Regina King's Oscar Dress Cost A Small Fortune, Fashion Expert Reveals
Regina King looked absolutely stunning at the 93rd Academy Awards, where she donned a custom-made Louis Vuitton gown. The icy blue frock featured 62,000 sequins and 4,000 crystals and took 140 hours to make. The gown also featured sleeves reminiscent of butterfly wings with silver sequins and two different tones of silver crystals embroidered onto the garment. She topped the look off with sandals — also from Louis Vuitton — along with diamond earrings, a bracelet, and rings from Forevermark jewelry, Entertainment Tonight reported.
King is not nominated this year, but she did have the honor of opening the broadcast and handing out the first award for Best Original Screenplay to Emerald Fennell for "Promising Young Woman." King's directorial debut, "One Night In Miami," is also nominated for three awards: Leslie Odom Jr. is nominated for Best Supporting Actor and the film itself is also up for Best Adapted Screenplay and Best Original Song, per ET.
However, King is also an Oscar winner herself. She won the 2019 award for Best Supporting Actress for her performance in "If Beale Street Could Talk," per IMDB. Still, King's ornate gown absolutely slayed the red carpet, making her a winner in her own right. But with all those sequins and crystals hand-embroidered onto the fabric, well, it must have cost a fortune, right? Nicki Swift spoke with a fashion expert to get the scoop on exactly how pricey King's dress might have been.
A fashion expert weighs in on the estimated cost of Regina King's Oscar gown
Speaking with Nicki Swift, fashion expert and TV personality Cindy Conroy shared her estimate of the cost of Regina King's Oscar gown. She said, "With so many ornate touches and glittering like the Tinkerbelle of my dreams, Regina King's custom Louis Vuitton Oscars dress is sure to have a hefty price tag."
Conroy dishes on red carpet fashion for a number of nationally syndicated shows. She also appears in a number of magazines with her fashion commentary and style tips including, Cosmopolitan, Bustle, InStyle, and WWD, according to her website. She went on to reveal that it took 140 hours to make the gown and detail the number of sequins and crystals on the dress. She continued, "That's oodles of manpower. I would estimate the cost at north of $5,000 and quite probably closer to $10,000."
Fun fact: Jennifer Lawrence is believed to have worn the most expensive Oscar gown of all time at the 2013 award ceremony. The blush-colored gown with the voluminous skirt was by Raf Simons for Christian Dior Haute Couture and rumored to cost $4 million, Marie Claire reports.
