very ugly, though they seem to get along as of the time of this writing.
From 2008 to 2011, Sheen was married to wife No. 3, Brooke Mueller, with whom he shares twin sons Bob and Max. On Christmas 2009, Sheen was arrested for a domestic violence incident involving Mueller, after which he went to rehab. Mueller eventually filed for divorce, and the pair's custody battle was a brutal one, with their sons briefly living with Richards while they each struggled with substance abuse.
In 2011, Sheen was in a polyamorous relationship with two porn star "goddesses," Natalie Kenly and Bree Olson. By 2014, he was engaged to porn star Brett Rossi, but they called it quits before walking down the aisle. Here's hoping other women, and Sheen himself, realize that they may not exactly be "winning" if they walk down the aisle with the Anger Management star.
Angelina Jolie
Angelina Jolie divorced her first husband, Jonny Lee Miller, after three years in 1999. She moved on to Billy Bob Thornton a year later—while he was still dating actress Laura Dern—and divorced him three years later in 2003. She then fell in love with Brad Pitt, who was still married to Jennifer Aniston, on the set of Mr. And Mrs. Smith in 2004—although they deny getting together before Brad's divorce from Jennifer. They were together for 11 years before tying the knot in 2014... and two years after marrying him, Jolie filed for divorce in September 2016 in a split that's proven to be pretty tough on everyone involved. Maybe her relationships are simply at their best when they just have blood oaths instead of legally binding contracts.
Jennifer Lopez
Being single is to Jennifer Lopez what snakes are to Indiana Jones, and she's admitted as much. Until she fixes that issue, she's going to have a tough time staying married or in a healthy relationship. Her marriage to waiter Ojani Noa lasted from 1996 to 1997, and to this day he still messes with her head and tries to capitalize on her fame. After boyfriend Diddy allegedly cheated on her several times, they split and she quickly married backup dancer Cris Judd in 2001... only to take up with Ben Affleck in July 2002. After she and Affleck called off their engagement, she rebounded and married Marc Anthony, despite later saying she knew early on that it was the wrong decision.
"When my marriage ended, it was not easy to find forgiveness. It wasn't the dream that I had hoped for, and it would have been easier to fan the flames of resentment, disappointment and anger. But Marc is the father of my children, and that's never going away. So I have to work to make things right. And that is, by far, the hardest work I do," she told W Magazine in May 2016. "I hung in there for seven years. I knew very quickly that it wasn't the right thing." Still, she may have learned along the way: She admitted that while she's been married three times, she's been proposed to five times, so she does know how to say no.
Marc Anthony
Marc Anthony's marital track record is almost as awful as his ex J. Lo's. He was married to former Miss Universe Dayanara Torres from 2000 to 2004, with whom he shares sons Ryan and Cristian... then he promptly married Jennifer Lopez, which Torres told People put her "through Hell." After seven years and one set of twins, Max and Emme, together, in 2011, Lopez called it quits on the marriage. Anthony moved on to model Shannon De Lima, with whom he tied the knot in 2014 (and who is 20 years younger than he is). However, there were problems, and the pair split in November 2016, with a source telling People, "Marc likes to have a woman at home but he also likes to live like a bachelor. This doesn't work for very long." Before their divorce was even finalized, Anthony began dating a 21-year-old model named Mariana Downing. Here's hoping he doesn't bother putting a ring on it.
Pamela Anderson
Pamela Anderson doesn't just seem to choose bad partners, she also recycles them. She had a tumultuous and allegedly abusive marriage to Tommy Lee, with whom she shares sons Brandon and Dylan (as well as a very famous sex tape), from 1995 to 1998—and they married just 96 hours after they met.
Her issues with Lee extended into her second marriage, this time to Kid Rock, from August 2006 to February 2007. Lee and Kid Rock got into a shoving match over Anderson at the MTV Video Music Awards in September 2007, despite neither of the men being involved with her at the time, and Kid Rock later accused Anderson of lying about a miscarriage.
Just months after her split from Kid Rock, Anderson married Rick Salomon, a professional gambler best known for being the co-star in Paris Hilton's sex tape, in October 2007. They annulled the marriage within two months, then married again in January 2014. Anderson filed for divorce again in July 2014, but the couple reconciled quickly. By March 2015, they were done for good, and the split was ugly: In court documents obtained by TMZ, Salomon accused Anderson of being a "serial baby killer" through abortion, while Anderson claimed that Salomon tried to smother her when they were being intimate. She later told W Magazine that her marriage "aged her 20 years."
Kim Kardashian
Kim Kardashian's first marriage to Damon Thomas was a nightmare. The soon-to-be reality star was just 19 to his 29 when she eloped with the music producer in 2000, and they were over by 2004 with good reason:The Daily Mail reports that Kardashian accused Thomas of domestic violence and said he pushed her to get plastic surgery to be "perfect." Thomas denied all of her allegations in an interview with In Touch Weekly and accused her of cheating on him with Jennifer Lopez's second husband, Cris Judd.
Kardashian's second marriage to NBA star Kris Humphries lasted 72 days, and their divorce proceedings outlasted their entire relationship.
Now, Kardashian is still attached to third husband Kanye West, but reports suggest they may be on the rocks following his "psychotic emergency" in November 2016 and her armed robbery in Paris that October. The pair lived apart temporarily while he recovered. While they seem to be doing better these days, if they do split someday, K.K. may want to just take some time to be single... or avoid legally binding contracts with her next paramours.
Drew Barrymore
Drew Barrymore is in the midst of her third failed marriage, this time to Will Kopelman. The pair tied the knot in 2012 and split nearly four years later in April 2016. She was previously married to comedian Tom Green from 2001 to 2002 and bar owner Jeremy Thomas from 1994 to 1995. The 42-year-old actress does seem to notice the pattern in her romances (thanks to some help from pal Nancy Juvonen), so there's some hope for her yet.
"I'd go to her about relationship advice and I'd be like, 'I just don't understand why this keeps happening... I mean, this is exactly what happened last time. It's just like every single time,'" Barrymore told Good Housekeeping. "She's like, 'I did notice that there's a common denominator problem in all of your relationships and I'd like to identify it right now.' And I'm like, 'What!? I've been waiting! Show me the light!' She's like, 'It's you.'"
Tom Cruise
Insiders claim the common denominator in Tom Cruise's three failed marriages may be his devotion to the Church of Scientology. Going Clear author Lawrence Wright told Radar Online that the Church brought about the demise of Cruise's first marriage to actress Mimi Rogers in 1987, whose father left the religion.
The Sydney Morning Herald reports that Scientology execs also led to the demise of Cruise's marriage to second wife, Nicole Kidman, who is Catholic and whose father is a psychologist—two big no-nos in the religion. The Herald speculates that Scientology officials tapped Kidman's phone in an effort to throw a wrench into the relationship, and by 2001, they succeeded.
When Katie Holmes filed for divorce from Cruise in 2012 and filed for sole custody of daughter Suri, she reportedly used a disposable cell phone to call three different law firms in three different states in an effort to prepare her case in secret.
In October 2016, Us Weekly reported that Cruise was "getting serious" with a new, unnamed girlfriend. Here's hoping she's willing to convert.
Jodie Sweetin
Jodie Sweetin could have a full house with just her ex-husbands. The Fuller House star has been married three times: First, to Shaun Holguin from 2002 to 2006, then to Cody Herpin from 2007 to 2010, then she split from Morty Coyle, with whom she shares daughter Beatrix, and was married to from 2012 to June 2013. Sweetin and Coyle are still at odds over child support payments and had to have mandatory drug testing stipulated in their divorce settlement, so maybe her latest fiance, Justin Hodak, wants to really mull this over before risking becoming ex-husband No. 4.
Liza Minnelli
Liza Minnelli has four ex-husbands to her name, and, well, she doesn't quite know how to pick 'em. She found her first husband, Peter Allen, in bed with another man on their wedding night in 1967, but they didn't divorce for almost seven years in 1974. She then married Jack Haley less than a year later, staying with him from 1974 to 1979, during which she was rumored to have had several affairs with other men. Her longest marriage started immediately after her split from Haley, when she tied the knot with sculptor Mark Gero in 1979 and they divorced in 1992, but remain friendly.
Minnelli's split from her fourth husband, David Gest, was the ugliest. They were only married 16 months, but apparently a lot went down during that time: She accused him of trying to poison her, he said she had herpes and never told him, he accused her of domestic violence, she claimed he was after her money and Warhol collection. Seeing as she's zero for four, Minnelli should think twice before ever signing a marriage license again.
Larry King
Larry King has been married eight times (twice to one lucky lady), and his situation doesn't seem to have improved over time: Page Six reports that the legendary newsman is mulling over divorcing his seventh wife, Shawn, after rumors emerged that she'd been having an affair behind his back for more than a year.
His pre-Shawn history is rich: He married his high school sweetheart, Freda Miller, in 1952, but they annulled the union after a year because their parents didn't approve. He married Annette Kaye in 1961, but they divorced after less than a year. He married former Playboy Playmate Alene Akins in 1961, divorced her in 1963, and remarried her in 1968...then divorced her again in 1971. In between, he married Mickey Sutphin in 1963, then divorced her in 1967. He had a five year stretch with no ring, then married Sharon Lepore in 1976 and divorced her 1983—a respectable run for him. He wed Julie Alexander in 1989, separated from her in 1990, and divorced her in 1992. He wed Shawn (nee Southwick) in 1997, and they've been together more than 19 years...for now.
Lisa Marie Presley
In 1988, when Elvis spawn Lisa Marie Presley was 20, she married unknown Scientologist musician Danny Keough, divorcing after six years and two children together. In 1994, she had a very public marriage to Michael Jackson, which dissolved in 1996, shortly after he was acquitted of child molestation. In 2002, she married Elvis super-fan Nicolas Cage, but they split just three months later, calling it a "crazy idea."
Her life seemed to have calmed down by 2006, when she wed musician Michael Lockwood... but that came crashing down after a decade. In June 2016, Presley filed for divorce from Lockwood, with whom she shares two children, citing irreconcilable differences. She accused him of taking advantage of her financially, as well as of child abuse—and People reports that Lockwood is being investigated for possessing child pornography. Lockwood denies all the claims.
