Strange Things About Kristin Cavallari's Marriage

Laguna Beach reality star Kristin Cavallari is no stranger to living her life like an open book, so it's no surprise that she's often spoken out about her relationship with husband and former Chicago Bears quarterback Jay Cutler since their wedding in 2013. Makes sense considering that, while all relationships have their flaws, there's just nowhere to hide your dirty laundry when you're in the spotlight. As could be expected, the couple's marriage hasn't been all California sunsets. Here are some strange facts you might know about Kristin Cavallari and Jay Cutler.

They attend couple's therapy

Sometimes couples need a third party to help them navigate the ups and downs of their relationship. It's just not everyday that we encounter a celeb couple who's so willing to admit it needs help. In a 2015 interview with American Baby (via E! News), cover star Cavallari opened up about how therapy has changed her life and her relationship: "I'm not ashamed to say that Jay and I consistently go to therapy, because it's been extremely beneficial for our relationship."

In her 2016 book Balancing in Heels, she reveals just how instrumental her therapist was in improving her relationship with her husband. ”I credit [our therapist] for saving our relationship," Cavallari shared (via Us Weekly). "She opened up our eyes to the other person's perspective and gave us great tools for communication." It's great that Cavallari and Cutler understand that asking a therapist for help is a healthy way to work on their marriage, but we can't help but wonder what these two talk about during their sessions.

Their relationship got off to a rocky start

First impressions count. Unfortunately, Cavallari's initial opinion of Cutler was less than ideal. In a video interview with Us Weekly, she recalled looking Cutler up online before they were scheduled to meet — an encounter designed to "make [her] cousin's life" because her cuz was a huge Bears fan. Cavallari though? Not so much.

"I had Googled pictures of him, and I was like, 'Eh, you know, whatever.'" Yikes! Apparently, Cavallari changed her mind about the football player when she met him in real life. "He walked in, and I was like, 'Whoa, he's so much cuter in person,'" she said. "He's almost six-four, big, manly."

What did Cutler initially think of Cavallari? After all, she was pretty well known in the early 2000s as the "b*****" friend on Laguna Beach. He was reportedly very interested in her and even had his publicist reach out to Cavallari while she was still working on The Hills — but she turned him down. According to an interview with A Drink With, she wasn't digging the idea of having a boyfriend in Chicago.

She previously called off their engagement

If we did have to guess what Cavallari and her man discuss with their therapist, we imagine they've probably brought up their previous broken engagement. While the two may be married with three children now, Cavallari experienced second thoughts and broke up with Cutler in July 2011. In her book, Balancing in Heels, she reflects on that trying time (via Us Weekly): "At that moment, something wasn't right," she said "...A few things needed to change, and I knew the only way Jay would see how serious I was, was if I ended the relationship." They reportedly returned their wedding gifts to all their family members, friends, and well-wishers.

While Cavallari also implies that the pair sought therapy following the temporary breakup, we'd wager it's still a painful topic that must spring up now and then. After all, who wouldn't be affected after splitting and on-again-off-again wedding?

His proposal was anything but romantic

Most people dream about getting engaged by having the love of their life get down on one knee and profess their undying love and devotion. Sometimes there's a romantic venue or a grand gesture, such as releasing a dozen doves into the air to make the night special. More often than not, particularly for celebrities, there's at least a ring. But that's not how Cutler's proposal to Cavallari played out.

She told E! News host Giuliana Rancic that Cutler asked her to marry him through a text message. "It was so silly. I was in the airport, leaving Chicago. We had just spent however many days together and we were texting and somehow it came up, like, 'Oh, shall we get married?'" she said. "We're like, 'Yeah, OK.' And then he sent my ring in the mail." How, um, sweet?

He's uncomfortable in the spotlight

Life as a public figure must be tough. For Kristin Cavallari and Jay Cutler, that's doubly true. Cavallari may have experience dealing with haters from her time on Laguna Beach and The Hills, but Cutler, who first entered the NFL in 2006, isn't as thick-skinned as you might expect. "The pop culture world was all new for Jay," Cavallari explained in a Twitter Q&A hosted by Revlon and Cosmopolitan (via Us Weekly). "So paparazzi bothered him (still does) and it took a lot of adjusting ... Which can put strain on a relationship unless u have a really solid foundation."

While Cutler may like his privacy, Cavallari never seemed afraid of public attention. However, things may have changed since she's last graced our screens as a reality TV star. She told People that she was reluctant to share her family's private life with the world. "I care too much about my family to air our dirty laundry and to put everything out there and have everybody constantly judging us," she said.

But come April 2018, Cavallari apparently had an entirely different opinion on the whole situation. That's when E! announced its reality TV series about her life with Cutler. The show premiered in July 2018.

She has an odd way of defending her man

When someone insults your significant other, you come to their defense, right? Well, Cavallari doesn't seem to fully grasp the concept of standing by your guy. In January 2017, she shared a photo to Instagram of her and Cutler vacationing in Mexico. In the caption, she wrote, "I had the best birthday of my life and it was all thanks to this guy." Unfortunately, followers were quick to mock Cutler's appearance. According to CNN, some of Cavallari's "fans" wrote comments such as, "Jay been eatin them pancakes!" Poor Cutler!

How did Cavallari shut down the haters? She posted another photo of her husband alongside celebrity hairstylist Scotty Cunha — both posing with unbuttoned shirts. "Husband and gusband," she captioned that one. "And since Jay looked like a 300lb lesbian in my last post, I felt I should do him justice by posting him looking hot AF in this one." It's obvious she's trying to make light of the situation, but couldn't the reality star have simply defended her man instead of posting another picture of him to apparently prove he can photograph better? While we doubt Cavallari meant any disrespect to Cutler (or to lesbians,) her well-curated Instagram feed seems to indicate that looks do matter to this Mrs.

Football fans bully her

It's not only Cutler who receives hate online. Cavallari has been a target since her teen years as Queen Bee on Laguna Beach. "I deal with bullying on a daily basis from social media," she said (via the Daily Mail). "Literally, people always say stuff to me on Instagram."

But Cavallari isn't shaded simply for her own actions or appearance. She also received heat every time the Chicago Bears lost a game! Apparently, some football fans are not a fan of Cutler, who used to play quarterback for the Bears. For example, after the Bears won a game against the Minnesota Vikings, Cavallari sorta kinda joked with her Twitter followers: "Can everyone shut up now?" No, they couldn't. After the Bears' next loss, folks had a lot to say. One commenter told her to "Please move out of the city." Ouch. Harsh.

Fear not, Cavallari isn't going to let cyber bullies get her down. She told People exactly what she thinks of online haters. "You just have to remember that people who are going to comment [stuff like that], they're obviously coming from an insecure place." She added, "When you're happy with your life and everything's cool, you're not going to go and try to put someone else down. So just remember: It's not about you, it's about them, and all you have to do is block them and delete the comments." Smart thinking, Cavallari. Just brush that dirt off your shoulder.

A vasectomy is on the table

Kristin Cavallari and Jay Cutler have had three beautiful children. While fans of the Chicago Bears and Laguna Beach alike would surely love to see more blonde babies running around the couple's household, she's apparently not about to let that happen. She opened up on Maria Menounos's SiriusXM show (via People) about her future family plans.

"My philosophy is: we have to push the babies out," she told Menounos. "[Women] are the ones that have to go through everything, so [men] can do one little thing and get snipped." That sounds logical to us. Plus, with two young sons, Camden Jack and Jaxon Wyatt, and a daughter, Saylor James, the Cavallari-Cutler clan seems perfect as is. And in case you were still wondering if more bundles of joy could be in their future, Cavallari later doubled down on her statements, telling Extra in July 2018, "We're done — shop is closed!"

Guess that's that.

Their parenting skills have come under scrutiny

The internet is a haven for haters; people constantly feel the need to chime in with their two cents. While there are often a lot of heavily opinionated comments, sometimes the words of followers and fans come from a place of genuine concern. When Cavallari shared a photo of her husband and two sons on the beach during their July 4th vacation in 2016, people were quick to point out her kids' slim physiques. Comments included, "I know you cook healthy but to see the bones just doesn't seem normal, sorry!" and "I understand you live a very strict dietary lifestyle but these children are very obviously nutritionally deficient."

It is true that Cavallari follows a strict diet and exercise regimen, and she's been open about being a "psycho" when it comes to the nutrition of her whole family. According to Parents, she writes about making her children's baby formula at home from goat's milk in her book, Balancing in Heels. However, she rejected the suggestion that she's not feeding her children adequately, sarcastically quipping (via Us Weekly), "Yep, I starve my children."

Cavallari's really open about their sex life

Making time for romance in your relationship is key to a successful life together, but sometimes, you just have to get down to business. Cavallari understands that sex with her husband is vital to their relationship, but time and location don't always allow for those much-needed intimate moments. Luckily, that's where sexting comes into play.

According to Us Weekly, Cavallari writes in her book, Balancing in Heels, "I've been known to sext from time to time. Gotta do whatcha gotta do!" She reiterated those statements in an interview with Steve Harvey, describing how she tries to keep the magic alive in her relationship, even when she has her hands full doing other activities: "This is a little secret and now Jay's gonna know, but half the time, I'm doing other stuff. I'm doing my nails, I'm folding laundry, and then I'll kind of do a little text."

It's not always easy to maintain a spark in a relationship, so kudos to Kristin Cavallari and Jay Cutler for doing what they can to keep their love lives kicking.
