John Stamos' Head-Turning Transformation From 24 To 57
John Stamos is one of Hollywood's hottest heartthrobs, and he's enjoyed a great career in the industry. According to his IMDb page, the actor got his start in the TV series Dreams in 1984, playing the role of Gino Minnelli. From there, his career blossomed. He's appeared in several television shows and he boasts a huge fanbase. While he's a talented actor, Stamos is also one of the best-looking men in Tinseltown, and he even earned a spot on People's Sexiest Man Alive issue in 2007. Hubba hubba!
In addition, Stamos tours with The Beach Boys from time to time, playing drums. The star told Ravinia Backstage Blog that he first fell in love with the music group when he was 13 years old and the rest is history. "The first song I sang was 'Barbara Ann,'" Stamos dished. "I eventually worked my way to the drums. One of the first big shows I did with them was a Fourth of July concert at the Washington Monument. Now they can't get rid of me." Seriously, is there anything that this man cannot do?
One thing's for sure — he's like a fine wine and just getting better with age. Keep scrolling to take a look at Stamos' head-turning transformation from 24 (as seen above) to 57.
John Stamos landed the role of his lifetime with 'Full House'
John Stamos landed the role of his lifetime in the late '80s when he scored the part of Jesse Katsopolis, a.k.a. "Uncle Jesse," in Full House. He starred alongside Dave Coulier, Bob Saget, Candace Cameron Bure, Jodie Sweetin, the Olsen twins, and Lori Loughlin — talk about a star-studded cast (many got their big break on the show as well).
According to IMDb, the show enjoyed several successful seasons before coming to an end in 1995 (and we're still crying about it, TBH). Stamos appeared in all 193 episodes. Of course, his phrase "have mercy" became somewhat of a trademark, and when you hear his name, that will always come to mind. The actor loved his time on the show, and in 2017, he shared his thoughts on what it was like to be such a huge part of one of the most well-known television series.
"Back then, it wasn't [acclaimed]," Stamos told WTOP. "It wasn't No. 1 all the time, but Top 5, Top 10. But we were never on the cover of magazines, we never got nominated for awards, we weren't hip, we weren't cool. There wasn't social media, so we didn't know how important it was. You couldn't just post a picture and see how many people liked it; you had to go to the mall to see if you were popular! So it's nice to sit back and go, 'Oh, this did mean something.'" Excuse us while we go watch all over again.
'ER' fans were paging Dr. Stamos in 2005
We have to admit that John Stamos makes one of the hottest doctors to ever live. On his IMDb page, it lists that Stamos played the role of Dr. Tony Gates from 2005-2009 on ER, appearing in 65 episodes of the show. At the time, he starred with other big names like Maura Tierney, Linda Cardellini, Angela Bassett, and Mekhi Phifer (via CinemaBlend).
In an interview with Pop Entertainment in 2006, the actor talked about the role and how it took more and more skill and memorization as his character got more popular. "I was learning 30 pages a day of dialogue or something," Stamos revealed. "You'd have to go through every emotion in one hour; sad, mad, crying, up and down, all over."
Stamos was also asked about his transition from Full House to ER and comedy to drama. Surprisingly, he shared that comedies are a little harder to act in. "Well, somebody in a movie said that dying is easy, comedy is hard. Comedy is really hard. It was hard maybe coming off of Jake in Progress, which I did last year [and going straight to ER]. The Tony Gates character has a sense of humor which I really like," he said. "I think one of my jobs on ER is to add a little levity to the show. But, they are both hard and they're both challenging." We think he's excellent in both comedies and dramas.
John Stamos appeared on 'Glee' in 2010 after some drama
What do you get when you mix John Stamos with Glee? Pure magic! According to his IMDb page, Stamos appeared in four episodes of Glee from 2010-2011. The hunk played the role of Dr. Carl Howell, but instead of an emergency room doctor, he was a dentist (you can look at our teeth anytime you want, Mr. Stamos). The actor chatted with New York Magazine about his role on the popular primetime series and how writers dissed him before he landed a guest role. "They say it takes more certainty than talent to be a star. I mean, look at John Stamos," Emma Pillsbury told teacher Will Schuester in the first episode.
The actor ended up calling the head of Fox and expressed his displeasure. "What did I ever do to you?" he asked at the time. "Are you guys crazy? Say anything you want about me, but don't say I have no talent!'" Brad Falchuk, one of Glee's head writers, said that he was wrong about Stamos when he met him on set, and he was surprised that Stamos lacked confidence. "It's surprising, when you talk to him," Falchuk shared. "He's vulnerable without being neurotic. He's very endearing." We have to admire Stamos for not being cocky.
John Stamos welcomed his first child in 2018
Let's pump the brakes on his professional life for a second, because John Stamos has an impressive personal life as well. At 54 years old, Stamos became a first-time dad. On April 15, 2018, the actor took to Instagram to share a sweet photo of himself and his son, Billy, laying on his chest. The actor included a sweet caption, in addition to the hashtags "Not Just An Uncle Anymore" and "Overjoyed." Just when we thought he couldn't be any hotter... he went and did that to us.
Stamos, who is undoubtedly one of the sexiest dads on planet earth, announced that he and (his girlfriend at the time) Caitlin McHugh were expecting in December 2017. Before welcoming his son, Stamos chatted with People about the greatest role in his life and how excited he was for the journey. The actor shared that he "always wanted to be a dad," but he wasn't sure it was in the plan. "People would say, 'You should have a child. I was like, 'That ship has sailed.'"
Luckily, he was wrong. "I'll be a fun dad. I've been practicing for a long time," he dished. "I've done every schtick you can do with a baby on TV... all the bits and jokes and diaper gags. I'll probably just do all that stuff." Stamos shares plenty of photos and videos of him and his son on Instagram, and we're totally here for it.
John Stamos is diving into sports in 2021
John Stamos is following in Friday Night Lights' star Kyle Chandler's footsteps (another one of our personal favorites) and playing a coach on television. Instead of football, Stamos coaches a basketball team in David E. Kelley's Disney+ show Big Shots (via Hollywood Outbreak). The show, which premiered in April 2021, followers the actor coaching a girls basketball team at a private high school.
On an episode of Watch What Happens Live, Stamos told Andy Cohen that he was filming the Fuller House finale and Big Shots on the same day at one point, and the task was pretty challenging. "The day that I shot the opening shot to Big Shot — where I had to scream and yell, and it was the first time I was being a real coach to the college team — I was at Fuller House shooting a wedding," he shared. "I was crying and stuff and then I had to go... and scream at these basketball players, so that was that day." All in a day's work, right?
